Took WM6 for a ride & it looks good.
My experience:
1.MS Office didn't recognize word.doc...had to browse to open
2.A little tough on the battery
3.Device didn't run hot but stayed warm
4.CorePlayer w/n play .wmv
5.Keys function differently
6.No Voice Command

Overall .. the ROM runs and looks great and I will be updating when the final release is out.

Before anyone tries this update .. make sure you have your current ROM version and that your pc is properly configured with all the drivers.

I installed WM6 and ran with if for a while. Overall nice (call logs, better calendar, etc), but the lack of "sticky" keys and a recurring issue where the phone hangs when on a call and receiving another call drove me back to WM5. That hanging call issue where I can not end the call and all keys stop working won't work for me, so I'll wait for the official release.

i too am concerned about the phone not being able to hang up sometimes...but wm 6 is really nice overall. how have you been able to end the calls with this issue?

I am thinking about going back to WM5 but I can not locate the rom anywhere. I have checked on Samsung Website and google it but cannot find it anywhere. Can anyone help me please.

Hi Everyone! I've been a lurker for a few days now and read this entire post from first to page 27, a lot of great info. I decided to do a test yesterday, installed wm6 without any problem, the battery didn't get at 'hot' as everyone else said but then later it was ok, however, because of the lost of Internet Sharing option, and the key for messeging on my keypad doesn't work when pressed down (but it does turn backlight off after pressing it a while), I decided to return back to wm5.

Either way, took a lot of playing around, re-installing programs, etc.

Also had to do a hard reset to get the sending email option working well as well.

WIthout this forum and this thread, I wouldn't be able to try to 'play' with my Blackjack. thanks!

Ok...I've read most of the posts...I wound up updating to WM6 last night, everything works perfect, except....

mp3 ringtone thing is annoying and I haven't been able to sit down long enough to edit the reg key and delete the "maxfilesize" folder under sounds...

also...

the whole backlight/ screen thing is freaking me out...not so much during the day, but I charge my phone right next to my bed and when the screen just turns on for 10 seconds randomly it freaks me out...this happens about every 3-4 minutes.

does anyone have the solution to the backlight malfunction??? please post if you do, when I can't get the little things to work correctly it starts to annoy me.

I know lots of people complain about battery life on the BJ. I am in all day meetings and ALL the Palm owners with 750/680/650 are constantly running and putting their Palms on chargers..... I never have too with the regular battery. WM6 Beta Rules

You can get the unlimited text plan for $20 and still get the rebate.

the other caller ended the call, then I had to take the battery out to reset the phone. I really like WM6, so hopefully they'll get that bug fixed prior to official release.

I installed this update a little under 2 weeks ago.

I never had a hot battery and short battery life. I don't know if my battery is lasting longer but it is going an extra couple hours before it drops one notch. With WM5 around 5pm I would drop one bar off the battery. It does not drop down one until 8pm. Exact same usage!

Bluetooth is now doing phone book transfer to my BMW BT!!

Can someone please tell me how to turn the phone on in flash mode. Unless I'm just holding the wrong buttons down it's not working for me. I tried it with the sim out and in, microsd card out and in and it just opens up regularly. Is there a step I need to take beforehand? The modem driver is installed but I can't get past to the first step of turning the phone on in flash mode. Thanks

turn the phone off, and hook up the usb cable. hold the camera button (on the right side) and the right soft key (immediately right of the d-pad) and press and release the power button. when it comes on let go of the buttons.

I think you need to hold and press the power button for about 1 second or at least a bit longer than just tapping it.

I suspect this is the quirk with bluetooth radio implementation in WM6 currently for this phone. Whenever it detect other BT device, the screen would light up. At this that the case for me when I had the phone in my car with bt connection. Phone is not linked via BT but the fact that BT is present in the car cause the screen to light up every few minute. Turning BT off on phone and problem goes away. There are many other BT problem with WM6 on this phone. Hopefully they got things addressed quickly.

Internet Sharing is the application that allows you to use your phone with Bluetooth PAN.

and you can also tether with it quickly using the blackjack as a 'modem' to go online on remote places...

which is what I need when traveling

Haven't had any other problems with the new ROM, except this one...and this one was reallly killing me...draining my battery like crazy due to the screen being lit up 24/7.

