I have a Cingular branded BJ. Should I get it unlocked? Will this allow me to get rid of all of the Cingular crap? Any notable losses/disadvantages to unlocking it?
Thanks.

If you are going to be using an AT&T account and sim, no need to sim unlock it. If you plan on using T-Mobile, yes you must sim unlock. If you plan on traveling overseas and want to use local sims from the location you are visiting, you should sim unlock. If you are going to tweak your device and possibly edit the registry and install uncertified 3rd party applications, you should application unlock it. You can fine-tune and tweak many of the Cingular/AT&T items that annoy you (eg startup and shut down screens/sounds) by following some of the advice you can find in the various threads and FAQs in the forums.

why not. since it's free to unlock anyways...do it.

Good point if he has enough time with at&t to get the code from them. It doesn't help him get rid of the "cingular crap" to which he referred though.
