Korean vs Japanese Phone - your preference?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: liquidjazz

since Softbank took over, they have introduced some non-japanese made phones like Samsung and HTC Hermes....

do you find these phones inferior to the japanese made phones in terms of quality and performance

do anyone own any of the Samsung phones offer by Softbank? how's the camera quality, overall value and speed compared to the big players like sharp and toshiba

I've owned a Samsung/SoftBank 707SC, and the build quality is not something to be proud of. The whole phone feels like it would break if you held it firmly, and the flip portion wobbled a bit after a couple months of use. The materials used for the phone is inferior to those made by Sharp.

Camera quality - No flash nor autofocus, grainy pictures
Overall value - Low cost, low functionality, decent looks
Speed - Menu browsing speed is similar on my 903 and 707, but photo-saving time is much faster on the 707.

Posted by: aw614

but shouldnt the samsung models compared more with the sharp 705sh, panasonic 705p, etc

I think whats nice about the samsungs, is they offer korean language, for a korean in japan, that is a nice feature to have

Posted by: liquidjazz

now wonder why these softbank Samsungs and HTC phones are available to other markets, and are unlockable with GSM?...because Softbank executives know these are garbage junk stuff and are not made by their country so they dont even care and willing to share with their world friends

i dont blame them to have a selfish mind....that's just human nature

why think Samsung will include Korean? because Samsung is a Korean company!

Posted by: Junglizt1210

Man, You're out of touch dude. Before Softbank took over, Vodafone had a few phones that weren't Japanese, like the 702NK... Even DoCoMo has had a few.

Get your facts right, before you go slamming anything that isn't Japanese and stop whining about how Japan gets the best stuff, please.

uuh, none of the us samsung models have korean on it, but the softbank models do \

edit: There is also a razr variation on docomo too and motorola is american

Posted by: ace587

First of the all the title is not even clear, the title should have been Korean vs japanese phones offered through Softbank

Its not a fair comparison obviously Softbank does not offer any Anycall/CYON/Sky phones in general

i'm gonna go with my standard theory of. don't buy korean products in any shape or form. if its LG,, it will break down. If its samsung, prepare for something half heartly made. (I've seen all the Samsung phones in US market, Canadian market and Asian market, its flooded with poorly made samsung phones.) Even the 707SC is like the Bell Mobility samsung phone A707. It looks the same, feels the same. Probably is the same internally as well, just that the 707SC has a more glossy look. Korean products are cheap, which usually is the reason why people buy them.

I'm happy to say, my standard is stay away from all Korean branded products. Stay away from Korean cars, cell phones and anything electronic. On a brighter note, Korean food is pretty good.

I've had the opposite experience, with korean products especially their mp3 players, and call me a fanboy if you want, but other than meizu from china, all of my mp3 players that I've bought were from korean. And with the features I want in an mp3 player they do everything I ask for with little problems. Probablems I had were refurbs (my sister had same model bnib and it worked prefect till this day), but other than that I swear by them in the mp3 market with their products. OGG, mp3, wma support.

and I also own a pantech phone, build quality wise I'd say its great for the last 6 months I've had it, other than the lower than average reception (mind you its 1900 only), its built really good, no creeks, smooth slide, etc.

I'll say this the korean stuff is catching up to japan fast, and is in the similar position to japanse products many years ago.

I second that, the korean mp3' player i have freezes all the time, and well... in terms of cell phones i have one word: Innostream.

i had that for 5 months before the thing died on me.

thank for some board user give out honest opinion of non japanese phone

now if the exec of japanese phone company see this they will and they will say we are always the greatest...our neighbour try to copy our trend our stlye our quality but they fail

Posted by: Junglizt1210

There's no such thing as failing. People like different phones for different reasons. I've loved Made in Japan products such as Sharp phones for a while, but I want to pick up a 707SC for style.

You can stop masquerading around the Sharp forum constantly preaching how great a country Japan is / boasting about how good Softbank is and better than Vodafone.

I couldn't agree more, kdm (Korean Domestic made/market) products are sub par with the jdm (jp domestic market) products. My experience lies with LG, and Samsung compared with Sharp, and Sony Ericsson. Their products are catching up as someone previously mentioned, but not quite up to par yet.
Now when it comes to most Kdm women however they are HOT.