Turning BT off isn't too bad for me...I only use handsfree..and use it really only on long drives...so no worries hear.

Also, just so everyone knows...ever since the WM6 download...i could swear I have A LOT better reception...has anyone else noticed that?? Let me know..

hey guys...back again...

Everything so far so good w/ WM6...except the whole 300KB limit on the mp3 ringtones...

I've tried several times to install a reg editor on my BJ...but it just doesnt seem to work for me...

Would someone be so kind to post step by step directions on how to install a reg editor on the phone, and then remove the file that is required to allow ringtones greater than 300KB?

Is there a specific place on the phone (file) that you need to put the reg editor? And when you put the file on the phone should it be unzipped or zipped?

If the file is unzipped it doesn't show up on my phone...it's weird, I just can't find it...but if it's zipped, I can see it.

If I unzip it on the phone, nothing happens...I don't get it.

Great update I was able to have my gmail set to my email on the phone. I couldn't do that with WM5. My service is a little better and the internet in improved. Glad I updated, now I can actually use all the ablities blackjack was made for.

Tried WM6 yesterday but found out that now I can't sync my Urge subscription music, so I'll be downgrading back to WM5. Other than that though I had no issues with it and can't wait for the final release.

things are definitly snappier...only thing i notice is when i use the phone heavy the battery doesnt last as long..assuming once this is final that wont be a problem...otherwise seems to be ok..(push email is sometimes slow weird because i am running exchange 2007)...

Has anyone tested this WM6 build with the motorola HF850? I bought it with images of great bluetoothness in my mind and then realized after fighting with it that there is an incompatibility with that car kit and the BJ...it crashes the bluetooth stack. Anyone tried it?

use the directions from samsungs website, except run the wm6 upgrade exe instead of theirs (obviously). The big thing is to be sure that your modem drivers installed correctly, and that you have a fully charged battery. For some reason the phone doesn't charge when it is set to modem mode. I had no trouble with the update. also be sure to sync your data, and backup any files saved on the phone's memory, because they will be gone after the flash.

so far WM6 is pretty great, they have really polished the interface, and made some big improvements to the PDA functionality of the phone. Office mobile is nice, but is a little awkward on the smartphone interface. There are a couple of little bugs that i have found where occasionally the end button stops working. I'll have to reboot the phone to get it back. Also there seems to be a memory leak so you may have to reboot every 2 days or so. I can usually find a few minutes to go through the reboot process pretty painlessly, so it hasn't been a big deal.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Shell/StartMenu delete it from there with Resco reg editor, if it wont let you with that then you need to app unlock first then delete.

All I needed to do was connect to my phone with ActiveSync, explore the device and go to \Windows\Start Menu and delete the shortcuts. They are no longer in my listing.

that didnt work to me, i had to do the app unlock first, then i was able to delete them using resco by browsing to the start menu folder.

any of you guys running this software notice battery issues and heat issues? for the first time ever today my blackjack was SOOO HOT...i couldnt believe it, quick shut it down and let it sit for a while and restarted it. seems fine, but damn...it got hot. anyone eles have this happen? anyone notice battery length times decrease with this?

I read the instructions from the samsung site about how to install the modem, and i used the new WM6 rom, during the loading of the rom i had already removed the sim card and my storage card. I had this error msg on the rom, "id[0]-[com6] PHONE download fail.- "

When i turn the phone on the version shows the right but phone is blank, of course i cant make any calls it acts like the antenna is turned off.. the phone says it cannot access the sim, but i put the card back in, i hard reset the phone.. please help!

Have you tried loading the rom again? It sounds as if the PDA part of the ROM loaded up, but the phone part did not.

ive tried one rom now i am trying another one from a different site.. they both seem the same though i just recently bought my phone i wonder if that has something to do with this.. it looks to fail during the 3rd stages about 60 % through the code part..

