Hating the Q...switch to Blackjack or E62?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

On VZW now and had a Q since last July. Damn thing sucks. Shuts off randomly, drops calls, etc. I've even done all the software updates and it still sucks. Thinking of moving to AT&T and am considering the Blackjack or the E62. I'm looking at these two because I need a device that does Goodlink email for work and these two seem to fit the bill in that regard. Most important thing is to have the actual phone function well, i.e. reception, etc. and then next priority is Goodlink. Other bells and whistles are nice but I need something that does the basics well first and foremost. If anyone has any comments or opinions please let me know. Thx.

Well the Blackjack is essentially the same thing as a Q. Both are Windows Mobile 5 Smartphones.

The E62 is one of the best phones/pda devices I've ever owned. I had the Blackjack for about 3 days, and got rid of it...buttons were way too small and HTC seems to be the only one who knows how to make a good windows phone.

The cons are:

*java permissions are a pain in the butt (google maps and opera mini)
*very slow UI in comparison to the blackjack
*no camera (although the bj's camera sucks)

You get used to the slowness of the UI, but the java permissions suck.

I will second the comment that the e62 is awesome! It really is, it is a Nokia of course. The issues are a slow UI and the fact it doesn't have a camera. I just got a Blackjack, coming from the Treo 750, and I really like the Blackjack. I used to have the e62 and to compare them, I think they both are great phones, but the slow UI is what did me in with the e62. If you just need a good phone and GoodLink, and you liked what the Q did when it work, which is where I was, then give the Blackjack a shot

E62 is really nice, especially since you can get a refurb for free from Cingular. E61 is better, though, and only a couple hundred bucks these days. It has WiFi and VoIP. One of the features I miss most is being able to print from the phone to a network printer. It was really handy to be able to print out emails, web pages, and documents that were attached to an email or that were created on the phone. There are only two phones I'd rather have (and only if they had US 3G, which they don't): The $400 E61i, which is a redone E61 with a decent camera and the E90, which is Nokia's latest Communicator phone. Huge, but has more memory than any phone out there, an enormous screen on the inside and a large screen on the outside, and generally will do anything. The downside to that is the over $1000 price tag! I'm actually thanking Nokia they haven't released that with US 3G, since it keeps me from spending that much money on a phone.

FWIW, the java permissions are a pain, but google maps can certainly be used in a pinch. It asks you once for each new connection, so you hit 'yes' once and it downloads all the tiles for the part of the map that's showing without asking again. It does make it difficult to pan, though! It's usable in a pinch. I'd take the E61, though.

The downside to both of them is that they don't support 3G in the US (or in the E62's case, anywhere), so you're stuck with EDGE, although I don't find EDGE that bad.

One thing I don't get about xj911's post is why on earth he'd be using Opera Mini when he's got the S60 browser available. It's by far the best browser on any phone.

You know I actually thought about the E61i but I wasn't sure how hard it would be to input all the Cingy settings for internet, mail, etc.

I luv Nokia phones, however, if I had to make a choice and the battery life was better, then it would be the BlackJack.
When/If Nokia decides to make a qwerty phone that supports UMTS/HSDPA, then it is a wrap...

Nokia has the settings for just about all their phones on their website. I set up my E61 that way. Also, if you are for something with Goodlink, the Treo 750 has that as well if you want to have a phone with a touchscreen.

It doesn't really make a difference for email alone. I have decided to stop buying new Nokias until they bring out a QWERTY with US 3G. I might get an N75, but I'd probably rather spend the money on a new lens anyway.

Click my sig I got a review of the BJ and the E62. I like the BlackJack better. Great call quality and I think the camera is decent. But that's me.

Thanks for all the great feedback!

I've got both the E62 and the Blackjack and I prefer the Blackjack.

I wish I could take all of the best parts of the E62 and the BJ and put them together.

E62 Positives
Screen (Large and sharp)
Keyboard is better than Blackjack
Browser
EDGE is class 11, Its fast enough for regular internet viewing.
Battery Life is awesome!

E62 negatives
Very wide (not easy to hold for smaller handed folks)
LAG! This is what really made me switch to the BJ.
I get lots of text messages and its a pain to open up the SMS
application, Deleting is a chore.

Blackjack Positive
Size (Fits perfectly in my hands and very ergonomic)
Feel (love the rubbery non slip back)
Internet Speed! Slingbox is awesome on 3G
scroll wheel
Stereo Bluetooth

Blackjack Negative
Keyboard is not good for large handed people.
Battery Life sucks!
Charging Port location sucks.

-------------------

The UI on both devices are fine with me. Some swear by Symbian S60 but I find both do their jobs well.
WM5 is great cause I can use my slingbox where my Symbian E62 I could not. And there is still no time table when Slingmedia will release the Symbian version.
Both have very good speakerphones and reception on both are very good.
Since I have both and got to use them I would say the Blackjack would be my choice.

I too own(ed) both. I just sold the e62 because although it's a close call, the Blackjack won me over.

Popcorn already outlined each phone's pros and cons, so I won't repeat his great summary. All-in-all it depends on your own priorities. The e62 does a few things really well, while the Samsung does many things pretty well.

You know, what's confusing is the difference you'll hear about the Blackjack regarding call quality. I am one who has many random dropped calls. I hear other people saying the same thing. I am on my 2nd BJ and have the same problem. I DO NOT have this problem with my Treo 680 or Pearl. Just the BJ. I am in a non-3G area. Could this be the problem?

Just be aware of this issue. For me it was so bad (2-3 calls per day) I stopped using it.

I haven't had a dropped call yet and the sound quality is pretty good actually. The only gripe I have with call issues is the delay when you press answer and the time it takes to connect. Besides that everythingelse is kosher.

Also, I get better signal bars on EDGE than I do 3G.

Arghh I hate that too!!! By the time the other person can hear me I'm already irritated and the other person can tell

Haha, yea when I first got the Blackjack I would say "Hello" and then wait for a response only to hear background noise or gum chewing, etc. only to find out that there is a 1 second delay when it connects.

Also wish Speakerphone was on the soft key instead in the menu. Even though it takes only two button presses it still would be nice.

#menu
#3 to activate Speakerphone.
