Blackjack WM6 update on At&t forums!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: txcaesar

ok, I have a question: what is the file name for the startup splash screen for the BJ? it is a .bin file I know, and I want to create a custom bin file for the start up like they have done with the verizon phones...

Can we close this thread as it is completely off topic?

Posted by: pgens

How is it off topic? It is in the PDA/Smartphone forum.

Besides, this is where the first alerts for download locations will likely be and those with thread subscriptions will get the word that way.

Well he does have a point, it is about about WM6 updates....I'll be on the level here: I wanted to post the question here as I felt comfortable with the posters on this site to respond. I'll start another thread; first time for everything :-

Its pretty off topic! The OP and title was WM6 on September 16th, now it is WM6 Beta tips and techniquies...

If you are using the WM6 beta you can follow the Samsung FAQ Installation Instructions line by line and it will work.

Posted by: cypher_OS

Well D-Day is here, briefly checked samsung and ATT sites and didn't see much. . .

Posted by: BioHazard5

Latest word is that the update is due the week of October 1.

Posted by: luv2hum

where would i be able to find the update on the website?

Posted by: gsxr800

Or maybe the week of 10/1/2010

Posted by: dfellars77

patience is a virtue... lets be thankful AT&T lets us update our firmware and install 3rd party apps w/out fear of bricking our phones.

Posted by: ghstintheshell

A book will be written on the life of the Blackjack owners. The finally chapter will read something like this "They waited, and waited...but it never came......."

Posted by: Kevad007

No, I think the final chapter should end like this "They waited, and waited, then they all at once turned off their data plans in protest and then it came!"

The ATT Forums claim support chat reps got an e-mail saying it now may be Oct. 22, 2007.

Let's see ....oh here is my link to my ATT page to turn off my Data Plan, time to use my old backup for a while.

Posted by: nvisi0n

Oh my god, I feel for you guys, I'm done waiting and happy with my 8525, now my wife is nagging me for WM6 on her BJ.

Posted by: cypher_OS

I think the wait is more a windows developer thing. Samsung and Att don't have much to do with the OS. This is a M$ item which like all its products never really makes it out of beta mode. . .

Nope. WM6 is out for the i600, which is the international version of the Blackjack (except that it's got a front camera as well as the rear, and WiFi).

Posted by: player911

Yea the i600 had WM6 released for it months ago. Where do you think we got the leaked version from. The leaked version came from Samsung when they passed it off to AT&T for finalization.

Microsoft and Samsung both were on the ball. AT&T dropped it. There is no one left to blame. Who knows what they are doing, but I just hope that the final release is good or they'll get an earful.

Honestly they are losing lots of money because people are getting tired of waiting and buying unlocked WM6 devices instead of AT&T blackjacks.

AT&T definitely isn't losing money because the average consumer won't pay $400-500 for an unlocked phone, they probably don't really care about WM6, and AT&T makes most of its money on service, not device sales.

Who wants to bet that at&T releases a WM6 BJ2, some other WM6 based devices before releasing WM6 for the BJ.... What incentive do they have to provide WM6 upgrade?

Improve their customer's impressions of them?

Here here!

When companies get so big (like AT&T) that they thumb their noses at their customers, it's time to do some house cleaning.

I am not by any means and ATT defender, but to say things like "they dropped the ball" or to somehow infer that this delay is due to incompetence or indifference shows a comlete lack of understanding of how this process works. The ATT standardization team is probably working through whatever bugs they have discovered specific to this device and going back and forth with MS to fix them or make them acceptable. It has nothing to do with WM6 working on other devices. They dont want to release anything that is going to create a rash of tech support issues. And I dont want them to release it untill they are done. Does any rational person think that they are losing money because people are so upset about a delay of WM6, that was never announced in the first place as far as I can tell, that people are leaving ATT because of this? Get real. It will be available when it's available.

I have been using the beta version of WM6 for a while and it works fine, but the improvements are evolutionary, not revolutionary. I would be interested to know how many people will actually download the upgrade once it is available. I will bet that it is a very mall percentage of users. We are all pretty tech savvy folks here but 99% of the users just want their email and the phone to work.

It was announced by AT&T that an update was going to be made available. This was 6 months ago or more. And honestly I have to completely agree with you because in February Samsung sent off the current version of WM6 that a lot of us are using today. It is almost completely functional aside from a few flaws. I wouldn't suspect that it would take them that long to fix a few bugs. If they had been working on it, then we woulda had it by now.

This is AT&T dropping the ball. It is no one elses fault.

Microsoft was timely as well as Samsung. AT&T is failing to deliver.

Granted I want a bug free release as well... but it shouldn't take them this long unless they weren't working that hard on it. If AT&T didn't promise a release, we the community would have fixed the bugs by now. But why waste time working on bug fixes when there is supposedly another release coming out in a few days?

Whether AT&T is going to release it or not, we just want to know. Honestly at this point a simple, "No" would be somewhat welcome. At least then the community would start working on it.

I'm just tired of carrying my damn USB cable everywhere with me just because they don't know when its due out.

Instead of saying, "it'll be out Oct 1.... I mean Oct 7.... I mean Oct 28.", just say it'll be out Jan 1 2008. At least that way, we know it'll be out then, and it'll give you (AT&T) Plenty of time to get it right. Just don't tease. It looks bad to fail a promise over and over again.

The T-Mobile Dash has 2 working WM6 ROM's for months now! Come on!
The old bugs need to fixed first and foremost! Among many other things, Bluetooth is terribly crippled and useless in most if not all cars for example. My lousy WM2003 phone (MPX220) did a better job then the BJ and it had BT 1.0!!! The BJ was advertised as one of the first BT 2.0 devices which sounded great but proved otherwise. The rebranding ROM did absolutely nothing in that regard and fixed primarily a roaming issue. Releasing WM6 without addressing the WM5 shortcomings would be worthless in my opinon.

Posted by: Parsonsbri

First of all, let me clear someting up. I do not work for ATT. I used to work for ATT from Oct. 2002-Oct 2003 in enterprise account sales (large corporate customers). These type of customers were the first to adopt data devices for obvious reasons.
The point is, I have a peripheral understanding of the process of getting these updates done and out to the customer.

A couple things to keep in mind. They (ATT) just spent a majority of their engineering resources on the iPhone launch (along with standarizing other new devices). i am guessing this was a massive undertaking. Second, Tmobile has more engineering bandwidth, IMO, because they dont have anywere near the demand of ATT or Verizon or even Sprint. Much easier to standardize when you have the time to get it on the list. Different devices have different issues.

I still have not seen a press release or formal announcement about ATT releasing a WM6 rom upgrade. I have seen lots of rumors and leaked memos (one of which i provied here), but nothing official. If you have any of that information, I would like to see it.

To say this is ATT's "fault" or they "dropped the ball" or they are "to blame" means that you just dont get how the process works.

That being said, I want the upgrade just as bad as anyone. I am just not throwing anyone under the bus for not living up to our projected wishes or demands. At the en of the day, if you dont like the situation, just change carriers and get a device you like.

I agree, along with some of the others that have stated that there was no guarantee of an upgrade...I liked the analogy someone used of buying a '07 chevy with a V6, and then they come out with a V8 in '08 and people expect to get an upgrade. Yes I know, that is a weak analogy, but the principle is the same. I have been playing with WM6 for, what? I think 4 months now? I enjoyed tweaking it, posting stuff here and at other locations about it, having debates about it, but I do not expect or get upset about not having the official release yet.

