Razor V3 keyboard problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello,

I bought a v3 razor (cingular razor) from my co-worker for what seemed like a cheap price at the time ($30) because the keyboard is not working. She swears that it was never dropped in water and that the keyboard just stopped working one day. The odd thing is that the power button does work (it powers it on and it asks for a sim - screen seems to work fine and the power button powers it off). I inserted my sim from my current old cingular phone and verified that indeed only the power button works.

What I'd like to do is to fix it myself. I found manuals to help me open the razor:
http://www.hackthev3.com/downloadab...otorola_v3.html

Now I'm thinking of getting a keypad and the membrane underneath it and replacing both:
- keypad: http://www.cellphoneshop.net/keforrav3.html
- membrane: http://www.cellphoneshop.net/flcaformorav.html

Would this be the best approach for this problem? Is there something else I should consider? Does the power button working indicates some other issue (i.e. something outside of the above parts)?

I'd appreciate any and all info.

No I think this a software problem. It usually occurs after flashing monsterpacks/flexes. Try the keypad flex (scroll down): http://www.planetmotox.net/

This is NOT a software problem. it is a bad side key flex containing the speaker in the upper protion of the flip. It could be a bad LCD module (as the sidekey flex plugs into the LCD module and that could be the short point. It could also be the main key flex, but for the money, change the side key flex first.

Well - there was no monsterpack flashing done as far as I know. Should I still go ahead and try this? If so - would you know of a good page that describes how I would load the .rar. file (planetmotox is full of info but for a beginner it's a bit over whelming).

I certainly would prefer a software solution before opening the beast up.

Are you saying I should install this part:
- membrane: http://www.cellphoneshop.net/flcaformorav.html

or something else? (or should I shell out the $40 to have a web place fix the phone)

you dont even have to INSTALL anything to verify, just UNPLUG the flex speak cir. from the lcd's ZIF connector, then power on the phone to test the keyboard. If it works, CONGRADULATIONS you have successfully solved the problem in one step.

Simply uninstalling the sidekey flex does not always work as a test.

As for buying the flex, the tough part is the possibility that the connector on the LCD is the problem. Now you spent money for nothing.

We generally do this repair for $45 (including the return shipping). The benefit - the phone gets a proper troubleshooting and you spend nothing needlessly.

As another note, small amount of moisture on the right contact can also cause the problem.

Repairs are easy when the problem is obvious (like a cracked part), but when there are several possibilities and you do not have everything to make a proper diagnosis at your hands, it can be a PITA.

Black Cat.. My appologies, I do agree with you in saying that it will not always work. but I wanted to give some hope to the OP. I also do realize that sometimes the 7290086N01FPAR must be replaced with same or newer too (...N06FPAR), as the malfunction may be located inside there too. This can add to the cost of the repair greatly.

I don't think you'd have anything to lose. As to how to open RAR files, download WinRAR (kinda like Winzip, but better. It handles more file formats). It's better to check the software than hardware first. But I'm not saying that it can't be a hardware problem.

Keypad flex on the RAZR sucks. Just takes a little bit of liquid to blow that thing out. Nice easy fix, though. I'd have to say that replacing those is my favorite repair.

Ok try the flex [software], then replace the wires/keypad.

This is NOT the correct part. You need the flex on the upper half of the phone that contains the speaker and side keys. These short out (had 4 in here today) or there is a short at the connector on the LCD PCB where it plugs in.

That's the Keyboard Assembly (flex)
the one he needs is the Flex Circ. Speak (w/ sidekey vol)
