When you initially get a BB, does the PIN automatcially register with the carrier? I have a ATT curve and I am going to get it unlocked for TMO. Do i first have to get the PIN released by ATT before i will be able to use it on TMO?

If the handheld is new and not been used before then you do not have to get the PIN released.

i've made one call...does that count?...i've had no email transfers.

The PIN will not register when you make a fone call. What I meant by my previous post was nobody has used this BlackBerry before and it's never been tied to an account so there is no need to have the PIN released. If you've registered the PIN on Cingular (at&t) then unlock it and switch to T-Mobile then you would need the PIN released.

Thank you for the help...and i apologize if i am not understanding correctly...i singed up for ATT a few hours ago, i made one call on the phone and have made no email exchanges. So when you say "register" the PIN would that happen automatically? I guess i'm wondering what you have to do to actually register the pin. thanks again.

By register, I think you are talking about setting up a BIS (email) account. If you have not done that, you shoudl be OK. When you set up the BIS, you enter the IMEI and PIN so RIM knows where to send the email.

When you activate your phone on at&t or tmo, they will plug int he IMEI and PIN which will register the device on their network and allow it to be provisioned. You would just need to cancel your at&t service before moving to tmo. Make sure at&t doesn't hit you witht he cancellation fee though.

so if i get a pearl from tmo that has data refused, then unlock it & use it with cingular, does that mean the PIN is new and unused? my friend wants to sell me his tmo pearl

Data refused means there is no data plan current set up on the device. Has nothing to do with the device being used before or not.

Why not ask your friend if he bought it new and never had a data connection?