That being said however, it would be nice if the ppl that work at at&t, knowing that there is a small cache of BJs that are intent on WM6, to at least give good will for info of what the status is, especially on the at&t/cingular boards.

On another note... thiis one is making my mouth drool..hehe http://mobilitytoday.com/news/00803...ung_blackjack_2

In response to the 2 posts several up by the self-proclaimed non-AT&T defender. Your point about there being no press release has been raised several times before and it has been responded to by many several times before. You simply do not know what you are talking about and its clear you have not been reading much. Many here do in fact know and understand much more than your insulting claim we don't. I stand by my opinions that AT&T dropped the ball here. I will take all this poor handling into account in my next decision, I may cancel my data plan online very soon, and I hope someday they learn to care more about customers besides iPhoners.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

After installing the Mobile Office port from WM6, I honestly don't care anymore. If it comes, it comes. I've gotten what I considered to be the biggest upgrade, which was Office. Now I can view and edit all my files I need to.

Look, you are entitled to your opinion. As is everyone here. I was not trying to insult anyone. But my point still stands, show me one press release or formal communication from ATT to a customer announcing this release and I will throw them under the bus as well.

Get real though. The 2 year exclusive iPhone launch was a huge undertaking, but they didn't bail on other customers. All they did was not release a WM6 rom upgrade that is apparently not ready for prime time for a very very small percentage of customers.

not weak, but how about this one. I bought a 2005 Dodge Magnum with GPS that uses a DVD rom based system. Two months after I bought, Navteq, releases a new version for $200. You should have seen the message boards.
The difference: They announced it to the public on the web and via direct mail.

I just dont see the point of killing a company that has done nothing improper in my opinion. You can "want" a WM6 upgrade all day long, but that does not mean ATT must comply. I hope they do though!

Posted by: Kevad007

The reasons for my opinions are not to kill a company but to let them know that there are many here who do care about getting the upgrade for our Blackjacks and to let them know that we are not happy with the decisions they made which did result in a longer delay in resolving the issues necessary to get the job done. There are many aspects to what happened which go beyond the process which you correctly point out, does take time. Most of us understood that already, but there were many failures by ATT and to some extent Samsung and Microsoft in rolling this out, and there is conflict within ATT, as well as with Samsung about this whole thing. Dates were given as were time estimates to the media in Orlando and other places and times by company reps. The lack of a press release is the very last resort the companies use to deny when they mess up and fail, a technique used in the industry often. As I stated, all of the history and factors behind why many of us feel let down by ATT have been discussed in prior threads going back months and it just gets to be too redundant to get into a point-counter-point discussion once again. All I can suggest is you go back and read more of the history, and go to the ATT Support Forums for Samsung and read the entire two main threads, there are supporters, haters, defenders, complainers, and more. All of your points, and others in defense as well as replies and other factors on who said what when etc... are out there in these forums and others. And I have pointed out that to some extent that putting this matter on the priority list low enought to have this happen, was to a large extent due to the fact the Blackjack was marketed to the masses via major TV ads, and when that occurs, those of us who are early adoptors and more into gadgets compared to most, are deemed less of a concern. That is a reality that is out there, but we on this side do not have to like it, and I suppose that is why there are comments made against ATT expressing we don't like it. It just appears, they know we don't like it, but they have higher concerns and thus for dollars sake, they don't care enough.

Its not that your understanding of the general process is wrong, nor is it wrong to point it out, many of us agree that delays into August were probably justified even given the iPhone diversions. There just comes a point where they took too long, and again you have to know more of the entire picture, which it just appears from your recent arrival and posting, you don't seem to have gotten. There is a lot going on as to why this upgrade was delayed so long, its not just as simple as it appears. I think my main point is to express that as one of the Millions of people they targeted in their Multi-Million dollar several month long TV and Print Ads campaign is that I just would prefer that ATT, Samsung and Microsoft all work better together, plan better, and deliver bug fixes, O/S upgrades, improvements, and new applications, all supposed to be part of this upgrade, in a more timely and less frustrating way. I simply hope ATT gets its Act together better in the future or I and I suspect others will look for alternatives. I think ATT knows they could have and should have handled this better, now we have to see if they will continue to act like they don't care, or if they will make an effort to show all of their customers that they will try to do better!

Posted by: Parsonsbri

Kevad007,
Lots of good stuff there. Dont take my recent arrival here to mean I dont get it. I do.
I'm a gadget guy too. Even after moving on from ATT in 2003, I still keep tabs on whats going in the business through contacts and the other forums you mention.
I just have yet to see any evidence of official announcements of any kind. I would think that with the huge BJ marketing effort, that was apparently very successfull, they would do a release of some kind to announce a firm date when available.

I am just trying not to be negative because I dont think it helps and I have yet to see evidence of incompetence or lack of caring.

Dan, Downloaded and have your BJ WM6 file ready to go. It is connected and ready to flash, but when I click on the "Start" button in the Upgrader box I get the following "Select an Image to download". Any hints?
Thanks

Maybe it's just me, but I find Samsung's website a total waste of tubes. There is no useful information, no downloads to speak of. Just a slef-gratifying advertisement for the Blackjack.

Are you looking at a different site than me?

Well, yea. I am trying to find the file to restore my BJ to WM5 if I have to but all I can find is the instructions on HOW to do it. Plus, I want the modem drivers and can't find those either.
See this link,

OMG people - have you checked out the leaked WM6 Rom ? It's NOT THAT GREAT OR EXCITING !!!

This whole update is MINOR .... very small tweaks.... It's probably taking so long b/c it's such a joke and they are wondering who really cares about this crappy little update.

HTML email is the ONLY semi major part of the update and even that sucks because it's crippled. It doesn't D/L any pictures included as part of an HTML email unless you click "Download Internet Pictures" and even on 3G that takes forever and it's a joke !!

I would be saving up for iPhone 2.0 and hoping it has exchange server support or that the BJ2 is somehow a lot better than the current model. But getting yourself all worked up or excited about WM6 is going to lead to MAJOR dissapointment. Like Christmas morning and no BB Gun type of dissapointment. I anticipate tears.

Yes I do, because that is one of the main purposes of phones to business people. If AT&T takes out ICS... then we'll just put it back in. So why bother?

Plus without ICS... what would be the benefit of purchasing a higher dollar data plan?

WM6 is not revolutionary. Its just an upgraded, debugged version of WM5 with a glossy start menu. There are some nice perks like HTML email and higher resolution Internet Explorer. Nothing to really write home about, but they are there.

The reason people want an upgrade is because its owed an upgrade. WM5 was the first WM OS to do alot of things and its buggy. Honestly WM6 was supposed to be released as WM5 Second Edition. They only dubbed it WM6 at the last moment.

WM7 is where you'll get your major overhaul.

I want the upgrade for the improved (corrected might be a better term) bluetooth stack that's supposed to be bundled in it. If they released the stack as a standalone upgrade to WM5, I might not even upgrade...

The Blackjack is just terrible with a car kit.

Just trying to bring a little levity to the situaton. You are probably right.
I think many think they are going to slide by with with a standard PDA data plan and just tether. ATT says you need a higher price data plan to do that.

I am waiting for the upgraded BT stack. It works horribly now. One thing I have noticed with the beta is way way way improved battery time. Almost double for me .

