Replace 8801 glass lens and front cover

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've watched the video multiple times and still cant see how the front stainless steel cover is removed. Is it just levered off with the tool, allowing it to slide off? Can the glass display screen be removed without disassembly by levering it off. (I thought it was attached with adhesive.

Thanks in advance for your response.

there is four T5 screws holding the "UI Cover Revision 2" on. You must completely disassemble it to get to those screws, also you need to peel the Back Plate sticker off to access the top most 2 screws too.

doesnt sound like something easily done. With regard to the glass LCD cover, is it just attached with adhesive, and can be easily replaced?

thanks again.

any updates on how easy it is or isnt to replace?

I ordered an OEM lens off ebay (one of those off-shore co's) and am waiting for the part to arrive. In the interim, maybe someone who's done it will post their experience. I'm hoping it's just pry the old off with a wedge and attach the replacement. I'm doing it right this time and will install a Martin Fields overlay before installing the new lens. I'll post my experience when done. Thanks.

thanks for that update. I just got a phone off of ebay with an LCD issue, and I'm hoping to replace it with a new one and get it working. It seems to have an outer screen that needs to be replaced as well. Hopefully I can find someone's experience with replacing that and can post it here to share with you.. good luck

I received the OEM glass lens from an ebay supplier today and replaced the original. Not a difficult task. Used a credit card to pry the old glass lens off the phone and then insured no adhesive remained before installng the new one. The new one came with 3M adhesive on the back and fit perfectly.

I could not get the Martin Fields overlay to fit properly to my liking and opted to cover the glass with a Fellows screen protector.

was your new glass replacement actual glass? I've seen some that are not and turned out to be a really hard plastic. If you would be kind enough to share who you got it from possibly via PM that would be great. thanks

why would you pry it off? the nokia 8801 UI Cover (Glass Lens) is all once piece. The glass is permanently part of the metal surrount. if you bought just the actual glass, you got ripped and got a fake.

it's possible that it was cracked or broken. from some serious protrusion

Actually, the glass cover is secured to the surround by adhesive only. It's not permanent and was easily removed. If the original gets scratched, broken, chipped etc. it's an easy replacement.

Yea, the glue started bleeding behind the glass lens so it was appearing as a jagged line on the screen.

I took it to an authorized Nokia repair shop to see if warranty would cover repair, they said no because it was caused by excessive heat and thus my fault! new screen $60.

I live in Atlanta and don't leave it in direct sun but true the area in the dash under the radio gets very warm but not hot enough to cook dinner! I think Nokia used bad glue.

Anyway, i figured i'd see if i could redo the glue, pit fall for me of prying was that the old glass broke. So i ordered a new screen off ebay. Though I'm pretty sure it is plastic. Well 99% sure. I've just asked a u.s. seller on ebay if the oem 8801 screen they have is the hardened glass.

I'm surprised no one else has experienced the bleeding glue on the back of the lens. Maybe i should leave a hot pocket in my dash when i drive to see if it cooks.

Its MORE WORK plus prone to more errors to try to replace just the GLASS portion only on the UI Cover. I recommend to just replace the entire UI Cover all together. Not sure why they are seperating the glass from it and selling the glass seperately, the adhesive is not recommended for reusing, and a lot of the times, the ui frame is damaged/warped/dented too from the glass being broken.
