Problems with usb drivers...I think

Alright, I am sure people are tired of hearing this particular problem, but no matter what I do it isn't working. A break-down of what I have done, if you will:

1. Bought a cable from Sprint PCS for Sanyo phones.
2. Looked for hours for a driver that didn't show a notepad icon with a gear on it (just about every single one I downloaded did this...even after extraction).
3. Found driver by dl'ing Sprint connectivity software.
4. Installed the sanyo driver.
5. Plugged my phone into the laptop via usb cable.
6. Power cycled my phone.
7.Nothing.
8. Repeat steps 5-7 3 more times (available number of usb ports) after restarting my computer.

AND I STILL GET NO FOUND NEW HARDWARE WIZARD!!!!

any ideas on how to make my stupid computer find my phone?
oh, and I have bitpim for getting the pics...just how do i get my comp to recognize and find my phone???

It would probably help a lot if you mentioned what phone you had.

Also, what version of Windows are you running and when was the last time you ran Windows Update?

With an up-to-date Windows system, you should be able to simply connect the phone to the computer with no software or driver installation necessary. I did just that when I bought my 8400.

oops. I have windows XP home edition, I have a sanyo scp-8100, and I last ran update 3 days ago. Does that hep you help me???

Do you have reasonable access to another Windows machine? Trying to connect your phone to another computer is the easiest way to determine if it's your laptop or your phone that's having issues.

When I connect my 8400, I get a prompt on my phone asking whether I want pictbridge mode or mass storage mode. Do you see a similar prompt on your phone?

I tried your suggestion on my grandmother's computer...still nothing. And it would help if I could download the specific driver for my phone and have it actually install (and not have the notepad icon with a gear over it) instead of a generic sanyo driver. What do you think? If you can find one, can you tell me, step for step, how to get it to work? And why my computer won't open the found new hardware wiz? I have seen others be able to get their pics and stuff off of their 8100's...but mine won't even communicate with my computer. Could something else be wrong?

First, the notepad with the gear over it simply indicates the file has a valid (for Windows) driver name extension. The only way to "install" it is to have the New Hardware Wizard open it and properly configure it, or to put it in the proper folder yourself. It is not like an .exe file that you can run and have it install for you.

Try copying the driver file into the following two directories:

C:\Windows\System

C:\Windows\System32

Then reboot your computer and retry connecting the phone.

If that doesn't work, my only other recommendation is to wipe your hard drive clean and reinstall Windows, update it fully and try again.

However, seeing as you've tried to connect the phone to two different computers with no success, it's looking like there's something wrong with your phone. It wouldn't hurt to take it into the Sprint store and have them install the newest operating software and firmware. This will also help eliminate a faulty port [the USB cable attaches to] on your phone as the cause of your problem.