Maintenance In Progress
Wireless from AT&T is continually working to improve our internet site for our customers. As part of this ongoing effort, we are currently doing maintenance. We apologize for this inconvenience and ask that you please try back again later.

Should you require immediate assistance, please call:

1-800-331-0500

Hmm, could this be the official WM6 release? Or maybe the Tilt being released online a day early? It's VERY odd for the site to go down for maintenance on a wed night, let a lone at this hour.

Posted by: siliconvalley78

Haha, let's hope it works out. I'll be keeping a close eye on this for the next hour.

BTW, do I need to add internet etc settings? Can't seem to access the web. Plus, anyone had any problems with Xpress Mail with this beta? LIked it as an alternative push system.

Thanks to all!

att.com is back up and no WM6 for the BJ - False alarm.

All they did was redesign the site a bit.

Wirelessly posted (Rake's BlackJack: SAMSUNG-SGH-I607/I607FG1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 6.12))

i sooo hate this waiting game, i've been having some trouble with wm6, like in internet explorer, when i open the favorites list, when i type the first letter it wont take me to any of the links that i've added, which is wierd cause i remember it was working before, and aside from that there is the dreaded call swap issue and the lights coming on randomly, which i've come to imagine that it happens when its checking for email or using the internet, but who knows.

the point is, i wants me some official wm6.

Posted by: mike.parsons13

Well I've been *****ing to AT&T over this, just to see what I could get out of them, and this morning, I got this email...

Quote:
I do apologize that the WM6 upgrade is not available at this time. AT&T
is working with our handset manufacturers that currently supply Windows
Mobile 5 devices to possibly upgrade these devices to WM6. At this time
no decision has been made. Additional information will be posted to http://business.cingular.com/busine...s/pocket-pc.jsp
once more information has been obtained.

So now I'm being told that NO decision has been made....just thought this was interesting.

What a Joke ATT is....

WM6 sucks anyway.... so does WM5 pretty much - it takes 10 steps to do almost everything.... The BJ screen is pretty tiny. The calendar is a joke. Maybe BJ2 will be better. Otherwise I'll wait for iPhone 2.0

So if it all sucks, why not switch device and carriers.

Oh wait...Troll!

As some of you may know by now, ATT has issued a press release about the Tilt going on sale tomorrow, and it has a couple of interesting comments that may give clues as to the Mobile 6 delay for other ATT phones. This is great to see, it shows they can communicate effectively with the public as they should!

http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?p...articleid=24486

1. Note in the fist paragraph they state that the Tilt is "the first AT&T enable Windows Mobile 6 smart device..." I find that interesting that they do not say it is the first Mobile 6 Professional and just the fact they make a big deal it is the "FIRST" Mobile 6 unit, which they call a "smart device" as opposed to a PDA. My impression, AT&T has made decisions about when to release the Blackjack Mobile 6 that were affected by when the Tilt became available. To improve relations with HTC, they gave them the "First" slot!

Quote:
AT&T's First Windows Mobile 6 Device, The AT&T Tilt Features Groundbreaking Angled Screen, Global 3G Capabilities, Built-in GPS and Wi-Fi

Quote:
AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has announced that the AT&T Tilt™, the most feature-packed smart device available in the United States, will debut exclusively through AT&T beginning Friday, Oct. 5. The AT&T Tilt is the first AT&T-enabled Windows Mobile 6 smart device and features an innovative slide-out QWERTY keypad design, a 3-megapixel camera, 3G data speeds from AT&T's UMTS/HSDPA-based BroadbandConnect network and complete global connectivity.

2. AT&T lists the e-mail options and they do not include Good Mobile Messenging. A memo to AT&T employees also posted in the Tilt thread in Howard Forums indicates to note that Good Mobile Messenging will not be available upon launch but will be later. Some info. esp. re: the Treo 750 threads indicated Good Mobile Messenging was having delays getting their new version to work on Mobile 6, and it looks like AT&T finally said, we cannot wait for you.

As I have stated, there were factors besides claimed long bug fix processes that have held up the "decision" (meaning conscious choice) to hold up Mobile 6 for the Blackjack. I am sure HTC benefited and iPhone tooo. If I were Samsung, right about now I would not be so pleased, they have backed up the upgrade so long, now that they have new units closer to coming out.

An excellent point that I failed to think of. ATT (and other carriers) is big on "exclusives" and first to market gimicks. It would not suprise me at all that they delayed WM6 for BJ due to an exclusive 1st launch with the Tilt.
Hopefully, our upgrade wont be far behind.

What good is a huge screen when you can't install anything? The iPhone doesn't need a big screen to look at Calendar appointments and contacts. Plus the size difference is key. The blackjack has a full QWERTY keyboard and is smaller in size. A larger display means a larger phone in my pocket.
A larger screen doesn't warrant a larger resolution. The blackjack still has a 320x240 resolution (QVGA). The iPhone has a 480x320. So its not that much bigger resolution.

Having a higher resolution on a smaller screen = crisper images. A BIG screen running a lower resolution = choppy image quality. With the big screen size of the iphone, I would expect nothing less then a 640x480 VGA screen resolution.

What does all of this mean... that my blackjack will have a crisper image then your iPhone.

I was looking at the BlackJack on the AT&T site... and noticed they're coming out with a BlackJack 2? Is this new BlackJack 2 going to be that much better?

What flaws/cons does the regular BlackJack have? Can anybody elaborate on why the calendar is a "joke"?

Thanks

There is no "Blackjack 2" info anywhere. It's just people seeing devices with similar designs and thinking it's the upgrade to an older one. Fact is it could be true but it's just a rumor as of now. Case in point, the RAZR and KRZR. One could think the KRZR was the upgrade for the original RAZR but we all know that's not the case. So people just getting a lil a head of themselves.

As for flaws, well that's debateable but some people consider the design a "flaw/con" or the fact that it doesn't have a touch screen. The OS is also one so it all depends. There's lots of opinions i could give you and some might mean something to you while you might not give a damn about the others. So best for you is to run down to your nearest cell shop, i'm sure they all have a blackjack you can play with. After that, make up your own mind about the device.

The calendaring system is just like the one in Outlook and if you're used to that you'll love it. I'm not sure what's missing but i think it's enough for my needs. WM6 doesn't suck to me but as i said before, some people consider it a "flaw"

Thanks for the insight! Yeah, I've been hesitant about making the switch from a "regular" cell phone... but I'm realizing I need more (checking emails, calendar) etc. I love the Outlook calendar system, so I guess this would fit right in!

I think I'll go pick it up this wekeend.

The calendar is fine. Just like outlook. The current Blackjack uses Windows Mobile 5. Some complain about battery life and having bluetooth issues with car kits or built in blue tooth in the car. not an issue for me. I think it is a great device and a great deal right now.

The Blackjack 2 is rumored to be in testing which is supposed to be complete 10/22 with a release date to be determined. It will have Windows Mobile 6 which has sharper graphics, slightly improved user interface and supposed to have improved bluetooth. We will see when it launches.

I dont think so. All internal communication from my buddy who works there still has the upgrade on the schedule.

Besides, my contract is up on 10/20. If the deal is good enough, I would consider an upgrade.

That being said, outside of some minor issues, I have been very happy with my BJ compared with my old Blackberry, Treo 600. back to Blackberry and Treo 650. BJ has outperformed them all.

OK, I am getting some updates on the updates.

Good news is that the official upgrade is being hand delivered from AT&T to Samsung for posting on their site ASAP.

