What was your first phone ?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My first was a GE bag phone ... I too wish I could find a picture of it. After a time I actually mounted it in my car a Chevy Cavalier Z24 convertable ... That was back in 1992. This is the kind of phone you see on TV mounted by the shifter. there was a box under the seat about 8"x6"x1", and the antenna was on the trunk.

If memory serves that was with a company called Cellular One.

Next phone was a Panasonic "candy bar" style phone. AS I recall this phones advanced feature was speed dialing... you could push and hold any number key (from 0-9) and it would dial the number associated with it.

Then the Venerable Nokia 5100 series (seems to me Cellular One in our area became 'air touch' at the time - later to become Verizon)

nokia 6800

Motorola 650 (or was it 850?) The "brick" without the flip cover.

Posted by: drocpsu

Ericsson T60LX on an AT&T regional plan. The software response was a little slow, but I really liked the little joystick navigation. Much better than directional buttons on most pre-touchscreen phones. For the same reason that I love the blackberry trackball navigation. You can navigate through all menus, select, etc without ever having to lift your finger. It's much more efficient.

First cell phone was the first Verizon flip phone that permitted you to see the screen whilst closed. Circa 1998. Wouldn't know the model number if it slapped me upside the head with a spatula.

Used that for a while, then was without a cell for years. Picked up a SE s710a a few years ago, upgraded to a Nokia N75 well after I was eligible, then bailed out of that POS and got my Z9.

Best,

My first phone was an Audiovox 8100 (Telus)
My 2nd phone is an LG TM520 (also with Telus)
My 3rd was a Motorola V551(m) (with Rogers)

phone uno: The Sony Ericsson z500a, that thing was a tank, a HUGE tank!

phone deux: The z520, compact+bluetooth+better screen+more features

phone three: The Moto v325i, it was ok

phone 4: the Chocolate, Verizon's demon-child

EL quince: the Sam A670

I only got my first phone last April, because my family's relatively poor, especially for the city I live in, so I have to pay for everything myself.
All on T-Mo, in order, they go:

Samsung t629
Sidekick 3
SE M600i
RAZR V3 (as a loaner)
Nokia 8800
SDA
6500 Slide
RAZR2 V8

Currently use the SDA, however, and still have the V8 and the 8800.

Posted by: gib123

My first phone was the Nokia n95 got it last July when I started to use cellphone.

Alltel Nokia 5165. Back in Fall 2002.

Posted by: bazzo14

Alcatel One Touch 332
Vodafone branded.

Posted by: GaMeBoY439

Mine was the Nextel i730. I really liked that phone; I had a custom housing for it at one point and everything, and i put a lot of games and ringtones on it and stuff. My current phone is the Sprint Touch by HTC, and in between I had an i760....I really have to try a new carrier, lol.

Posted by: twink893

My first phone was a Nokia 232. At the time I worked for a CellularOne outfit in Eau Claire, WI. The best thing was that I installed a 3watt kit in my car. I worked for them as an installation tech so I got to get all the new gadgets and phones when they came to our market to try out. In this area, the 3watt "bag" phones were very popular back then. I loved the phone and still have it. I had to give the 3watt kit back though, when I got the next phone.

nokia 3220, most durable phone I ever had, survived being knocked out of my hand by a snowball and falling out of a car window at 35 mph

My first phone was almost embarassing - although that thing looked so old that it almost already had style again xD

Nokia 7110, I'm too ashamed to post a picture :S

Posted by: Az Scooter

Uniden PCD 1000 It was a great phone, and clearer in analog thanmany digital phones. It lasted me about 3 years before it died. It was also small for the day, about the size of a current non flip phone. When peopel were running around talking how small their motorola bricks were, I would pull mine out of my pocket and they would be in awe.

I was in corporate sales (multiple units/ corp accts) back in the mid-eighties. If I remember correctly, our in-car units were around 1600, and the bag phones were going for 2000. We couldn't get enough of 'em in Detroit....

Circa ~1991 - My first cell phone was a Motorola bag phone. No battery, only a car charger. You could get a battery (2-3 pounds), but who would ever carry a phone around with them all the time

Digiph pcs motorola flip phone. I gave up my pager for it.

