Blackjack WM6 update on At&t forums!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: player911

Its ok, its still funny the second time around.

I just wanted to post real quick saying I got WM6 pretty sturdy. I found that any type of backup program will screw things up.

I used Sprite, and used my full backup from Wm5 on Wm6... this caused lots of headaches. "Settings" menu is hosed, unable to open" and the end button stopped working. Also the Power button no longer opened the quick menu.

So I hard reset it. This time only doing the Personal Database option from Sprite, which is contacts, messages, etc. Seemed to work, but later found that I couldn't add anyone to the contact list. Bummer. This time I backed it up via Activesync.

So I hard reset it again. This time setting up activesync (via bluetooth) and getting my contacts that way. To date I haven't had any problems. I manually set up ALL my apps and carefully cleaned up the start menu (normally I just delete the start menu and copy a backed up copy from my SD card with all my folders and shortcuts).

For about 2 weeks I haven't had ANY issues. So may this be a red flag to those with problems and lets see if its a common backup that is causing most of our issues.

what about the end call button...any stickyness with that. once a day i still need to hang up by removing the battery, because the end button wont hang up....arghhhh

So when the heck is WM6 officially coming out for the Blackjack?

Those who don't know are speculating, those who DO know are tight lipped.

Posted by: shizat63

So I couldn't resist the WM6 update. Everything went perfect, so far it's working flawlessly. I followed Samsung's instructions religiously:

http://erms.samsungusa.com/customer...558&PROD_ID=751

EDIT - I used ActiveSync 4.5, and I cleared the rom + reset it to factory defaults before the WM6 update.

The only issue is with the Don'tForget app. Otherwise I can't find any problems, yet.........

Posted by: Kevad007

"Those who don't know are speculating, those who DO know are tight lipped."

Both AT&T as well as Samsung know that it was widely reported that they would get the final version of Mobile 6 from Microsoft the last week of May and that it would take approximately 8 weeks of testing before they could release it. I have been told that in June AT&T sent out word that due to issues found with Mobile 6 and some debate with Samsung as to what to fix, what to add, what to modify and how, that their initial 8 week estimate was being pushed back a month or two. IF THAT IS TRUE, and right now they both know its going to be many weeks from now, then for goodness sakes their PR people should let us good customers know. Why be so tight lipped when they already let it out that it would take 8 weeks, and now that came and went on Monday. So update us, keep us informed, show some effort to let us know, if they have legitimate reasons for delay, maybe they are adding in a few last minute modifications, or new features and testing is taking longer, then let us know. There is nothing to be gained by them by being so tight lipped. They can rationalize all they want about oh if we say this and don't meet it people MAY get mad. Well, guess what the course of action you are currently taking is ALREADY got many people frustrated, upset, mad, let down, and your credibility is already going down the tube, why not restore some faith and treat us loyal customers with some repect and issue a press release with a target release date and explain a bit what is going on, or the progress. OH and I am telling ya, if they take out Internet Sharing, BIG MISTAKE, you do not issue an upgrade giving people 10 new things and pull out 2 or 3 items we already have. AT&T has to stop being so greedy, so calculating of what they can get away with to hoard their data pipe and seemingly bring in the most cash flow they can gouge from us, or justify by saying hey, Verizon this or TMobile that. Customer Loyalty will make you the most money AT&T/Samsung, why not start showing it now. Release Mobile 6 NOW or explain why its past 8 weeks and when/why we can expect it at what future time. And don't even try to justify taking out things like Internet Sharing because we have to protect the integrity of 3G for the Masses. You want to do it for your own good, disregarding the customers needs and fact that some of these key features in Mobile 5 are motivating factors of why we went with the BJ and CIngular in the first place. Take those away and you take away any reason many of us have to remain loyal to you. ARE YOU LISTENING. DO YOU CARE? YOU BETTER!

Maybe I don't make enough phone calls, or perhaps I don't have an issue at all. I DO know that it has happened to me before when I first installed the update. Of course I used Sprite backup which caused several errors.

I remember it occurred when I hit the end call button several times while ending a call. A result that required a battery pull.

Since then I've reset the device several times because I goof up a reg hack or something (i'm doing alot of testing). I got the device exactly the way I want it and I set it all up completely manual. The only thing I installed was a couple games and Windows Live.

Outta sight, outta mind... but once I remembered I recognized that the end call button hasn't screwed up since the past couple resets.

A good test would be someone WITH the problem... reset and use it normally for several days without installing anything. Notice your habits. Do you frantically press the end call button until your back at your homescreen, or do you just press it once and be done?