Bad news is they gave it to the guy who is also responsible for updating the 3G coverage map

Yea me too. My updated updater told me that the updated update will be release 10/13/07. Thats the updated update for the WM6 Update on the Blackjack. Check here for more updated updates.

If it is to be posted ASAP, and the following post says the 13th, who is right? If your updater is right, wouldn't that mean today or tomorrow probably?

Yes, No, Maybe......hows that?

Posted by: LuvrGirl

So I've been hesitant to buy the Blackjack because supposedly it doesn't have GPS... but when I look online and setup a plan, services, etc... it gives me an option to add Telenav GPS w/ 10routes for $5.99, and it lists the Samsung Blackjack as an eligible phone... so what's the deal?

Does the Blackjack have GPS?

Posted by: SHoTTa35

It doesn't have GPS. The phone can work with Bluetooth GPS devices tho.

Quote:
Also, unless you own one of the HP iPaq hw6900 series models, which have built-in GPS antennas, you will need to get a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

I wouldn't get TeleNAV tho, just get TomTom or even Google Maps and slap that on your phone and you're good to go with a Bluetooth GPS.

To Enable BT GPS and use with Google Maps.

I talked to an AT&T Rep @ Digital Life 2007 this year and I showed him my BlackJack and he just about **** when he saw I was running WM6. I told him it was a leaked beta and I asked when the official one would come out.

I THINK he said either October 17 or October 27. Not sure but it should be this month.

I have 2 error messages, the one you guys already posted and worked on, the one about the remote party ended in the other thread, and the following error, is this one fixable, or do I need to exchange my BJ for another one?
I entered the web address, and keep getting this or the other error message...

note of the following things that happened, before the internet connection was lost several items: I did order Media Net 14.99 to buy Pac-Man, unsure if this did anything to the phone/settings, I also deleted some SMS messages I had gotten after ordering the game. I also accidentally dropped the phone onto a ceramic bathtile type flooring, so I am unsure what caused the internet not to work anymore, I think everything else works. I have not tried the phone or SMS yet to see if those two items work, but so far, NO SMS messages in a week and half. so I assume that's also out of order.

Error message:

"Your Internet connection is not configured properly. Please verify your settings in Data Connections"

I just tested the SMS, it works, sent a test note to myself. Now just tried the phone, works as I called myself. so just my internet isn't working. Oh the most beautiful thing about the dropping accident, nothing broke, still looks like brand new! Ahh...but can't access websites, internet. Sigh...

Is the error message fixable that I posted about or am I stuck, to the exchange mail service? It's under 1 yr warranty.

Thanks in advance!

The Blackjack doesn't have GPS built in... but I use an external unit. You can pick them up for around $50 - $100.

I like having external because:

A. It runs on its own battery (mine is 1700mh which runs for 3-4 months)
B. Built-in GPS hogs the phones small battery making it almost useless

I use my phone enough as it is without trying to run a GPS device off of it. I keep my GPS unit in my car and tap it on whenever I need it.

But honestly, if your looking for a device that would best suite a GPS unit... you might want to look into a Touchscreen device. I have a PPC and a Blackjack. Trying to navigate is MUCH easier with a full touch screen of a PocketPC.

You might want to look into one of the new HTC devices or an AT&T Tilt.

Man you guys are beating a dead horse. This Wm6 upgrade ain't happening till next year

Posted by: Kevad007

Its not quite dead yet. But it sure looks like it had MAD HORSE DISEASE

Posted by: mr_c0w

I have been running the 'beta' since a few weeks after the leak. So far I have only experienced a few intermittent problems. One of the ones I had read about was that there was an issue where the phone was running hot. I noticed this briefly when I first installed, but after about a day it calmed down. Recently I took a trip out of town, and when I got off the plane and restarted my phone, it started running hot again, then after about a day it was back to normal. The same thing happened on my return trip. Now after about 24 hrs, its back to running like a champ. My theory is that something about changing cities messes with how the phone works. During the first 24 hrs my data connection dropped out, and transfer speeds were very slow.

Has anyone else had an issue like that? Any thoughts?

Posted by: player911

I found that every time I reset my blackjack, its gets more stabile. I don't know why.

i never experienced the hot battery, but that may be partially due to me resetting the device several times initially after WM6 upgrade.

I do notice the data connection won't work sometimes, but that is rare, and just requires to turn off the phone connectivity and then back on. I also find that sometimes it'll get stuck on EDGE and I have to do this to get it back to 3G. Luckily my wife has a blackjack so I can compare signals (hers is WM5).

Although do watch out for Internet Explorer. Sometimes it'll just stop working and you have to manually end the task in task manager and reload it for it to continue working. I guess the allocated cache gets filled and can no longer download information. Make sure this is not the same problem.

I verify its the connection by using other internet applications like trying to sync my mail, or watch YouTube via vTap. If they work, but PIE doesn't, then its PIE

So the signal thing could very well have something to do with the towers.

Mine doesn't do this... but my LG Cu500 does. But when i'm in my office at work, I get no signal. My CU500 would sit there all day and search for a signal. It not only would get hot but kill my battery by 5pm.

Maybe there is something to that. Perhaps its losing its 3G signal, and then continues to look for it (which is why it gets hot).

I dunno. If I were you, I would backup my contacts, calendar appointments, etc, and just hard reset the thing back to factory defaults. I only use Activesync for backups/restores. There are lots of problems when restoring from Sprite for some reason.

Give that a try and see if it fixes your issues.

The memory should work now unless there is a physical limitation on the hardware, in which they won't be able to do anything about.

As far as the BT stack... well I only hope. Worse case scenerio is that someone removes the stack all together and replaces it with a Widcomm or a MS Stack. We did this on the Dell Axim x51v (well I just did some testing).

If the memory is limited, there is probably little that can be done. Windows Mobile supports the higher cards, so its not limited by software.

There is lots to be done about the BT Stack though. Samsung made the BT Stack, so should be able to update it and include it. Its their device.

Posted by: MetaOrbit

Well, this doesn't look very promising for current Blackjack owners hoping for a WM6 upgrade:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/09/...ed-as-the-i617/

If it's as similar to the current BJ, I almost wonder if the WM6 beta that was leaked was being used to test for use on the BJII, rather than to hand out as an upgrade...

There's a good many people who report over 2GB won't work on WM5, but works in WM6.

I have just the "connections" link in settings folder

I did setup the GPRS setting per one thread, for one error message
Otherwise, I don't see any actual 'data settings' to select.

confused here, since this is my first pda I bought earlier this year, and first time I haven't been able to connect to the internet/media net.

uhm i havea list of connections:
wireless
beam
bluetooth
usb
dial-up
GPRS
More...

for GPRS, I click on it, goes to "media net' I click on that
settings:
COnnects to "Internet"
Access Point: wap.cingular.com
User Name BLANK
password BLANK
Primary DNS 0.0.0.0
Secondary DNS 0.0.0.0
IP address BLANK

then I go back out of that category to GPRS authencitation
set to CHAP as per the other thread I found days ago.

Any ideas? I mean the phone works, SMS works, no internet
Pac-Man works....obvouisly.

Posted by: spunkyBJack

do I need to adjust my Proxy settings?

Wireless manager says Bluetooth is OFF
Phone is ON...doesn't say Media Net like it did once.

any suggestions before I contact the tech support people at AT&T(Cingular)
which I really don't want to do, hate being put on hold forever...

