RIM Push mail question...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just purchased a Cingular Pearl. I am am individual, and I signed up for Cingular's $29.99 individual BB data plan which includes push mail. I set this up very easily and it works well.

However on my Windows Mobile device using an exchange server, mail is often pushed to the device before I see it on my desktop. With the BB plan, mail often is 5-15 minutes late arriving to the phone after it hits the mailbox.

What is the problem? Or is this normal?

I personally do not think this is normal. I have a BB pearl with cingular that I have three different email accounts hooked up to. I get ALL of my email on my phone way before it hits my Mac. For that reason I almost never use my computer for email unless I need to write a novel but even that doesn't stop me sometimes. LOL.

I'm guessing you set your exchange address up via BIS and it's using the OWA interface to get your mail. In that case the delay you're seeing is normal. Rim's servers only poll the account every few minutes and then push it to your device.

Other accounts such as Gmail and yahoo are instant.

If you want truly instant push to your device you'll need to set up BES.

Or you can forward those accounts to your username@carrier.blackberry.net address and they will be nearly instant.

If you do that then you won't be able to reply from those addresses. You can only reply using the same address the email came from, which will be your blackberry address. Be very careful about this address getting out in the wild. If you get on some spam list then you're SOL. The address is difficult to change.
If it's important that your emails look like they're being replied from the same address they were sent to, then you need to leave it set up the way it is.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8800: BlackBerry8800/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

You can change the Reply To address for the carrier email address from the BIS website to reflect your email address, thus avoiding people ever getting the carrier email address.

When I was using BIS, I used to forward all my email through spamcop.net. They have a very inexpensive yearly plan where they'll filter your email. What makes it super useful is you can in return forward everything that goes into spamcop out to another email address. I used my BB email address for that forward. As a resulted I received VERY little spam and never exposed my BB address (which I agree you should always keep private).

It's normal since the email isn't pushed between your mail server(s) and BIS unless you're forwarding to your *.blackberry.net address or using gmail. Most accounts are polled at intervals of up to 15 minutes.

You can also move to BES for faster push email.

As TMO's BIS does not play well with MS Exchange 2007, I had my IT guy forward mail to my BB. It usually gets to my phone before it gets to my laptop.

Yes, you can change the reply to address on the BIS interface. Other than a fancy signature (i.e., embedded graphics, etc) the receiver probably won't know the difference (unless they know you're sitting at a bar in the airport or wherever.)
