Nokia N73 & 3G

Hey. I've got an Cingular/AT&T 8525 and an Nokia N73. The N73 is supposed to be able to get on the 3G Network - but while my 8525 has no problem accessing it, the N73 can't seem to get onto it.

If I manually set the phone to access the UMTP network, it never finds AT&T as a network and I can't make a call.

Anyone have an idea?

I was under the impression that the n73 and cingulars 3g network were incompatible

N73 uses the 2100mhz band for UMTS.

Cingular uses 850/1900mhz.

There's your problem.

Oh. Well.
That sucks. Hard. I mean, I've got the 8525, so it's not the end of the world, but still.

Uh, any idea if that will be changing? If Cingular will be jumping up to 2100 at all?

It'll never happen.

Go to Europe to use it

Now Cingular will never use 2100. Just 850/1900 for WCDMA/UMTS/3G

Won't happen, since that band isn't available for 3G in North America. You may hear that the recent AWS auction was for spectrum in the 2100 band, but it won't be compatible with Europe's frequencies, so the N73 can't use it.

I guess what confused me was that on gsmarena.com (along with every other website), it lists the N73 as:

UMTS / GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

So that's why I thought it would work. Hmmph. I'm kinda ticked off now.

GSM Arena does not do a good job with listing the 3G freqs. It just says UMTS or HSDPA. It does not list the freqs. The freqs it lists are for the GSM part.