After I get connected again, I would like to get some type of Navigator GPS installed on it and Windows Mobile 6, (excel, ppt, and word) I really need to edit that kind of stuff while on the road. I am new to BJ, so any links or point me to the page of thread with info to download the stuff and what settings are needed is much appreciated.

Did anyone notice if you go to ATT.com's Answer Center and search for "Samsung Blackjack with Windows Mobile 6" Hit number 5 shows you how to set up good email messaging, and in one of his screenshots he tried to blur it out but it's clearly dated 9/28/2007 at 12:42 pm, in an email from Abraham De[illegible], the topic is Reminder: "greenlight" on Blackjack WM6 [illegible].

The about screen reads:

CE OS 5.2.1437 (Build 17944.0.3.1)
Radio Version i607UCGI3
RIL Version 2.002
Available Storage: 36.01MB

Also interesting is that some of the hotlinked tutorials are not yet up, looks like the whole block of https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB85500.html to https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB85599.html are reserved for the WM6 Blackjack, less than half of it is populated, with hotlinks to pages that arent there.. and there are a number of Yahoo/AIM screennames that are most likely co-workers of the person who set it up. I bet they all have access to WM6 and you could bug them for it :P

I just thought that was funny. :P

btw SpunkyBJack, looks like you're missing the WAP@CINGULARGRPS.COM username and CINGULAR1 password.

http://supportcingular.atgnow.com/c...%2FKB85580.html

We'll see.

And now the access is locked.

Yeah, I have the $19.99/mo smartphone unlimited plan. Much nicer than the $39.99/mo PDA unlimited plan.

Wow they banned you for that eh.. touchy.

On that same note I noticed they specifically mention in the "How to set up internet sharing" help page that it will default to wap.cingular.. and you have to change it to isp.cingular or you may be charged.. good ol' at&t.

DA_G
Thanks, I just tried it, augh, still getting the second long error message I typed other day. I think on pg 73. I typed in the url, then get error message and a white screen, have to hit home key to get out of the still white screen. Augh... Is there supposed to be a .com in the access point line or just wap.cingular. BTW, if they're AT&T now, should I be replacing cingular with at&t ?

Wow, you sure found all the WM6 for BJ stuff, cool...
The new BJII sure looks the same, would be neat to know what's IN it, if faster, more applications, etc...

Hey imp3tigo how did you get a 19.99 plan ?
I have the 39.99 unlimited plan, oh man!

Uhm, did you say I need to change the isp too? or was that to somebody's else post?

Here's how everything should read under Settings - Connections - Menu - Advanced - Menu - Options:

After that, open up Internet Explorer and go Menu - Tools - Options - Connections.

It should read:

That should be the full bevy of settings. There are photos and a step by step guide provided by cingular/at&t here: https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB72585.html

Note the DNS address is optional, you can leave that blank if you want. Those settings are for OpenDNS which tends to perform better than at&t's DNS server (faster page loading)

Things to try if that still wont get you going:

Remove the proxy alltogether.
change wap.cingular to ims.cingular, and remove the username/password.

How did the WM6 for blackjack become a troubleshooting BJ's internet setting thread?

Sometimes the most popular board attracts everyone... Doesn't bother me, but if you think about it, this thread would be incredibly short:

ThCaesar: any update on when WM6 for BJ for comes out?
Nvision: already missed the date, no other news.
txcaesar: oh...ok.....so..uh..hows the weather where youre at Nvision?......

c'mon, brevity is fun!

Posted by: CocheseUGA

You'd also think someone's first post would be a bit more introductory.

Oct 22 still seems plausible.

I agree. Interesting about that post from Metaorbit (#1094) about the BJ II..that and teh info that it reads about the 7 being for at&t (if you dont follow what I mean, go read the link in that post)

but to tell you the truth, I'm liking (licking?) this one:

http://mobilitytoday.com/news/00803...ung_blackjack_2

But in the spirit of following up and staying on track with what this thread was started for (no flaming to anyone); I think we've ruled it out that there are issues of trying to prep the website for info on the update, and that it's in at&t's court as to why they are not releasing it it...my hunch, IMO its because of glitches with it collaborating with Videosharing...its just my guess.

btw, is anyone hit my site for the software I put up there to share?

As much as we would like the upgrade now, and find a way etc... I do agree that to the extent they have legitimate important issues that they are discovering and deciding to improve, then the delay as frustrating as it is, and it is, probably will turn out to be for the best. We hopefully will soon find out, and we may be able to see how well it turned out!

The several issues I have seen raised as possible delay factors seem to include:

1. Good Mobile Messengering was not working properly in Mobile 6 and the folkes who are responsible for correcting that have been making revisions, but still encountering problems, resulting in pushing back completion dates now into Oct. For some reason AT&T wants to include this with the upgrade instead of just offering it as a .cab file for add on later when it is done, which might be due to making it reside in the system files, and harder to delete but work better. I just don't know enough about their contract and the validity of reasons of putting out the upgrade with it or without it. The Tilt was released without it, but was supposed to have it, and the delay from Sept. 25th, to October 5th probably had to do with removing it and retesting it. We will only know how this turns out if and when we get the update.

2. Mobile Office 6 does not properly open Office 2007 documents and requires a patch to resolve the issue. The patch appeared ready in late September, but was not released yet, apparently issues still exited although it was at the RC level, almost final. Again, it maybe that the word was we just need a few more weeks and then you avoid the need to offer it seperately. Perhaps combined with number 1 above they decided to wait for both. However, both are just applications, not necessary to the Operating System, so are the delays for them really necessary if we can just get a download .cab to patch it later? If the thing is just delay after delay after delay, at some point does AT&T just say let's go without them, and add them later. This also raises the issue of the built in Updater within Mobile 6. Cannot they be provided or at least the Microsoft Mobile 6 Office patch from the built in system. If not, what good is it, esp. if its contributing to the delay of this length.

3. Video Share is not performing as they want so more revisions are being done to try and get it better. There are so many reasons for this including the general problems they have had with 3G which is still so new and just being put to work by us all this past year. They have had hand off issues, capcity issues, delays with adding in markets due to FCC regulations and so on. Some of this is withing ATT control and some not, and some appears to be they slowed down 3G deployment for over 6 months here in 2007 for reasons best known by them, some maybe understandable, but some may have been just saving money, or focusing more on iPhone.

4. Timing was effected by making a decision some time ago to not release Mobile 6 until the TILT was out with it first. The Tilt got delayed, so other Models upgrade got delayed. And the Tilt delay may have been in part related to issues numbers 1, 2 and 3 above ALL OF WHICH ENDED UP BEING LEFT OUT OF THE TILT, to move it along as people got really frustrated just waiting for it, why unbranded models from HTC started selling here in the USA.

5. Timing is being effected by when the Blackjack II is to be ready. Although the FCC approval just occurring, I don't think I have seen a phone out for usually 3 or 4 months minimum from when that happens putting it off until next year, but I suppose there is a way given the apparent relatively few changes from Blackjack 1 and all of our beta testing Mobile 6 since late May, that would allow it to come out before the holiday season. This issue has at least two points of view and maybe there is some confilict now between what Samsung wants and what ATT wants.

6. There are other unknown problems with fixing original bugs, upgrades, new applications and/or the Operating System they keep uncovering as they finish up here.