I suspect that there's something we're bringing over from WM5 that is causing it. The only thing I got from WM5 was my contact list.

man when is this going to be released I want my Video Share! LOL

HELP. I got same case as DABADIE earlier. Mine stopped downlowading, accidentaly tripped on USB cable and now it is fried.

If I go to Reflashing mode, the Upgrader cannot recognize the USB anymore. The screen on BJ stays:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
*USB Downloader -Xcingular v1.2

[Phone] Active OFF
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I had reformat it using (power+UP key), it is reformatted bu nothing works on reflashing mode. Tried 2 different PC. Same. What to do?

Desperately need help here. thanks much.

Posted by: player911

Your phone works. It downloads the firmware before it installs it. If your phone works then you should be ok.

If your phone doesn't see it properly then calm down and recheck your steps. Sounds like a driver issue. Make sure your selecting your phone as a Modem in the USB CONNECTIONS setup menu. Perhaps your freaking out and overlooking some important steps. Your best bet is to visit the samsung website, and DO everything on that site (regardless if you've already done it).

Run the Modem Driver Setup, plug in the phone, let it do its thing, power cycle, select usb as a modem, connect, let the pc do its thing and find the drivers, start the program and let it do its thing.

If your freaking out, just put it down and walk away. Come back and do it again in an hour.

Posted by: amazemeid

The phone does not work. If reboot as normal, it stucks on the blue screen "Windows Mobile". I think dabadie experienced same. Hence I am interested how he managed bring the phone back?

thanks for the tips, you probably right I might missed some steps. OK. I will do the Samsung web steps one more time. no panick this time...

Posted by: dabadie

hi
I fixed it
I was under 30 days and they sent me a new one

Posted by: huydnguyen

In pulled the trigger and installed the WM6 Rom over the weekend. The UI looks decent and so far all my apps work. I don't tether that much with internet sharing but wonder. Does the DASH have internet sharing can the files for internet sharing be copied from the DASH to the Blackjacks WM6? or can we pull the files from the Blackjack WM5 rom to enable internet sharing?

Posted by: player911

Its extremely possible to get it working, no one has figured it out yet, thats all. It'll happen one day, whether MS, Samsung, or AT&T fix it or if someone in the community figures it out first.

I think there are registry edits that need to be duplicated as well, since its connecting through USB or bluetooth. It just requires looking into several WM6 releases and finding the differences.

Does ANY WM6 release have ICS? If its left out entirely across the board, then thats a different issue. If its only left out on the WM6 blackjack release, then it just needs to be put back in.

Posted by: MDIFILM

well at att forum, there is alread officially out for netherlands and russian on the wm6 for the i600 version of the blackjack... so i think the official one will come out soon for our version of the blackjack (the i607)

Posted by: areinike

Would be nice to get the "certified version." I'm not sure if AT&T is doing something now or what, but with i607UCGD2, I wasn't able to connect to Media.net or any internet site for that matter. Reflashed back to 5 and I'm connecting no problem. Could it be possible that AT&T can block connections with "hacked" phones?

Posted by: Da_G

Taking a peak through the source on that i600 WM6 release for netherlands/russia, most other countries state "The county is preparing for this service.", but belgium, france, italy, and portugal all say "Previewed date of beginning: 1 september 2007." or "The opening is envisaged on September 1, 2007." or "According to planning the opening takes place on 1 September 2007." thanks to a poor babelfish translation, depending on what language you translate..

So there's at least one hard date (although it's not for a US release)

Lucky you. OK, I'll do the same returning the phone and claim "damaged". So, you're staying with WM5 now or WM6?

No they cant, you just need to reconfigure the settings again...if you reflash with WM6, I'll help you get the settings back up again if you like, areinike

I have had wm6 now for 3 days and find nothing wrong with it. It seems to run faster than wm5 and it looks better. All my internet stuff works.

you're telling me?! Im just so pissed off because most ppl are having great luck with the beta, but whenever I install it the "H" (HSDPA?) indicator stays on and kills the battery.

Posted by: MDIFILM

well, for me the sms key doesn't work, and fn key doesn't work and no internet sharing option that is easy for setup so I went back to wm5 and had no problem so far. I'll just have to wait till the official release and decide then. I do have all the files here at home so I can easily install it anytime.

Since I have my self-made home screen, I'm quite content with wm5.

I wonder if they will put the carousel app on the upgrade? It would definetly be some eye candy that may draw some attention away from the iphone.

My "H" symbol comes on only when I'm accessing the internet. Regular usage displays a 3G. If I open up a browser or some data usage program, it'll turn to an H.

Perhaps your leaving some programs open in the background that are constantly pulling data. The "H" only shows up when I send or receive. With a webpage open and finished loading, it'll go back to 3G. If I click a link, it'll change to "H".

