6700 WiFi help...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am having trouble with PIE. It takes 35 seconds to locate any page while on wifi. (I don't use any data plan) I tried every setting possible. I called verizon. 'No help with wifi, sorry' is what I was told. I called verizon dsl, 'No help with wifi, sorry' is what I was told. I called Microsoft, 'No help with wifi, call Verizon' is what I was told.

I checked all computers on my network and all operate (as well as my 6700) DHCP. I have wireless laptops and 3 desktops which work perfectly. I went to several friends houses, connected to their wireless network and my 6700 works PERFECTLY there with absolutly NO delays to go from one page to another. I come home and there it is the 35 second delay. I reset my router/modem and started fresh with all the settings, no difference.

I did discover though if I enter the IP address rather than the domain name into the address bar, I have no delay even on my network. There MUST be some setting I am missing somewhere. Under the network settings there are 8 different network adapters. All are set to 'use server assigned IP address' Don't know if I should use specific IP address instead on one or more...
Or maybe just hard reset and pray that works. I have so much sturr installed I would rather try to resolve this without.

bump...
Somebody must know how to fix this....

I have an idea what the problem is, but I'm not sure why it's happening. You will be happy to know that it is more likely a problem with your router than with your 6700... don't know if that's good news or bad news.

What that tells me is that the 6700 is having problems picking up the DNS settings from your router. The point that proves this is:

Forgive me if I'm giving you information you already know, but here's how it works: every website on the Internet has an IP address. If you type it in, you are telling your 6700 (or computer) to go to that address. It's very straightforward. Now, if you type in a domain name (or "URL") your 6700 or computer has to connect to a DNS server which maps that URL to the appropriate IP address. The DNS info is either automatically picked up by the router from your ISP, or it was specified by you when you set up the router.

One of the purposes of the router is to provide that DNS information to the computers connected to it. So, in your network settings, you have the choices of specifying DNS info or letting the router do it. In most cases, in a typical home network you should just let the router assign everything.

So, the difference between the different scenarios: the reason you can connect quickly using just the IP address is because you are bypassing DNS completely. When you go to a friend's house, your 6700 picks up the DNS info from their router with no problem. At home, your 6700 SHOULD be getting it from your router... and it sounds like it is, but not correctly.

So, I think it may be your router. Are you having this problem with any other computers on your network? And, just out of curiosity, what kind of router is it? I have a cheapo Linksys WRT54G at home that I occasionally have this problem with when I use my laptop, and I solve it by turning the WiFi off and back on on the laptop. I wonder if it's q quirk of the Linksys. I don't use it enough for it to be really annoying to me, though...

Hey THANKS for helping!
The router is an Actiontec 80211 B/G supplied by Verizon. All the other computers work fine, but then again they are 3.X Ghz machines so to compair would not be fair I would think. They do not seem to have any kind of delay going from one url to another.

I do use wep security. I turned it off in the router, then removed the connection in the 6700. Then tried to creat new. It connected but the delay was still there. I remember that I didn't soft reset the ppc. But I don't think it would have made a difference. Should I try that again? Or I shouldn't bother because wep shouldn't cause that?

I called UTStar tech support and they were very helpfull at first. There was a guy Daryl that was helping me and told me to try a few things. and then to call him back. I did try what he said but nothing did anything, so I called him back 2 days later only to find out he no longer works there!!! The next guy told me they have no wifi tech support.... and I should just hard reset my phone. THAT will fix it he said. NOPE still the same!

I do have another old 'B' router I could try to hook up to see if it works any better. Then I could call Verizon and yell at them if it is the router.

I really don't think it's the phone. And I can't see how having WEP enabled would make a difference.

If you can try it with a different router, that would be a good test. Or another test... do any of your friends have a 6700 that they could try to test with your router? If they have the same issues, that would pretty much narrow it down to the router.

And I wouldn't expect any help from anyone at Verizon... this is a PDA/networking issue, not a phone issue, so it doesn't fit into their regular tech support, unless you get lucky enough to get a tech that has had the same issues. I use Alltel and have had a couple of tech support issues where I was fortunate enough to get a tech who had the 6700 and was enough of a "geek" to go beyond the Alltel-provided support and tell me what hacks he had done on his phone. Actually, he's the one who told me about HoFo.

Well tommorrow is the day of re-doing the whole networking system. I will swap routers, use a different essid and then delete all remenants of the old one in all computers. I will set it up first without any security.

I don't use the routers firewall but do use it on each computer. At my friends house he told me he DOES use the routers firewall and not windows... go figure.

I'll post my results! Thanks for the help, I have my fingers crossed already.

Nobody I know has a PPC or I would have asked for a test connect

For all of you that helped... THANKS!

I installed a new Westell wireless router, and had to talk to tech support for 30 mins to be able to get internet to connect, but after that all works perfect. Wep is enabled too. It's like I have fios on my PPC now! What a difference... No delays at all.

So I guess it was the router that had DNS issues after all.
Actiontec = junk

Again, Thanks....