Sounds like you may have a corrupt flash chip inside the phone :\

VitoCopyPaste works great for copy and pasting.. although I suppose that doesn't help if your phone wont work :O

Well after talking to both Samsung and Cingular on the phone (gosh how i hate overseas tech support) i found out the phone was toasted, after it wouldnt load the phone, and i was on WM6 i couldnt go into connections USB and take it off Active Sync and put it back to Modem because the phone would said that the modem doesnt work in the antenna/phone off mode ( it didnt call it airport mode but ive seen it called that on other phones ). So I am lucky i bought the phone about 15 days ago... went to the mall and go another one in about an hour but spent all day doing this.. I recommend if you have bought your phone recently not to try this, but if its old as hell and u might wanna buy a new one and dont care give it a shot

geez i still cant believe i wasted so long fired my phone and lost all my contacts what a jip stay with the WM5 until a real release comes out and then call tech support make sure you get a NEW phone not refurb if your phone cracks out like mine did

so you tried out an unsupported ROM and you expect AT&T to send you a NEW phone?

what do you think they do with phones like yours? refurb & resell or send out to someone else.

they should send you a bill for the time they had to deal with you instead of sending you a new phone.

This is a full working version of WM6, mine works flawlessly, who actually uses hotmail or live mail? screw the *LIVE* features.

funny, I missed the part where Blackjack owners were obligated to a "Full Working Version of WM6", a product I've never heard of before. Perhaps you mean Windows Mobile 6 Professional or Standard? (The Blackjack will be getting Standard.)

I appear to have also missed the part where Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone or Windows Mobile 6 Standard were advertised as having copy and paste functionality.

a quick search would have yielded that WM6 Std does NOT have this, but Vito copy paste DOES work with WM5...and has since the BJ was release 9 months ago...

You can attempt to load a leaked ROM on your device, you can use a message board, but you can't frickin use GOOGLE???????

I was under the impression that rich email was available in WM6. I upgraded yesterday, but plain text is grayed out in active sync (both on device and pc.) Deleted server to add at the setup, but it was still unavailable... does anyone have any insight?

Also, I have had no problems with the update. Battery life is good, no apparent memory leaks or heat issues. I was able to unlock it with the SDA Application unlock and installed OmapClock and OmapClock plus so that it is now overclocked to 240. That seemed to make the biggest difference as it no longer hangs or moves slowly through the menus. I also added the common registry hacks without issue. As far as I am concerned it is operating as well as, if not better than WM5.

I did an upgrade to WM6 last night...and it went off like a champ! There were some issues, which I'm sure some of the experts at scouring the web have discovered:

1) Depressing the alpha keys for extended time with a number or symbol do not work as before; I have to hold down the Fn key to get the number or symbol above the letter to work.

2) I have an Exchange account with 1and1.com, which requires me to setup a device password, and in turn when I attempt to sync to pc, instead of it automatically doing so, I have to enter the pw on the device first, (although I confess that it may be user error on my part, since as of this morning, I have not been able to sync at all.)

3) Remove Programs is completely empty.

Now this is where it gets interesting (and I am scouring other forums for help on this), last night, when I upgraded, it worked like a champ. This morning, I was playing around with settings-->display-->homescreen and it was okydoky.....10 minutes later, when i went to some other settings: phone, sounds, display, profiles, regional settings, owner info...i get the error "ERROR the settings could not be opened."

Now because i believe in the Socratic Method, I know this can be fixed, I don't know what I may have done to have caused this, I don't think it is nessessarily (sp) a bug.

All in all, my phone works, I can make calls, it has a variation of MS office, the email's ability to process HTML, and ease of use I think its all good. I took the risk knowing full well the consequences of doing a non "sanctioned" upgrade, so im not *****ing, simply making observations.

If anyone here has done the upgrade and has any input as to the issue I may have, I'm all eyes!

The DASH ics exe and dll are posted here and execute but you still do not get it working. I have the BTPAN1 and other comm keys dumped (odly PANU is the default but no client software ia about ...dang that would be sweet as per my last post). The only file I think I need now is the iptable.dll.

An aside:At one time I was successful copying ROM exes over to the SD and then to the PC but that luck isn't present right now ;D (how I don't know ...) I recall that the file was copied via total commander then copied to the pc but it wasn't visible unless I altered the attributes via the command prompt. This was with the 607 first came out. I reinstalled the wm5 and tried this but no luck. However I got a 2GB card yesterday and when copying the old data to the PC for transfer to the new card, I got a message concerning the ICS file. In my 'too quick to hit enter' mood, I screwed up and wasn't able to determine if it was the rom file ...doubt it, but... or another I had around.