I noticed this too in Wm6. I always assumed it was HSDPA.

Posted by: player911

The only thing WM6 lacks is ICS and the ability to press and hold keys for their symbols (which might just need a reg hack).

Everything else is great. Just forget about restoring backups. Manually setup EVERYTHING. I only sync'd my contacts over from Activesync. Its been running like a champ since (almost a month). I don't even get the unresponsive end key after I set everything up manually.

Posted by: nvisi0n

Give up love2hum, they could care less about us. And they will be painfully aware of that when the year is up and they lose 5 lines. Trust me I would be happier with EDGE and T-Mobile's CS then HSDPA and AT&T right now.

When we upgrade the firmware, everything comes in one package.

Cingular#1... yes this is very much possible using WM5. Check for walkthroughs here on Hofo.

Me too 911, things have been running great! I do miss the ICS though, and look forward to it being in the ATT update when they are ready...

ok, so that im up to par with everyone...who has dl from my server and still having issues updating to WM6? between 911 and I, we should be able to get your answers for you....there shouldnt be any "it works for some, not for others", as the hardware is the same, and its being wiped clean for the update...more than likely, any problems will come from: 1) missing a step in in load mode, and 2) from software running that isnt quite in hand with the WM6 update.

No I will not PM or email it to you because you are lazy. The link is right here in this thread. Posted by me in post #369. I just found it so can you!

I figured that was coming! I had a guy ask me the same question regarding the T750 WM6 File. I gave the same response , then sent it anyway , kinda like you nvision. Just hoping for some reciprocity, and looks like you abliged. Gracias!

Oh BTW , I see you are new here to HOFO. Let me first start out by saying , welcome! I promise after you have been here a while and get a little lazy , "like we all do" I will show you the same hospitality!

As far as I know Voice Dial is not available on the BJ either in WM5 or WM6. however there is 3rd party apps that will avail you.

Internet Connection Sharing was left out of the unofficial WM6 release. So if this is a big concern... then wait until its officially released and hope they include it.

No Voice Command came with my WM6(I thought it was supposed to), but I allready had a copy so it was no problem. Although I can't get "announce calls" to work. with or without a ringtone.

Can you initiate calls from BT headsets now? (BJ+WM5 didn't work)

Sorry for my PMS it was early on a beautiful Saturday and I was getting ready for effing work.

Got up this morning to find some "Fatal Error" message on the screen after leaving on charger all night; but I haven"t noticed any ill effects of any kind. I initially had the "hot" battery, but did a hard reset and havent experienced it since, battery life seems on par with WM5. Except for the pretty screen and faster menu speeds, I haven't noticed a lot of changes.

Hey no problem. Its an early Beatiful Sunday morning and I'm at work. I know how ya feel!

Posted by: gsxr800

It all started yesterday. I had wm6 on the phone for about a week. went out and my seadoo and had the phone in a waterproof box. stopped to make a call and noticed the battery cover had popped off and the battery was out. I put the battery back in and I think it all started there. Got back to the truck and noticed the phone was very warm and the battery was almost dead. got home and put on the extended battery for the night and the phone was still very warm. I had no problems making calls and sending text messages. What I was unaware was that I was not receiving any of my incoming text messages. I was waiting for someone to reply to a text and did not get any of the 4 sent to me until 2:00 am this morning along with a fatal error message from the phone and to call samsung about the issue. At that time the phone was no longer warm. Even at this time the phone seems to be back to normal.

Sorry for the long post but I hope this helps in some way figure out what this could be. A lot of people have been complaining about the hot phone issue after the wm6 upgrade.

Yeah I was able to download that file in 2 min from the link above.

Posted by: d2burke

[QUOTE=ARHYTHMATIK]Here is what I did to get it going.

1) download the file
2) turn your phone off
3) plug your phone into your computer while it is off
4) run the program
5) put your phone in flash mode (hold the side "back" key, the right soft key, and press the power button all at the same time)
6) your computer will recognize the device
7) ActiveSync popped up saying it couldn't connect-- click "do not connect through USB" (or something to that effect)
8) press start
9) let it install and BINGO, you're done

Here are some initial differences I've already noticed
1) yes, the typing problem seems to have been solved. it doesn't skip letters like it did before
2) yes, holding a key down to get it's alternative symbol is now gone
3) graphic icons for email accounts are much better and clearer to see (i.e the icons next to email accounts etc.)
4) new homescreens to choose from
5) in the email program, "delete" is the left soft key, not "new"
6) you can now get MobiTV and TeleNav and options to do so are all over the phone
7) built in Calendar is a little different

Those are the first changes I've noticed (besides obvious ones, such as the prescence of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, etc.)[/QUOTE

Ive done all these steps and it won't work for me...and I don't have mcaffe...what could I be doing wrong? It keeps saying "PDA device not found"

Posted by: N7TND

You can also invite attendees to meetings using Pocket Outlook.

