Unlocked Tmo DASH and upgrading to WM6

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

First please know that I used the Search tool to find what I was looking for and cannot find a definitive answer so now I am looking to fellow HoFoers for advice/help

I have an unlocked Tmo dash which i am using on Cingular and want to get the WM6 upgrade. if i upgrade using the Tmo Dash WM6 ROM...will it lock the phone again or not. I bought this unlocked and dont want to pay the $38 or so to get it unlocked again.

Please someone let me know if I can upgrade to Tmo WM6 without locking the device again.

thanks in advance.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 6.12) T-Mobile Dash)

Once you unlocked it, it will remain that way and you can do the wm6 install without worrying about it locking again.

Did you end up upgrading to WM6? How did it go? Phone still unlocked?

Scamit, I have done just what the op asked about. Installing wm6 will not lock a previously cid/sim unlocked phone. If you app unlocked your phone, you do need to do that again after a hard reset or flashing a new rom. WM6 works fine for me on my Dash, but there are others as outlined in various posts/threads here at HoFo that are having issues and some have rolled back to WM5.

Scamit, i have not done the upgrade as of yet. I will be doing it sometime later this week when my work schedulae has quieted somewhat . Probably Thursday or Friday.

I will definitely let you know if everything works out.

Im looking forward to using the WM6 OS. Im tired of WM5....no problems with it....just bored with it. Will be good to have some additional features and functions.

I am in a similiar situation - but have just bought a dash to run on cingular that has wm6 preloaded (thanks ebay).

Now I understand I need a bunch of manual configuration to get sms, wap etc going, but I also understand I have tmobile myfaves etc (which I don't want).

Can one just load a generic HTC WM6 generic rom?

To the best of my knowledge, it doesn't exist.

Well I actually had time last night to sit and do the upgrade to WM6. I must say Im always a little nervous when I do ROM changes with my phones....you never know when you might have a power outage or something else that causes interruption of the process and end up possibly bricking the phone.

Anyways.....everything went smoothly...now running WM6 beautifully and the best part is it did not lock my phone.

WHen I used to flash/flex Motorola phones i found that if you flex an unlocked moto with a flex that was locked to a carrier that it would lock sim lock the phone again.

So all in all it worked out great

Im getting my Tmobile branded WM5 dash tomorrow, so I will be upgrading to WM6 as soon as i get the phone. Now, do i just follow to instructions on the tmobile website? Nothing else to change?

Thanks

Posted by: john1027

Those are good instructions. If you haven't done so aleady, upgrade your copy of active sync to 4.5. You can get it from the MS mobile web site. Hope you enjoy the phone.

Posted by: scamit

Thanks. When i get the phone, i will upgrade active sync as well. You mean active sync on the phone or PC? I am going to use my iMac with the phone, hopefully it syncs ok with iCal. Cannot wait for the phone, my first smartphone ever. Hopefully I like it, been a huge fan of SE phones, currently using the w810i.

Yikes, I need a valid Tmobile Phone Number to download the WM6 upgrade. Anyone be kind enough to provide a valid number.

Thanks!!

Ok, got the phone and phone is great so far. I tried to upgrade it to WM6 and im running into a problem. Here is what I did,

Turned on the phone
Connected the phone to my Windows XP SP2
Established a Active Sync Connection, the phone even synced
Ran the Tmobile update utility
When it is trying to connect to the phone, it comes up with Error 202, Connection. The update utility cannot connect to your smartphone. Asks me to make sure the cable is connected, which it is.

I even tried connecting it with the phone off, still same problem. Any ideas?!?!

Thanks

Alright, with the phone off, it seems to be trying to connect to the phone longer and this time, I get an error message, ERROR 260. The readme file tells me to reset the phone and computer, which i did, same error comes up.

Are you sure your data cable can hold a connection (well obviously not right now)? There have been some data cables that don't work right if they're moved the slightest bit.

Posted by: scamit

Yeah that might have been the case as well because as soon as I moved my laptop it said connection failed and went into the recovery mode. In the end, it worked out well.

I like WM6, but it is noticeably slower than WM5. I like the Windows default theme with the larger fonts, looks really good. I do not want to overclock the CPU because my battery life will be decreased.

Scamit, im glad everything worked out for you concerning the upgrade to WM6. I agree with you that the OS seems slightly slower than WM5. Its not enough to bother me though.

One of the things I like alot is the fact that when I send an email it sends it right away rather than me having to select Send/Receive. There are some other pluses that i like as well

Posted by: scamit

Thanks for all the help guys. Phone is great, I have one question, how do I get the tmobile myfaves on the homescreen? I tried all the various themes, nothing is coming up.

Thanks