Posted by: mamabear8588

My 1st cell phone was an fancy Motorola Star Tac in 1996 on Commnet which was later bought by Verizon. I only got 30 minutes a month, so we basically just had it for emergencies, & text messaging was unheard of around here. I had that phone for 5 yrs & I absolutely loved it! Although I did have to get the manual out whenever I needed to reset the call timer or something. I was upset when I had to give it up because they were getting digital service out here so I had to get a new phone. After that I had a Nokia, I think it was 5580i or something like that. I think it's funny how I fought getting a new phone after 5 yrs. & in the 7 yrs since then I've had 9 cell phones! My 1st camera phone was an LG VX6100, & I just got the LG Voyager.

Posted by: mamabear8588

Reading thru these past posts made me remember back to about 1982 or 1983 when we were at this party & in comes this guy carrying this small black suitcase looking device, it was at least the size of a large shoe box. We were all asking him what it was & he told us it was a telephone, & he showed us the receiver. I thought he was full of it & I know several of my friends thought the same thing, there's no way you could carry a phone around like a walkie talkie!! I sort of remember somebody asking him how to make a call & he said he couldn't get service out here, but I don't remember for sure, but oh how times have changed!! BTW, my husband still says his old bag phone is the best phone he ever had, always got service, & never dropped calls.

Nokia 2160 I believe. It had the wood grain face and everything. My mom bought 3 of them, and gave me one of the bricks as soon as I was able to drive so she could keep tabs on me. I remember thinking I was cool because I figured out the programming code to change the display name from AT&T (or whatever we had) to my name. I used to hate carrying that thing, but if my mom called and I didn't answer I lost my car for a week... so it was like a ball and chain... Litterally, that thing weighed a ton.

Posted by: embellisher

Motorola bag phone (No battery) that I got 'free' when I bought a Ford Escort GT in 1990. First with Metrocel cellular and then Cellular One.

Motorola DynaTAC 8500XL. Actually belonged to my company. I loved going on call, because I got to carry the brick around with me! Nobody but rich guys had DynaTACs back then, and a few corporate guys lucky enough for their boss to buy one of these instead of a built in car phone, or a bag phone. Metrocel cellular.

Qualcomm QCP820 - I remember when I got this one. I was so excited, because it was so small! I could stick it in my front pocket and sit down! Try that with a DynaTAC. Sprint PCS, as it was called back then.

Posted by: Gil 3

My first in '99 was an Ericsson Omnipoint (can't remember the model), which was a brick, but I was proud of it at the time. Since then I have had about 10 phones, mainly Nokias and LG. It's amazing how the cell phone has come such a long way from a huge device to make a call to an ultra compact multi-use status symbol.

Posted by: steve-orama

My first was the motorola microTAC 8700. Fine for its time.

Until 18 February 2009 2359 your AMPS telephone will register. After that date, all analog cellular networks must be shut down. (while ATT and VZW no longer operate their AMPS communications equipment, many local providers still do, (Unicel still maintains their AMPS network, as does Inland Cellular)).

That is wrong after that date analog tv must be shut off...

Posted by: ZexelGTR

My first phone was an LG VX6100. To date, that is the only phone that I've kept for the full 2 years until an upgrade was available.

I actually still have it, but I took it apart to see what was inside...I never got it back together. It was a brave soul.

Posted by: Bill H

A Motorola Ultra Classic II. 92, I think.

It was big and heavy, and ate batteries, but it worked in places that phones still don't work today. Especially when plugged into a cig lighter and a roof antenna. It was our only cell for years, and later we used to carry it in our car for emergencies, in case the digital phone wouldn't reach, but I guess analog is dead, now.

I was aware of the television transition on 18 Feb 2009. I attempted to verify the AMPS transition, and upon research, it appears that there is not a mandatory shutoff date regarding this frequency. However, the FCC ruled that on 18 Feb 2008, cellular providers were no longer required to support AMPS. So, it appears that it will be a voluntary transition, (upgrade as a matter of obsolescence and necessity, not mandate). It also appears there is still at least one IMTS provider left in the United States. If the FCC hasn't forced an upgrade from IMTS, then it appears that AMPS will be with us for a very long time.

I thought this thread was supposed to be about your 1st cellphone, not about the switching off of analog TV & cell towers.

Posted by: shesadiva

My first phone is the very chunky Nokia 5110.
It gets the basic text and call job done.

Posted by: camera_moto88

My first phone was a Nokia 8260 on AT&T Free To Go Wireless prepaid. I think that thing is still laying around somewhere...