I have also noticed that the phone is in "3g" mode for voice calls and switches to "H" (HSDPA) when I go to data. Probably did that under V5 also but the indications didn't state so.

OR - Win 5 did not switch and 6 does which would improve battery life....

Posted by: player911

Sounds like you don't have the phone in Modem mode, which is missing from those steps listed above. You have to set the phone to modem mode, then plug it in, then install the Samsung Modem Drivers before the flash program will see the phone.

Posted by: d2burke

Are all of the steps for that on the Samsung Site? I would assume so...

Posted by: d2burke

sweet...that fixed it! Thanks player

Does anyone know of a newer version?

No thats it for now for the leaked WM6 for BJ...but you know there is someone that is lurking about that works with Samsung that googles and reads all this, that is just dying to tell us something....hehehee

ok on another note, and I apologize before hand as this isnt really WM6: (well maybe a little) ive got push email thru exchange server to my BJ, so why is it that in the configure server source, and on the email settings cant change the message format from text to html? I can change how much to download, what size, with or with out attachments, but the Message Format is grayed out with it stuck on text....any ideas anyone?

Exchange 2007 is required for HTML email in WM6. Are you running Exchange 2007?

Actually...I have html email working on my BJ WM6 and I don't have Ex 2007...I was very surprised to see it, and I have to ask it to download the entire msg, but it works

I was referring to users of Direct Push and Exchange. HTML email will work with other messaging systems (hotmail) but if your using Direct Push with Exchange, it has to be Exchange 2007 to get HTML email.

If you are using Direct Push with Exchange 2003 and get HTML email, I would love to hear how you are doing it.

Thanks Netronin: Thats what I was looking for. My Hosting company for my domain is using exchange but obviously not ex 2007. I may have to go shop somewhere else to get my exchange mail.

Installed WM6 and the installation itself went fine. I couldn't get ActiveSync (v4.5) to work though... it would start synchronizing the contacts and would hang there, and then an error message showed on the Blackjack about some kind of unrecoverable application error. I tried blowing away all the ActiveSync settings on the PC with no luck. This was after a hard reset on the BJ of course.

I put WM5 back on and ActiveSync worked without a hitch. I guess I'll wait on the official release unless I run across a solution to the ActiveSync issue.

Works fine on my office PC with AS 4.5 (Build 5096) running XP.

I had to reinstall active sync and reconnect, as it did that for me a few times as well...but after the initial reinstall, it has gone well..maybe you can try the same

Posted by: jayiw

I'd hate to be the negative one but I am really being 'real' regarding this... Does anyone have the same feeling as me that the WM6 final release for the BJ may be scrapped? I just cannot see something being developed for something that is being discontinued shortly. In a month or two there is supposed to be 'new' Blackjack or a successor, and in addition within a month we have a couple of new landscape WM6 qwerty phones coming out for AT&T. I hope this is not the case but I just can't see why they would bother at this point.

The only reason I doubt that will happen is they have told their business customers that this is coming. It's been stated many times to us as one of the two devices guaranteed to be upgraded. That's not to say they couldn't go back on their word.... just would be odd.

I agree. I have a business plan as well, and the word to me has been that it WILL be coming out, that there are some issues in regards the video sharing...

on another note, anyone know of someone wanting to sell their european version of the bj?

thanks, Dan

Posted by: player911

The unofficial one works great. Why would they scrap something that works perfectly?

The new Samsung phone isn't the "Blackjack 2" but rather just a different form factor. Its a slider, but I don't think it offers anything over the i607, aside maybe a slightly bigger screen.

The thing is that its a simple upgrade and it'll really help sales. The software is there, the need is there... they just got to put 1 + 1 together. It'll happen. If not, no big deal, its unofficially released and works great. We'll just have to hack ICS and it'll be golden.

Restart your phone.

Posted by: rakeyoung

funny, mine was working after the first boot.

but i must say, wm6 is great looking, and office mobile is very handy, but PIE runs kinda slower.

and can someone please tell me how to change the homepage, i tried changing the value in the registry but it didnt work, maybe i did it wrong.

Posted by: player911

There are regedits you can do to change this. The homepage is in the Windows folder. I tried deleting it or something but its part of the rom (I was trying to edit so it would have a google search also)

I know you can do this via regedits because I've done them in the past. There is also a cab file that will automatically set this up. I know its a pain. I can't believe MS would disallow someone to change the homepage. Stupid.

I'm sure if you looked hard enough you'd find the answer. Remember that regedits require the phone be appunlocked first. Have you power cycled the device and double checked your configurations? They may have defaulted back to the original setting.

