Cingular and Java??

OK, so I see lots of posts about SPECIFIC phones for Cingular that're basically screwed for third party aps with Java. What I'm wondering is is this ACROSS the board, or only for specific PDA style phones? More important, is there ANY phone that Cing hasnt screwed out of this ability? I'm fairly sane, and much as I like the *IDEA* of the Iphone, I also remember how badly new companys tend to screw things up they're first venture into the Cellular market, so NOT quite willing to take that plunge yet. So, any ideas?

Cingular seems to be modifying the Java on the 3G non-smart phones as far as I can tell. The N75, I believe, doesn't have this limitation. Perhaps the WM5 phones don't either? I guess they want you to use their apps only, which sucks and is rediculous. It's your money and your bandwidth... It's like having AT&T DSL, but only being able to go to yahoo.com.

As for the iPhone, that is a 'closed system,' meaning that nothing will load on the phone, from what I've read. No Java, no 3rd party, no stuff developed for it. Hardly a smartphone if you ask me... Just a big, 2g phone with pretty animations, yet far less useful than even my w810i.

My 2 cents.