DUN over usb works thought.

I flashed my phone and I have had no problems with it. I looked in the remove programs folder and all the programs that I installed are there. I don't really mind using the Fn button to get the alternate character on the buttons.

ok
got the phone ready by restarting and putting it into the load mode

Started wm6 file then plugged in the BJ and it started to update the BJ
Then i got the windows error on my computer and it stopped the updating process, frooze it when the error came up

So i restarted everything but i keep getting that windows error
and now my BJ is stuck at the 1st screen saying windows in Blue and wont go past that.

I think thats all.

manually reset the device. It requires a series of key presses. It should get it back up.

Alternatively, with it off, using the key presses from Samsungs site will start it in Modem mode (which should at least come on). If your having problems then perhaps you got a bad file or it doesn't like you machine. Try another XP machine and see if you yield better results.

Not App unlocked, as it is a rom update..I have a cingular BJ and I was able to upgrade flawlessly, but bear in mind that the WM6 floating out there is not the final release

ok I have a couple of issues with this beta version.

I have installed it on mine and my cousins blackjack and now when we answer a call it is delayed about 5 seconds before they can hear me. I use the phone for my two businesses and it is very frustrating when I answer and they don't here me and we play the HELLO HELLO GAME.

Does anyone else have this issue.

Yes I am using, and it is working great. on second thought, from the other post, I have noticed a delay SOMETIMES when answering a call, but not often, all in all it has been a good upgrade. I like the html ability of the emails, the word and excel on the phone. someone made a comment that you cant create a doc, just edit, however, what i do is have a blank .txt file, open that, work on it, then save AS a doc, and voila!

The one thing I have noticed, and if anyone can chime in on this, is that at times, my signal just drops, I lose the call, I look at the phone and I have no bars, then a sec later they come back.

Can anyone else second the answer delay. Honestly we need a simple summary of Pro's/Con's of this update. I'll start it, but bare in mind that I haven't done the upgrade, but read through the pages. Anyone is free to correct this.

Why don't you just use the Gmail or Opera Mobile that was designed for your device and stop using the crappy java versions.

Using the REAL versions will integrate into your device and offer a lot better service then anything java can do.

The only java I'll run are games.

All of it is running fine, getting good speed, no errors. Couple times the Calls drop, but not sure if thats because of the OS or just pur ineptitude of AT&T. Yes, I have to hold down the Fn key to get the symbols/numbers above the letters, but its not a major issue. I dont have ICS, but I'm with the understanding that the final release, that will be resolved. Again, not a major issue. I am greatly enjoying Pocket Office as a standard app as opposed to having to purchase a third party app.

To summarize: do I think it was worth it? Yes. I think that for most of us on the boards here or at other sites, we like to play, experiment, tear apart, rebuild...its part of the fun IMO.

Am I anxious for the final release? Yes, I am and am excited, but it has been fun.

On another note: is anyone that is running WM6 familiar with the Company Directory that is in the phone book list?

I like the beta uograde. I do notice some long 20 second lockups with lots of apps going. But you take the good with the bad. I dont plan on using my BJ much anyway, but it seems good.

just installed the wm6 leak after much debate, and now that i've done it i can say it's well worth it (for someone like me) i love even the default themes, everything is much more polished than 5. i also love how almost all of the menus open instantly. haven't experienced any issues with horrible battery consumption and the only time it got hot was right after i flashed it and a reset fixed that. no issues with calls hanging, either.

if you're a nerd for this kind of thing it's definitely worth a look

I have followed the instructions exactly but still get the stupid "select an image to download" when I click the start button in the updater... I have checked device manager and all the modem drivers are installed correctly... I have tried 3 different downloads to hopefully eliminate a corrupt file as the cause...

I just installed the leaked version wm6 and its working nicely. The only thing is that you cant hold down the button to get the second symbol, you would have to press the Fn key. Otherwise it works. The graphics is smooth and also the icons. The internet is fast, even for Edge. The only thing is that mobile office doesnt come with a pdf reader.

Is your blackjack in flash mode when you try to flash it? Hold the right sofkey and the shortcut key on the right below the jogwheel while you turn on the phone, then let go.

That was easy!

One of the more easier flashes.