Check it out and let us know.

I've been reading through many posts in this thread as well as other forums and I'm still unclear on one thing.

Once I flash to WM6, how can I flash back to WM5 in case I don't like it?

Thanks,

Use the AT&T update on the Samsung site. Piece of cake!

Posted by: Mizzle51

Word from Microsoft is Q4 2007. Its up to AT&T to push it.

Posted by: nismo280zx

LOL AT&T has to do their lil tweaks to it, I hope they leave in internet sharing however, with the way things have been going I wouldnt be supprised if they made it have a special unlock code, only available to tethering subcscribers, oh well Im sticking with wm6 until i upgrade my dad's blackjack and see how buggy it is lol, its nice having another blackjack as the experiment phone.

It's kinda buggy

Internet Connection Sharing

End Button

Hold Down for alternate key doesn't work.

Phone is still pretty usable...but its buggy.

What do you mean by, "End Button."

Posted by: luv2hum

the button nyou press to hang up the call sometimes does not work, and if you have to remove the battery to hang up or wait until the guy on the other end hangs up. a problem not common with wm 5 but is common with wm6

Sometimes the End button will just stop working. I have had it happen a few times, and in order to fix it had to reboot the phone using the power button. I don't want to jinx it but I haven't had the problem now in a few weeks. Don't know if I'm doing something different.

I have to reboot every 3 days or so to clear out the leaking memory.

All that aside, short of the phone just not working anymore, I will not be going back to WM5.

Are you saying this is a problem common among all WM6 phones?

Posted by: iJITSU

it's specific to the AT&T blackjack ROM this thread is about. That same issue is why I loaded WM5 back onto my blackjack.

Ok guys that are running, WM6: I was using an exchange server to push my mail to my phone, and it required me to create a password for me when i booted my phone up..now that ive removed that server from my phone the device lock is still on - heres the question: when I go into settings->security->device lock-> and enter my pw, the checkbox for "prompt if device unused for" is greyed out. any ways to turn this off?

by the way, ive not had any issues with my phone for almost a month now...but i cant wait for at&t to release the off ver

That sucks.

Try setting up a bogus exchange server using bogus settings. See if you can disable it through the setup and try tricking it that way. If not I would hard reset if it continues to be a problem. I've never done that, but when does it ask you for a password... every time you power on, or when the device is idle? How often does it prompt you for a password?

During Initial testing of Wm6 on the blackjack and screwing it up beyond usability, I found that if you hard reset the device a couple times, I no longer have the End Button bug any more.

I have had it in the past during the first few days of testing, but I know I hard reset the thing like 5 times and I haven't had it stop working in over 2 months.

Another thing is that I only sync'd up my Contacts, and performed NO Backup Restore. I manually reinstalled all my software. Aside from my Contacts (activesync) I set it up like a new phone and its worked perfect ever since.

The FN key requirement is a big change, but you get used to it. I REALLY DO WISH for that to be figured out soon though. I'm sure its just a registry edit. Prolly in the same location as the slow Keyboard repeat setting. If you press and hold a button, like Period (.), or space, or arrow keys... the keyboard cursor moves slowly. This is also a reg edit setting. Again i'm sure both hacks are prolly in the same relative location in the registry and are just values we need to set.

Internet Connection Sharing, or lack thereof, sucks too. Once you use it on WM5 you know how nice and easy it is to setup. Although I don't use it often, I'm out of town right now where my WiFi connection is sucky at best. I get great 3G signal and really wish my WM6 blackjack had ICS.

Thanks player: whenever I power up it asks for a password, and Ive set up a new ex account, and its still greyed out...the settings are for pw every 24 hours...im going to try to delete the server settings and reboot and see what becomes of that, if not, then ill just hard reset and start over...

as for the hot battery issue, yeah it is hot but all in all its still good..

Hi All - I've searched and scoured - can anyone with WM6 installed report if there's been any improvements regarding A2DP quality?

Specifically does a registry key exist for:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2 dp\Settings

Thx in advance!

Is there a way to dual boot a phone so I can keep wm5 in case I don't like the leaked version of wm6? It would be cool.

There has been a beta update since the leaked version and the final build has been sent to AT&T from Sammy is in testing at this very moment. ICS and Video Share are in the final build per AT&T's request. Testing should not take much longer. I have my fingers crossed.

Posted by: kneustadt

Hi there, longtime lurker, first time poster here. I finally relented and installed WM6 on my BJ yesterday and almost everything seems to work flawlessly. I haven't run into the hot battery and some of the other issues I've read about. My primary reason to upgrade was a hope that it would fix the bluetooth stack so I could pair with the BT in my 2007 BMW (not iDrive system).