7. ATT delayed things to favor HTC and APPLE sales, they are trying to improve or keep best of relations with them, which maybe at the expense of an already troubled relationship with Samsung? I do think the main reason there was never a big old press release from either Samsung or ATT on providing the upgrade for the ATT phones (like Tmobile and other did) was due to trying to favor Apple and HTC and show them some consideration. I don't disagree with their decision necessarily from a business point of view, it would have been difficult to promoter the upgrade for the Blackjack there in May and June right on the eve of releasing the iPhone.

Well am I sure there are other speculative reasons we can come up with for what ever worth they are. Feel free to add or correct mine!

Oh and heres to the release of Mobile 6 for other ATT phones, may they please come out ASAP!

My CV works just fine. You'd probably just be able to call them and have them fix it, but then they'd probably make you change plans.

Nothing special, IMO.

IT WORKED, FINALLY!!!!!!!!
THANKS DA_G !!

Now, I want to install WM6 and a GPS Navigator but will hold off on those, until I read thru all the threads first.

Oh, I added the DNS numbers, took out the extra 80 in Proxy, and changed Secure WAP to WAP, and uhm...what else was wrong that I had to change to the settings you provided... Oh mine says Cingular WAP where yours says ATT WAP...I cannot change that since it's a subheading Category.

DO I keep it on the DNS settings, or will it still work without it now that I have the internet working again? Will I get charged using that open-DNS?

THANKS!

Posted by: Da_G

Cingular WAP/AT&T WAP is only cosmetic, it's because i'm running the updated WM5 firmware and you're on the original cingular firmware.

You can read more about OpenDNS at http://www.opendns.com if you'd like, it's an alternate DNS service to the one AT&T provides, it wont cost you anything more in billing. Youu can take it out and your internet should work just the same.

I use an external SirfStar III bluetooth GPS with Google maps and Live Search, works great. I have iGuidance and iGo on my PDA if I need to use the GPS in an area with no signal. (since Google Maps and Live Search don't give you an easy way to save a map for later use)

I'm probably gonna go back to wm6 too, I can't stand the keyboard in WM5.. don't know how the keystroke dropping passed samsung's QA..

Rune1: Do you go through the proxy server? It's required for CV to work.. if you take it out you get an error although I can't remember what exactly, something like CV is incompatible with this device.

Bump. Keeping it alive.

Friday the 11th. Supposedly the "next" planned day for release is next Friday, the 17th.

Will it ever come?

I'm anticipating the WM6 release so much, that once it gets here, and its basically the same version I have been running with a few bug fixes, it's gonna be a bummer.

Its kind of exciting waiting for the WM6 patch. After its released it'll prolly get quiet on the Blackjack Front.

Posted by: jhruth

The WM6 Leaked ROM is ok but NOTHING exciting ? What are people waiting for that's so great? I've heard complaints about the BlueTooth functionality but that's about it really.... The HTML email is crippled and a joke - does not load pictures automatically so for EACH and every email you have to tell it to D/L pictures. I know it's a security feature but shouldn't I be able to pick approved emails and have it remember which ones it's ok to DL pictures from ?

Frankly it's really a joke and I fear the day it actually comes out and people wonder what the hell they've been waiting for !!

So seriously people, what is it you think you'll be getting with WM6 that's going to be so great ?

I'm hoping that it will fix Bluetooth tethering for Vista. If it does that, it will be worth it to me. Voice dialing would also be nice.

from the time this post started until now, i went thru two blackjacks, and 8525 and now with a tilt. i just think that for those still waiting for the official update, the chances are better that a newer device will be available first.

AT&T just announced new Device Centers throughout the USA where you can get an instant replacement phone should yours brick. Hmmm, maybe another speculative reason for the delay is they were having problems with failed upgrades in tests and so they in part push back longer knowing these new Device Centers were getting closer to opening this fall. As the phones are all loaded up differently with different programs and changes, there are more possibilites that a certain combos of settings and configurations will raise a problem. And they did have lots of such problems with the iPhone going to 1.1.1. The device center exchange only applies to certain phones but the Blackjack is there on the list. One thing that would have hurt ATT more than a delay of a month or two would be too many bricked phones and then no easy solution for fixing or replacement. Maybe too they are still having problems resolving the phone heating up after the upgrade and some phones are failing then, so having a way to replace them fast helps out a lot. Just speculation, but here it is right before. Regardless of any connection or not on the timing or one more reason to slow down the upgrade till these centers opened, all Blackjack owners who are about to upgrade, this is great news should you process fail and you end up with a dead phone. You can drive right up and get a new one (looks like all are open 7 days a week!) as all Blackjacks are still within the one year period. Just don't spill any thing on yours or drop it.

Who knows, the Blackjack along with the 8525 were the first real 3G system users this past year and there has to be potentially a lot of em out there. How they interact with the 3G towers probably effects the whole system, battery use, heating up, reception and could interfere with other phone reception such as their beloved iPhone, so tweaking how the Blackjack interacts with the 3G has to be maximized before they unleash it, since there are so many all over the nation. And fixing all bugs, and battery life, and heating issues and recpetion, data flow, switching, etc.... is probably great to do with Blackjack 1, so they get off to a better start with Blackjack II.

If Blackjack II does not have WiFi which would help ease strain off the 3G system in many ways, AT&T is just plain lame!

While I agree with the poster above that Mobile 6 is better titled Mobile 5.5, its just not that big of an update, it still offers some improvements, bug fixes and new applications which I very much would like to have. People should be reminded not to get too hyped up or they will set themselves up for dissappointment. However, I have used the leaked version on one of my two Blackjacks, and I really do like the html mail coming from the 4smartphone.com Exchange 2007 Servers and there are several improvements with calendars, tasks, contacts, and fixing several issues including that really annoying problem where TCPMP messes up the homepage top bar area in Mobile 5. I hear what you are saying about the lack of mind altering improvements in Mobile 6, but despite that, I still very much want it and will use it!

When it comes to Windows Mobile, I'm not an idiot. I have my Dell Axim x51v running WM6 and my blackjack running WM6.

Just because there aren't "spectacular" features included in the WM6, there are at least some.

Video Sharing is now included.
HTML Email (just because it blocks pictures doesn't mean its lame)
Higher Picture resolution in IE
GUI Overhaul
Faster response
Cleaner code
Less bugs
More support

WM6 isn't anything special, but it is an update. An update that is needed. The only reason people are getting antsy is because they keep making empty promises. When someone says you can have something, you want it. When AT&T dangles it over our heads for months, it makes us REALLY want it.

Everyone knows the benefits of upgrading. No one expects this thing to make our blackjacks into super computers, we just want the damn update. Simple.

Posted by: Da_G

Don't forget if you type relatively fast, WM5 drops keystrokes like mad.. WM6's keyboard driver can actually keep up :P

I've got a pretty decent hacked together version of WM5+WM6+WM6Euro going on, it's a Frankenstein! I'm still trying to figure out the key repeat rate to get it back to how it was in WM5..

Maybe YOU should read the 1st Amendment. It prohibits Congress from making any laws that restrict free speech. It doesn't say anything about the moderators of these forums.

can I get a link to the WM6 rom? I could've sworn I was it on page 20 something, but its easier to ask than go through the 70 whatever pages.

Nvm, got it.

Posted by: Da_G

Those with the WM6 hot battery issue, I think I may have figured out a relatively easy way to eliminate it, at least with the 2 days of testing i've given it so far..