One thing I haven't heard thats awesome, is the ability to go into a folder and press up, and it takes you to the bottom. Normally you had to manually scroll through everything to get to the bottom. This is a feature I'm gonna enjoy.

Did a Sprite restore and applied a app unlock cab... once it reset I couldn't get into Settings and my power button didn't bring up a menu.

I haven't found anything that specifically going into depth about what each color setting does... but I've just downloaded a Hex Color Selector, which spits out the HEX color codes.

First I select a color that is similar to the one I'm trying to change, then look for any colors within the code that resemble it, because if they are similar in color, the codes will be only slightly varied. Then I pick a color I want to change it to, and just replace a few until its the right one.

Always keep a backup copy in case you make a change and screw something up.

Are you wanting to change the Orange highlight? I've done it before but I couldn't tell you want it was I changed without playing with it. My current theme has that orange too, so when you find it post it here.

I bookmarked several good sites that list the homescreens, but none of them actually go into detail about what does what.

Right now I'm just using the default simple layout with the greenLT background. Its kinda nice. My WM5 custom homescreen put wierd white boxes all across the top of my homescreen, so I'm guessing there are some differences in plugins or something.

I really like the stock samsung homescreens because they have the menu's that you scroll through and/or pop-up and whatnot. Its different thats all. So my next quest will just be taking one of those and editing it to my liking.

Yea people do it all the time. They just download the lastest WM5 firmware from Samsung's site. I don't know which done they get. But I know there is an update on there too.

So I don't know if they download JUST the update, or the latest FIRMWARE and the UPDATE.

The update might not work if your on WM6, so the old FIRMWARE might have to be done first, then update it.

Yes, my BJ was in flash mode... The updater's "Start" button is greyed-out if the phone is not ready. I am seeing all "0" (zeroes) before the flash, like the phone is not being read or seen properly, though...

I'm kind of feeling like a m0r0n for not being able to get the ROM update to flash

As to the video share, its not showing as one of the devices, but there is a link on wireless att site that explains the service they are going to offer...the ability to share video while in a phone call.

I installed it and my battery started to get hot and it was draining a fully charged battery within an hour without using it.

I loved it. I fixed the limit on ringtones and I had it they way I wanted, but
the battery getting hot I had to get rid of it, so I flashed the rebrand rom from samsung's website.

One thing I found out last night, at a bar, is that I cannot add create a new contact. wtf.

I tried to get the number of a buddy I met last night, he gave me his number and I went to save it, and it just goes back to the dial screen, not saving the number. I had to add his number to an exsisting contact.

Even today, and sober, I'm trying and I can't do it. I can't seem to make a new contact at all. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't wanna hardreset the thing because I just set it up right. I just want to know if its a bug, or is a hardreset will fix it. maybe I messed something up screwing with the registry.

Well I leaped and did a reset. Tested, yup adding contacts works. So I just gotta be careful.

I don't think AT&T ever had any intentions of releasing Mobile 6 for the BJ before the 8 weeks they said it would probably take to test it and finalize it after they got it from Microsoft in late May. I then spoke with 2 different stores, including one store manager who said in mid-june that it was going to take an extra month or two from their earlier time frame, so from late July to Late August or the end of September. Even if he was wrong and it was going to be a month or two longer from the date he was advised in mid June, that would put it from mid July to mid August. Again, I don't think they ever expected it out before this week (8 weeks from getting it in Late May), and with the iPhone mess it sounds as if its going to be at least 2 weeks delay. I just would not expect it before the week of Aug. 6th, or Aug 13th, but I hope its sooner! Who knows maybe tomorrow, ...........................nah!

well i heard from a pretty good source that the bj is going to be replaced in november with some other samsung data device, they didn't know what it was going to be though. they told me that wm6 would be released in late aug. if they do at all.

I think that this link to Engadget mobile might be something like what you were thinking about. Looks like it could be a pretty sweet little device. One other thing, ATT opened up video share to the nation today. So hopefully WM6 isn't too far behind for us.

Sliders are usually really thick, and for this thing being so short... it'll feel like a rounded cube or a ball. Imagine the reaction from walking around with this big "ball" in your pocket. I think they should make a bluetooth headset the size of a roll of quarters to complete the job.