It paired perfectly with my car on the first try and I used it for about 45 min. It even read my address book (others have complained of this as well). But after that successful 1st time, nothing. I've deleted the pairing, and tried re-pairing and nothing. Any thoughts beside a hard reset of my BJ?

Also, how do I know I've got the most recent WM6 flashed since I now here rumors that there's a beta to the original leaked version?

Thanks for all you help and previous posts. Great place for info.

Me either, but that's probably because that update listed is for Windows Mobile 5 and the one we installed is Windows Mobile 6.

Just for comparison, my PDA version is i607ICGD2 and my Phone version is i607UCFJE

Yeah, I was. As for overclocking, it's when you increase the speed of the processor in the device. I wouldn't recommend it if you're a "novice" user. Hell, I don't even bother anymore, I couldn't tell the difference. If you're interested in it, click my name above my post and click view profile information. I put a few interesting links in my signature. You can view them from there.

Well, I got WM6 loaded and it seems to be working fine. The only app I appear to be having trouble with is Vista Smartphone Interface. It keeps causing memory dumps, woohoo. I'm going to email the developer and see if there is a new beta. What have you overclocked your BJ to? I'm at 240MHz. Seems pretty stable.

WM6 doesn't seem to like one of my home made home screens. It'll load it the first time, but then after a while I'll go into something else and when I come back, there's an error loading it.

The lack of holding a key to get the alternate character will take some getting used to, but not a total deal breaker yet. I noticed that my d/l speeds seem slower from the DSLreports mspeed test. I used to get close to a 1Mb, not I'm in the 600Kb range.

3) OMAP Clock for overclocking your phone
4)regeditor that works like a champ

Yeah Ive emailed the developer, and no new version, I feel like a feel a fool for buying the vista smartphone interface, when its not even a solid app yet.

Ive got mine clocked at 240 as well and is working good, the home screen issue i have had problems with as well.

Ive noticed slower speeds as well, but the DNS server change I made seems to resolve a bit faster (I'm using OpenDNS)

Posted by: jk5598224

Are we all here in this thread just Tech Geeks (I am) that like to have the latest and greatest? Truthfully not a lot of difference I can see between WM5 and WM6 expect for HTML email that I can see, which only a limited number of users can take advantage.

Oh well count me in waiting and waiting to have the latest and 'greatest'...

Hopefully Samsung/AT&T will release it, albeit I don't see the incentive for them unless it reduces support calls and costs...

Posted by: treefrog

I will say the biggest and best improvement from WM5 to WM6 is the phone will actually keep up with me typing text messages now. That, in itself, was the one main reason I took the plunge.

I've been using it for about a week and a half and haven't had any problems at all. Speed is better, but I am, of course, overclocked to 252. I know some people can't tell the difference, but I surely can. It just seems to draw the screen faster.

Oh, and one other bonus I haven't seen anyone mention... Cellular (Cingular) Video now plays full screen! I just ran across that gem the other day.

Now, if Samsung will just get their freakin BT stack improved (so the phone doesn't slow to a crawl listening to music), this will be just about perfect.

For the record, the only third party apps I run are Fizz Weather, Facade, OMAPClock, SLiClock (well and XpressMail, if you count that). I have toyed a little with PocketPlayer (just because I want some freakin EQ and replay gain settings when listening to music), but it almost has too many features for this poor little underpowered processor. All the nifty DSP settings just bring this to a crawl, so I'm still limping along with WMP.

EDIT: One little issue with WMP on WM6... I notice sometimes that WMP gets stuck in some kind of "refresh" loop in the library when starting. I can't seem to figure out what conditions cause this, but frustrating. You try to scroll down to select a playlist and the screen refreshes before you can even get down the list... so your highlighted item is back at the top again. I have tried a hard reset after I noticed this the first time, but it doesn't fix it. Most of the time ending the task and restarting also doesn't fix it. The only way around it is to just browse "My Stuff" and click on the actual playlist file. I would consider this one major for anyone that uses the library very extensively.

What is SLiclock? I haven't heard of that one.

The developer for VSI emailed me back saying that he expects to have version 2.0 out by the end of August. He also mentions that version 1.75 is working on 3 different WM6 devices that he has right now. Maybe it's because the ROM is in Beta. Guess we won't know till Ver 2.0 comes out or the "official" WM6 ROM for BJ.

Just a simple freeware plugin for putting an analog clock on the homescreen. Nice because of the positioning options and light footprint (I'm big on simple programs that do only one thing and do it well... I hate bloatware).

Posted by: The Champ

Is overclocking the phone safe? If so at what speeds?

