I know with my WM professional (pocket pc) phone you have to close out apps in the Memory settings menu. Do you have to do this for Smartphones too?

Yes--you do have to unless you want to leave it running in memory. One quick way to get to the task manager (either the built-in or 3rd party you install) is to assign the tmgr program to a speed dial.
