i'm sure i'm opening up a can of worms, but what's the current best 'toy' on the market.

I"m looking for a feature packed phone. I can go either with verizon or cingular. It doesn't need to be a retail channel phone either, the n95 is on my list even with the crazy price.

If you want to know the popular ones, look at my listing of currently available smartphones: http://mobilitynow.org/finder/

Nokia N95 is the newest animal on the Market and so far the most featured packed phone that no other cellphones can compete at the moment.

I have read that the N75 is not EDGE compatible, but it appears in these links that it is EDGE but not 3G. Is that correct?

The N75 has both EDGE and 3G compatible with Cingular.

The N95 supports both EDGE and european 3G. The N75 supports EDGE and US 3G and is available from Cingular.

the N95 runs Symbian however, your software choices are limited, you have lots of 3rd party support but nowhere NEAR WM5/6

true, but if you rock symbian you don't have to live with WM

i have an n75. it's really nice. a little on the big side, but if you don't mind carrying it, the size actually feels good - has a quality-like heft. huge screen, roomy buttons. it's like a volvo turbo -- not at all sexy, but safe and fun to drive. 3g is nice. it has crashed on me once already in the four days i've been using it, though.