Posted by: kmjmrq

sure korean women are hot... but can't trust their beauty all the time.. so many plastic surgeries these days... LoL..

HA! You couldn't be anymore correct. But if they look good after the surgical work they are still hot, no?

Posted by: kmjmrq

yeah.. they're still hot even after the surgeries.. technology is so good these days its very hard to tell who had one.. looks very natural..

Posted by: Maikurukun

As long as they don't end up messed up in the end because of the surgeries, i guess they are fine. It looks like we are going to have to go to Japan inorder to use Japanese phones now anyways.

Good point. Koreans make up the largest foreign population in Japan.

that noodle commercial is the best.. we all know which one I AM talking about.

back to topic, kinda:

I loved my 903sh. Probably the best... k, it is the best phone I have ever had. the 707sc isnt as bad as everyone says... my only complaint is the lack of attention to quality as in the Sharp model. 707sc is damn sexy tho.

@junglizt

buy my 707sc... nobody wants it :'(

Because the user interfaces of SE phones made for Europe are so different from regular Japanese ones that people hate figuring out how to work them. That's what killed them after the 802SE/V800. Also the fact that SE insists on keeping their high end phones as candybars, limiting both screen and keypad size.

They might have a chance now that they added proper send/end buttons and make sliders as well as candybars (sliders of which are getting more popular in Japan), but have heard nothing as such yet. User interface would also have to be improved a bit (eg 3G status would have to be indicated by '3G', not that stupid ripple/squiggle icon).

Yes, the Japanese are pedantic about their phone user interfaces, far more than their European counterparts.

As for SEMC Japan, I don't know why they don't supply phones for Softbank. Maybe their workload is cut out for them supplying to DoCoMo and au alone. Who knows. Maybe as Softbank gets more subscribers and DoCoMo continues to lose more, SEMC Japan may reconsider their allegiances.

What's a regular Japanese interface? I found the 903SH to be pretty much identical to the V630i from SE. Mind you, they are both Vodafone UK branded... but I still don't get what's different... screen shots?

Posted by: yangj08

I really wish that SEMC Japan would sell their phones internationally- they always seem so much better than the ones that SEMC Europe comes up with (take the SO903i for example- Memory Stick *and* microSD, something that SEMC Europe seems unwilling to do).

Have you seen the K850i? MicroSD/M2 in one slot.

yeah, but how long did that take? way to long, same with every other sony product out there with their overpriced memory. At least their rebranded minolta slr cameras use cf cards

Posted by: yangj08

Fair enough- that does lead me to question 2. When will this appear in a clamshell/flip phone? I'm being too idealistic, I suppose- better to just move to Japan so that I can stop complaining, I guess (or wait for the hackers/unlockers).

Posted by: ace587

casio exilim phones blow the k850i out of the water, so its nothing compared to it

Posted by: simplex123

yeah w53ca is crazy.. awesome camera.. with a hugee vga screen

Posted by: yangj08

Oh yeah- that's something I want to see in the US. Even if that doesn't happen (I'm thinking that if it does it'll be on KDDI Mobile) I still want something like that just to play around with.

On the keypad side, one with send and end keys, a clear/delete button and other function keys in addition to the number pad. On the UI side, take a look at recent DoCoMo or KDDI au phones to see a Japanese style interface.

Sharp's Softbank/worldwide phones actually build off of SE Europe's earlier UIs so they're not a proper example. It's old PDC phone UI though is a good example.

Posted by: AL9999

DoCoMo SH904i (Sharp):

DoCoMo N904i (NEC):

KDDI au W51CA (Casio):

The common attributes here are the always visible standby bar at the top, the numbered menu items in the middle, softkey placeholders at the bottom and arrows to show where the cursor can be moved in the menu bar at the bottom (not on the Casio in this case though). Also icons for things like reception and battery are standardised (reception always being the upside down coathanger masthead). There's also similarity in where menu items are placed and such, eg settings menu starting with call cost and display backlight.

Not in night pics (Xenon K850i vs LED Casio W53ca)

But everything else the W53ca wins

Posted by: Shion Uzuki

But... SE makes phones for KDDI! (W44S, W51S)

Posted by: yangj08

None of which we see in the US. I honestly wonder why- their CDMA offerings to the US made it look like they weren't even trying. If they gave Sprint/Verizon what they gave KDDI they'd still be in the CDMA business... I think.