Posted by: IndyMCSE

I've had my BJ overclocked to 240MHz pretty much since I got it and haven't seen any ill effect. In the short term, overclocking should be ok. It's the long term you have to worry about. Overclocking "usually" produces a little more heat which can shorten the life of the hardware, but I haven't noticed any more heat from my battery or anything since overclocking my BJ.

Does anyone know of any automatic key lock progs that work on WM6? I've been using the free one from BlackJackSmartZone, but that gives me a keyboard hook error and doesn't work right.

I don't know anyone who is assumimg this update will come from samsung. As with past updates for the blackjack, if this is ever released it will be from cingular. Hence, the reason it has taken months to put it up after it has been given to them.

If the Mobile 6 upgrade is coming from Cingular we may have a very long wait indeed, given they don't exist anymore. However, maybe the New AT&T will get in trouble with the Govt. again, will be broken up, and someday we will start up our phones on "The New Cingular"

But seriously, the only update for the Blackjack is posted on the Samsung site, it mainly fixed an International roaming issue.

Ok, have I missed it somewhere in this thread? I've been running WM6 since Friday evening and just noticed that my Media Net and Cellular Video don't work. Cellular Video says that the page can't be loaded. Media Net says that my internet isn't set up properly. Any help please?

Posted by: IndyMCSE

Ok, I got it working. Had to turn off the "Automatically detect settings" in the PIE options.

Posted by: Airik

My mistake. I guess I've been the one making the wrong assumption. The only ROM I've downloaded for the BJ was the leaked one fron fourms.cingular.com so I assumed it would be coming from AT&T with all the AT&T branding and apps installed. I'm using mine with T-mobile so I'd strip as much of that away anyhow. Thanks for the clarification.

Sorry for the stupid question but how do I back up my contacts so that it does not wipe them out after the upgrade? I figure to use active sync but how should I back up only my phone contacts and not mess with all of my outlook email contacts? Once I accidently added my computer contacts and add a lot names and numbers I did not want in my phone. I had to go through and removes dupes and other names I did not want on there. Big hassle

I know how to reload my homescreens but is there anything else I should worry about?

I am going to finally try this upgrade because my phone reception over the last 6 weeks is going to crap and something is going on. I drop calls all day long and I'm not happy. I hope this will help.

Thanks in advance.

Posted by: player911

back up your contacts via activesync. Then after you flash, sync again and it'll put your contacts back in there.

When I upgraded I only synced my contacts, and I haven't had any problems.

Guys,
could you please point me to the link to download WM6 for Samsung Blackjack
Thanks!

Posted by: IndyMCSE

I found one more quirk that I don't like about WM6 so far yesterday. I noticed that if I miss a call or get a text message, the right soft key no longer changes to call history or messages like it used to. Does anyone know how to fix this?

There are a whole bunch of them in this thread, try a page or 2 back.

i really wouldnt give a **** if we dont get WM6 of course i want it but i like WM5 on the blackjack....switching from a PPC to a smartphone is way different then a PPC

To a certain extent I think many agree that WM6 is lacking in adding much to the day to day usefulness of the BJ but it may include some long overdue bug fixes. It does have an Auto Update feature for the Mobile 6, if I were Microsoft I'd be working on some updates fast to stop all this talk about how under whelming it really is (mobile 5.2 is a better name). Still I do wish it to come out ASAP with perhaps some Firmware fixes. I think it will be out very soon now, it will help out a bit, but I cannot see its availability being any factor against the apparent AT&T crises concern of protecting iPhone sales at any cost or consequence. WM6 does not change my position at all, I still have no interest in the iPhone until it has 3G, Full Exchange interoperation, and a way to get it about $150 cheaper. AT&T, it is time, Let us BJ owners have WM6 and be done with it already, Geeeez!

I think that its interesting that MS would be offering Windows update for WM devices. Will AT&T have to approve the bug fixes/security patches or will they just come down straight from the big M$? Certainly it would be a loss for the carriers if some aspect of control was lost to the application vendor.

Posted by: Kevad007

The Windows Mobile Updater feature in Mobile 6 (access via phone settings menu) appears to get updates straight from Microsoft, but I think you are right, there must be some interaction with each carrier and some control, as they probably need to make sure that phone operations, phone functioning and phone performance are not affected nor that changes interfere with carrier added applications such as Video Sharing. But this capability is not really any different than what Apple apparently has for updates on the iPhone. Also, it appears that Samsung will issue the new ROM with Mobile 6, but it sure has tested and approved by AT&T first (where we assume it is now days away from flying free). So far since early June it has checked I think daily and sadly no updates have come forth from the mighty Microsoft. However, seeing that it is a leaked version of Mobile 6 on the BJ, and no final version exists, its really understandable why they have not updated it.