If you flash the phone back to WM5, then flash it to WM6 and let it get to the part where the numbers are going by very fast on the display (after eboot and pda os flash complete, before phone flash), unplug it at this point and pull the battery.. then put it back in and boot up the phone.. this has the effect of leaving you with the WM5 radio firmware and the WM6 pda firmware.. so far I haven't run into the hot battery issue.

Danger of bricking the phone with this method should be very low, as the eboot portion has already successfully been flashed, so at worst case you should be able to boot the phone in firmware mode and do a complete flash to WM5 or WM6.

Posted by: iceninecynic

in the WM6 rom, anybody know how to change text message and email notifications to custom rings? What folder they should be in, etc.

Even though the WM6 rom has a "ringtones" folder, I found they have to been in the root directory for them to show up in the "Other Sounds" settings.

I believe they can also be put in the Windows directory.

My only guess would be a registry edit (which I'm not yet familiar with). In WM5 you can change what your right softkey is a shortcut to in the settings menu, but not in WM6. You can rename shortcuts and all of that, but I'm not THAT concerned with it.

I've had my RSK as "Call History" on my last 4 phones, so it being stuck on "Contacts" is a little annoying. Hopefully they'll have this fixed in the official release.

New Speculation.

AT&T & Samsung will announce the Blackjack II and upgrade to Mobile 6 for the Blackjack as a major press announcement on the eve of the major CTIA Wireless Trade Show at the Moscone Center in San Francisco starting October 23rd. Unless they want to make the show and annoucement about the major fiasco which has been the delay and repeated unofficial offical missed dates, they will further announce that the update is online before October 23rd.

It's pretty freakin' funny that ATT releases an update to their internet TOS the next day talking about restricting customer's freedom of expression concerning their business.

on microsoft.com they had wm6 on display with the blackjack the main display

the green look is a theme that can be used on any WM phone. That's not WM6. It's just actually the bootup screen of AKU3 and up.

I have AKU3 and mine is blue.

Ok fine, the AKU 3.X.X or something.... here:

Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 3.4.2

That's for the Cingular 3125 and it has the green boot screen. All of the phones with that one or higher has that bootup.

yeah but the page Windows Mobile 6 Phone...what else does that so i guess the tilt mogul and dash have wm5?

Well here is my install order:

Resco File Explorer.cab (to device)
App Unlock.cab (to device)
Resco Registry.cab (to device)

Do this RegEdit:
Open the key
HKLM\System\StorageManager\Profiles\SDMemory
and change the value of the string "Folder" to "My documents".
Next delete the folder \My Documents
reset.

My Documents now equals your storage card. So...

Install rest:
Microsoft Live.cab (to "My Documents")
TCPMP.cab (to "My Documents")
vTap.cab (to "My Documents")
MobiBlogger.cab (to "My Documents")
whatever else

I really like Texas Hold'em Poker for my blackjack. I also throw up some java games. Here is my list of known games to work fullscreen on the Blackjacks 320x240 Landscape QVGA Screen.

Wait, I haven't been following along. This will allow you to install any programs to your storage card and not run into any conflicts? I've only installed a couple of programs and already I'm down to 7MB available.

Posted by: Da_G

Hey, I notice you install the App Unlock.cab, on that note, so far I haven't seen a cab that does a full unlock on the phone, so here's one straight from microsoft that works over activesync:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ang=en#filelist

Push the "Security Off" configuration to your device when connected to activesync, done! It will also show you your current security configuration so you can see just what the unlock you've done already does/doesnt do.

Come on Samsung, finish your site updates and have the updater set up to allow including VISTA OS, and let the update fly! Why wait till Monday and take impact away from a Blackjack II announcement at the CTIA show, let it out of the cage today, tonight, or ASAP and create a buzz about its release over the weekend before the big CTIA show in San Francisco! No more delays. No statements about its coming in another week or two but we had a problem so need more time, get it done already! It is time!

There has been some talk about the impact of Blackjack II on the desire of AT&T and more importantly Samsung to go forward and offer the upgrade for us original Blackjack users. As many of you know over at the AT&T Samsung Forum for which this entire thread was created when the leaked WM6 update was announced there, the AT&T moderator has made a significant comment that AT&T is going forward with the WM6 upgrade and news about it will be coming very soon! I continue to believe that a lot of the timing is now based upon the CTIA Wireless Tradeshow starting next week in San Francisco.

In the past few hours AT&T issued a press release announcing the first device to work on the new HSUPA will be the Sierra Wireless AirCard 881. In the press release they state as follows:

Quote:
Compatible with High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technologies, the AirCard 881 PC will enable average upload speeds between 500 Kbps and 800 Kbps as AT&T commences the industry's first U.S. deployment of High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA). After completion of comprehensive testing and certification, AT&T is rolling out HSUPA technology in its network today, with availability to be announced in select U.S. markets later this fall.

The Press Release states that this announcement is being made now only after they completed comprehensive testing and certification, which it implies just occurred, and that the rolling out of HSUPA is occurring TODAY!

Was the Blackjack upgrade held up until HSUPA testing and certification was completed because it will include a method to enable HSUPA on the Blackjack? Is HSUPA desired for better rollout of Video Share? If the Blackjack cannot be enabled to HSUPA, is that another difference for some to jump to the Blackjack II?

We shall soon see!

one last note if it doesnt come monday i am sure it will never come....i think it should be on the att site at 12:01 am because that when the tilt appeared, i dont know if premier has anything to do with it

Posted by: NickS_

No WM6... yet.

Posted by: player911

You guys need to chill. It'll be here. Trust me. They're working on it. The leaked version is very sufficient for the time being even with a few bugs.

I do agree that they are waiting to release it now for the show. It'll give everyone something to talk about.

Posted by: CocheseUGA

It'll be here before you know it. There's all sorts of sports to keep me entertained until then, and it will sneak up on me.

Posted by: xcrunner

anyone expecting blackjack deals anytime soon? I would be so ridiculously obsessed w/phones that I sell mine and now want one again...atleast until the iphone of course.

edit: On Premiere of course. I am kinda hoping they'll mark it down significantly (maybe free? ha I can dream) when the BJ II comes out. When's that expected anyway?

Posted by: ROLLTIDE

They are $75 on premiere now with 1 year contract

Add the phone and data plan to your cart and watch the phone drop to $74.99

Then once your phone comes log into your online account and drop the data plan

So now AT&T has announced a major roll out of Napster music downloads directly to phones just hours ago, about 9pm PST so midnight EST. The press releases are not even up on A&T's site but its all over the AP and Reuters etc....

Speculation number 234, this service will be one of the added applications to the Blackjack upgrade and keeping it under wraps until it was time to announce and was working is another reason we have had to wait so long? If its built into the the upgrade they would have held it back until this announcement or we all would have seen it and gone oh look at this!

We will have to see, but why can't they just have this be a .cab download program? Maybe it will be and there is no relationship with the Blackjacks or timing other than as a 3G phone, it will be one of the main phones to really be able to take advantage of wireless downloads in a timely way (under a minute avg. per song as one press story claims AT&T told them).

OK, so part 2 of the Press Announcments today with news about the Blackjack and Blackjack II is still coming .....?

Quick update on the status of any press releases or announcements from the CTIA show in San Francisco that is starting this week. The press release for Napster downloads went up on the AT&T site at 8:00am est, just minutes ago. No news on new phones, or anything else, just that one.

