Moto Pebl frustration

I recently bought an unlocked motorola pebl. I transferred my old sim (with contacts on it) into the new phone and added the remaining contacts to the phone's memory. the problem i'm having is that the phone doesn't recognize my contacts if the phone number format doesn't match exactly .
For example, let's say my contact's name is Bob and his number is entered as 9998887777. If he calls me and the network screens it as +9998887777, it doesn't come up on the outer screen as "Bob calling." It shows up as the number. Since I have +200 numbers in my phone, it's getting rather annoying.
Is there any way to fix this?

After reading and re-reading and re-reading xlr8's wiki, i finally found it:
Seem 0032, offset 3E, bit 4
now to fix this without bricking my phone...
