Blackberry Internet Service

I am thinking about moving for a Windows Mobile Smart Phone to an 8800. My biggest gripe with my Windows Smart Phone is that it does not have any option to leave messages on the POP/IMAP server. This means I have to select "Download headers only" in order to keep my messages on the server. This is a pain because it takes a while to download a message that I want/need. Here are my questions (I searched, but could not find the answers, so forgive me if this has been covered):

1. How does Blackberry personal email work? I have a Comcast email account, which I would like to receive messages from on my BB. At the same time, when I get home I would those messages to still be there (unless a deleted them) when I fire up Thunderbird. Is this possible? I would like to do the same thing with other POP/IMAP accounts.

2. Does the $30 Cingular BIS plan allow me to surf the web? I assume it does, but I wanted to check.

3. What if I wanted to connect this device with my companies BES as well? Would I be able to do this with the BIS plan? I'm not sure if this it totally possible yet, since it seems that all network traffic on my corporate BB goes through the corporate BES server, wich I would not want to do on a personal phone.

Thanks for the help!

One more question to add here, Do you have to have the data with a blackberry like you do with VZW, or is there a data block option you can add to your account?
Thanks

Let me answer some of these questions, though don't consider me an expert. I am looking to change to a BB from a Cingular 2125. I need to have constant access to email and this may suit my needs.

1. It is my understanding that the BB does not delete email, unless you delete it. It just sends the emails to your phone.

2. Have no idea... I don't surf the web on a phone.

3. You can have 10 accounts on a BB. I need my work email and thought it would be nice to get my personal email also (back in college and a small social life).

Hope that helps somewhat.... I am waiting for the BB Curve. I want a camera phone, it is fun to send the pictures as I travel around the country to my wife and kids. They send me pictures back too... The GPS feature of the 8800 is pretty interesting though. If I can get a cheap bluetooth camera I might go with the 8800 (assuming I could pair them).

That's fine about deleting email. I am wondering how the BB email works. Will I have to forward the mail from say my Comcast account to the BB account?

I know the stores will push you into the BB data plan, but I don't think you need it (I'm no expert). I know on regular cell phone/smart phones if you don't have a data plan you just pay $0.10 per KB. I would think there would be similar pricing with BB's if you don't have a BB plan.

I thought my brother was able to cancel the data on his Q on VZW as well.

You can block the data on everything but the berry's now with VZW, but i wasnt sure if you could block data on the Blackberry's with ATT. Or maybe delete the data settings in them so they dont have a number to dial out on.

1. On the BB, when you want to delete an e-mail it gives you the option to delete it from both from BB and from your e-mail account or just from the BB.
2. Yes.
3. If you want to connect to your company's BES, you need the BES plan.

If you plan to use the BB for data (e-mail/web), you must have the BB plan.

Thanks for the reply!

How does the BB personal service get the email from my other POP accounts? I am trying to avoid forwarding email from any of my accounts.

So if you can surf the web using the $30 plan, are there any data limits? I see the 4mb plan, BIS plan, and two BES plans. So with the 4mb plan you are limited to 4mb, but with the BIS there is no limit?

Sorry for the threadjack, but I'm confused on some of the same questions!

It pushes it, the same as it would on the BES plan.

In regards to surfing the web on your BB device, there's no limit (on the BIS plan).

On a side note, the major difference between the BIS and BES plan, beyond the price, is the ability to connect to your company's BES. They both handle e-mail the same way and you get unlimited Internet with both. One (I am sure you can figure which one) is just meant for "regular" customers who have no need for BES.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8800: BlackBerry8800/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

BIS supports POP accounts without the need for forwarding from Comcast. If you wanted "push" email, then you can forward from your Comcast to your @mycingular.blackberry.net email account and change the Reply To address within BIS to match the Comcast account.

Email is automatically pushed to your device from RIM. To keep the mail on the server, go into Outlook (or Thunderbird if that is what you use) and select leave messages on the server and then tell it how many days to leave it. Comcast is one of the accounts I have on my 8800. I have 7 accounts right now. Keep in mind however, that all mail will come into the "Messages" folder and also to their individual account folders. Delete it in one place and it is gone from the BB. Generally, deleting email on the BB will not delete it from the server.

The BB Unlimited Personal Plan gives both Internet and email (BIS).

To connect to BES, you will need the BES plan, 44.99 or 39.99 with a qualifying voice plan. Personally, I would not use my personal BB on a company BES as the company IT polices could cripple some functions on the BB. Talk to your company BES Admin.

Is this the case whether I setup email though the "Personal email setup" website or using the BB redirector on the desktop manager?

Edit: I found the answer to my question on Nextel's website (I know I have Cingular). I guess the RIM service goes out an polls the POP/IMAP server every so often to see if their are new messages to be pushed to the device?