As soon as we get the final BJ version and see what its got, and not, we can start threads, "What should Microsoft Update Soon in Mobile 6"

UPDATE: Now anybody that has been following this thread knows that I have had "zero" luck with the leaked update (continious hot battery, stuck end key issues) I did an XBM on my BJ and now I have an AT&T branded set and right out of the box everything seems to be going well, I tried about 50 calls to 611 so far and have no stuck end key and the phone has been on for about 2 hours or so and the battery is as cool as the other side of the pillow. Is this because this is an ATT branded set? Wish me lots of luck and a nice cool battery!

Anyone know if gmail java version works on WM6 on the BJ?

So if I understand correctly, you returned an otherwise perfectly functional Blackjack because you were having problems operating a leaked ROM with it. Thanks for driving up the cost of doing business with them for everybody else

Posted by: nvisi0n

No, but thank you for your assumption. NOWHERE in that post did it say that I did an XBM because of problems with the leaked ROM. I was having problems with dropped calls. You know what happens when you assume don't you?

no joy with the stock JRE on the ROM. It continually asks if you want to allow the outbound connections. There doesn't seem to be a way to fix this from the registry. There may be some voodoo in the files on the phone itself but i don't know them.

I haven't tried the IBM java, but I never had any luck with it in the first place. The softkeys did not work in WM5. very frustrating.

personally, i'm popping my gmail, but it would be nice to have the option to go in and mark certain things as spam, or star conversations, etc.

hope that helps.

Let's go WM6!

It works like a champ (the IBM version). Go back a few pages and find my server with the apps, dl the zip file for the IBM...any problems let me know...

Just curious, why do you use express mail instead of the built in client? I had nothing but trouble from expressmail.

mr_c0w would you by any MIRACULOUS chance have the settings for the built in client? I too have grown weary fooling with xpress mail, and it's utter failure to push email!

Does the built in client push your email? I will say this for xpress mail, even though it doesn't push, I can retrieve my mail whenever, wherever.

I had wm6 installed for about a week and then I got the hot phone issue and my incoming text messaging stopped and battery was depleting quickly. At some point in the night on the day it started giving me problems the phone cooled down and I got all my text messages for that day at 2 in the morning!!!

There IS a way to run the update over Vista and there is a link to the proper drivers in this thread somewhere. I have used them myself in the past and they do work.

i think the WMP included in the ROM does a media refresh/search on each WMP load. Depending on how much storage you have in your phone this could take a while, but eventually stops. i found it annoying as well.

Coreplayer is the best out there. Will play almost any file type you throw at it.

I am looking for the download for version i607UCFJE before I upgrade to wm6 just in case I dont like it. I know about the samsung download but that is the newer rebranded ROM and I would rather have the option to go back to the original cingular ver above.

Posted by: Wide_opeN

If I wanted to try out wm6 on my BJ, would I be able to go back to what I had via a SPRITE backup?

Question may be novice, but I still need a FOR SURE answer!

Thanx!!!

Seriously... the summer is almost over. When is at&t going to release the final version of the WM6 to their customers?! I want it NOW! Anyone know how long the wait is for the final ROM?

Ok, let me make sure I understand you. Firstly, you're saying no to the fact that I can't use a Sprite backup to go back to wm5 and my settings... right?

Secondly, let me ask this: if I upgrade or change over to wm6 and use the rom to go back to wm5 THEN can I use my sprite backup to get wm5 back to the way I previously had it before going to wm6?

Long story short, I want to satisfy my curiosity and try wm6 but have a safeguard in place I don't like wm6.

Thanx in advance!

No, this is not possible.

Has anyone notices that SKTools reports this WM6 ROM as OS 5.2.1235.3?

Why not are you saying that NO ONE ever downloaded the original ROM from the Samsung site before they posted the Rebranded one. I also wouldnt doubt the Samsung FTP somewhere still has it. I have searched and couldnt find it but that doesnt mean that someone didnt download the exe and on time.

Think this through for a second: Why would there be an update application that has the original ROM version on it? This is the base ROM that the earliest (production) Blackjacks shipped with. Sure, there might have been internal testing Blackjacks at Samsung or Cingular that had even earlier ROMs, but you don't normally see leaks of pre-production software since it's so easy to track back to the leaker.

Bottom line: Unit shipped with Cingular ROM on it (No update produced), there was an AT&T WM5 update and now a pre-release WM6 update. You can run either of those versions at will, but if you upgrade you can kiss your Cingular WM5 goodbye forever.

HTC puts the original ROMs on their website so I did think about it. Usually the current OFFICIAL ROM is on the manufacture website. So I figured the official orinigal ROM was on Samsung website at one time.