However, the CTIA kicks off this morning with an event called Mobile Entertainment Live sponsored by Billboard and others at the Esplanade Ballroom, Mascone South Hall. The Keynote Speaker this morning at just after 9:00am Pacific Standard Time (San Francisco, California) is Mr. Mark Collins VP of Consumer Data Products with AT&T Wireless WITH SPECIAL SURPRISE GUEST. Hmmm, could it be Matchbox 20?

Come on Mark, announce the Blackjack upgrade! LIVE at the show!!!! YOU CAN DO IT!

Posted by: gsxr800

Oh Well. Maybe next year.

Posted by: rakeyoung

Wirelessly posted (Rake's BlackJack: SAMSUNG-SGH-I607/I607FG1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 6.12))

hmmm, and i was wondering if i was the only bloke who was up bright and early to see if the upgrade was available.

guess not.

maybe later i suppose.

if they dont release it ask mark what the hell is up

Just got of the CHAT with AT&T support.

Apparently by the end of Oct, WM6 "MIGHT" be released ('cause they could not guarantee it at all).
Pointed me to the Samsung-USA website where it will be posted, once it's released : http://www.samsung.com/us/support/d...portDownMain.do

So what's new - I guess you guys already knew all of this, right.

Posted by: Kevad007

The word is that the 8525 is also delayed until October 30th, 2007 and that the final delay is to complete training (oh brother like they did not know it was coming and could not have done this weeks ago). I was not expecting them to necessarily post the upgrade for downloading today, but between now and tomorrow (Microsoft's Mobile Exec. gives a Keynote at CTIA) I expected a more definite statement or word in a press release confirming it is on its way for the 3 AT&T phones. Still waiting . . . . I mean here is the golden opportunity for them to make a big announcement about it and so let's give them a chance and see what they do, the show opens officially tomorrow, although there is an event today. If they are going to announce the Blackjack II and show it tomorrow, they might discuss the Blackjack upgrade in the same Press Release.

Posted by: herbaliser

kevad are you at the show? you should just ask ATT reps there. Their portion of this morning's show is over, correct? what did they even talk about?

Posted by: CocheseUGA

I'm tired of AT&T's ****. Just tell us it's not coming and be done with it. I'll be on my next phone by the time they get off their asses.

Posted by: herbaliser

does anyone know what they talked about at the show this morning? if it wasn't the blackjack release what else could they spend a half hour on?

nevermind found it on the CTIA site. you can watch videos of the AT&T show, it was a bunch of crap. they need wm6 now

Posted by: iceninecynic

Yep, its going on all week I think, so hopefully we'll get lucky

Not at the show yet, I have RSVP'd to a related major press event tomorrow night but have calendar conflicts. I am trying to get my partner who lives in San Jose to go in my place if things do not change. If we go, we will ask what is the purpose in being so stubbornly quiet and not showing an effort to give concerned/affected customers some helpful communications on this type of matter. Its like they are saying to all of us:

"Its our world, you all just live in it!"

AT&T if you are listening, for goodness sakes, issue a press release or make an annoucement covered by the credentialed press at CTIA about Mobile 6 upgrades! Many people are patiently waiting, but if you want our loyalty, you have to demonstrate some sense of responsibility to your customers even if some matters need to remain undisclosed for competitive reasons. Its been a long time coming now, it is time! Not doing so, while you may feel is for good reason or unnecessary, is just demonstrating a dysfunctional company! How is that good for your beloved shareholders?

Posted by: herbaliser

keep us posted on the show if either of you guys go. At the third unofficial delay, its a little ridiculous. Good thing ill be on Rogers in canada in about 2 months

Unfortunately so, I figured it out though. No where in the instructions did I see where you have to change the USB connection type to Modem rather than Active Sync, WM6 is pretty slick.

Posted by: herbaliser

believe me if there were an xp computer at my house it would be on mine too. I talked to an AT&T rep who told me to wait til the end of the month, if it isnt out by then november 1st ill have the beta running. I posted these on the AT&T forum, only phones on the list that still run wm5.

For those of us following along... what's the advantages/disadvantages of choosing the BlackJack II vs. Motorola Q Global??

I've been holding out on switching over until the Moto Q, but now with the BJ2... I don't know... I might hold out for the BJ2...

Moto Q is wider (really wider)

I'm not really sure the specs of the BJ2. They both run WM6 (as any new device should), so basically it boils down to CPU speed, memory, etc.

I like the blackjack because it comes with a special edition java emulator that runs 3D games (where other emulators can't). I haven't heard anything about the MotoQ supporting it. As far as I know its only on the blackjacks.

The original blackjack has the standard about of memory and doesn't really require any more. If you happen to max your memory on a blackjack then you have way too many applications open. Of course more doesn't hurt.

I think the biggest difference (if there is any) would be the CPU. Currently i believe both devices have a 200mhz processor (in their original versions). While a faster processor isn't needed, again more doesn't hurt.

If I was on the fence between the MotoQ and the Blackjack2... I would closely look at
size: smaller = palmable / bigger = larger keyboard
CPU: more the merrier
Memory: more the merrier
Wifi or not

Honestly 3G is my choice for internet anyway, so wifi is useless to me. I have medium hands and the blackjack's keyboard has good tactile feedback. Again CPU and memory upgrades aren't needed but always welcome.

Overall I didn't see any thing special about either one of those devices to make me want to upgrade my original blackjack.

I think my next device will be the Samsung i780 (or equivalent). Currently I carry a PPC because of the touchscreen for my GPS apps. If I can get a cell phone that can handle those apps, then I can successfully converge the two and rid my burden of carrying extra equipment.

Great, thanks for the insight between the two!! I guess I'm just going to have to wait until they both get released so I can go see & compare how they feel in my hand

Thanks again!

Yea there is a website that allows one to enter the physical dimensions of various objects and it compares them side by side.

sizeme.com or something.

Its really helpful to get a good visual comparison between devices. From my understanding, I think the blackjack 2 is a millimeter taller, and the MotoQ was like 10mm wider (and a smudge fatter).

At this point, I think M$ is just going to sweep this under the rug, and ignore it. I won't be surprised if we NEVER hear a peep out of M$ or Samsung on this

as much as i'd like to blame microsoft or samsung, it's at&t that's at fault. microsoft released wm6 to manufacturers a long time ago and it's up to handset manufacturers/providers to do what they see fit with it..., samsung made a wm6 version for their oem i600 long time ago and we've already seen it running around in beta form for the i607/blackjack....

it's kinda like blaming dell for not having the latest graphics card drivers...

unfortunately for us, for at&t to release another version of firmware for a phone means: customization of software, testing of software, training their people for the software, supporting the software, dealing with upgrade issues/returns...etc etc.... clearly it's easy to see that this introduces time delays and possible headaches for at&t as it's them who release the firmware not microsoft or samsung. it is more of a problem/nuisance for them than it might be worth especially when they get no money out of it and in fact need to put more in.

that being said, i'm still hoping they'll release it i'm an optimist...

Sorry, meant to include AT&T in that list too. And I wasn't really throwing blame, I was just saying I think this has been drawn out so long, that all parties involved are simply going to ignore it, and hope it goes away, leaving us with no answers to anything.

Posted by: chudy2

yea...i certainly hope that's not the case but being on the other end for too long i can definately see this is not a hot business proposition for them outside some customer satisfaction (dissatisfaction?) which is always a financial tradeoff...hey ford was happy with pintos!

i dunno, that bj2 with gps built in sure looks tempting :P

Posted by: jk5598224

Second me on no real incentive for at&t mobility to release WM6 for BJ. Better to sell a new BJ2.
