8525 Discontinued according to sales rep.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: thePhilz

Walked into the local cingular store to pick up a 8525 and was told that it has recently been marked discontinued and that they havent been getting any in. If I still wanted one they could get them possibly from another store. He also didn't know what they were replacing it with.

So is it not the time to get the 8525? I just wanted a phone that worked -anywhere- in the world (japan too, as i go there often, and thats the only cingy phone that does...). browsed web, got e-mail, did multimedia things, and maybe even skype... So any other suggestions maybe?

Or does anyone know what they are replacing it with... or could it just be they going to put WM6 on it?

Thanks in advance,
Philz

Seems so. Cingular 8525 is being discontinued and being replace by AT&T 8525. Just a difference in SKU. 8525 is still here.

ewww.. i just ordered one off premier and I would have been upset if this was the case because once it discontinues the price usually drops as well...

Aren't they still free off the Premier site?

I know when I looked on the Premier site, the Cingular 8525 you had to pay but the AT&T 8525 was free.

Yep, that deal is good thru 6/21.

Last I knew the HTC Kaiser will be the successor to the 8525 (aka the 8525 "refresh") and it's set for August/September (that means November for those of you who know how things get delayed, LOL.)
It's not clear if that will discountinue the 8525, or if they will continue to sell it. After all they did not discontinue the 8125 when the 8525 came out. Either way the 8525 a minimum of a 3-4 months before it has a replacement.

Either way the 8525 is still well worth getting and far from obsolete unless the kaiser has something that you must have (like HSUPA?)

I was browsing with the 8525 on 3G speeds and it honestly makes a difference. I rarely get to test 3G on PDAs until today. I loaded "myspace" in no time. I am not a "myspace'r," but I usually use that way to find out if pages are going to load quick. I also test out the sites I go to like, chase.com, HoFo, engadgetmobile.com, boygeniusreport.com, and a couple of other sites and noticed a big difference when loading it in a non-3G store. It made me actually think about getting this device, especially when I get ride of my Treo on Sprint.

Edit: Oooops, forgot to put my main reason for replying to this topic. The representative did not lie, you probably had the Cingular 8525, which is actually discontinued. The new shipment, new sku is for the AT&T 8525.

I just realized the 8525 is free after adding to cart. I kept on thinking the price would have been on the page. Is this the case for a lot of phones, where I have to actually add to cart?

If you were responding to my post (and I'm not sure even were) when I said "HSUPA" I meant HSUPA which the Kaiser appearently has, not HSDPA which the current 8525 and others have.
HSUPA has faster upload speeds (U for Upload.) So while the phone is capable, I don't know if/when AT&T will support it.
Just wanted to make that clarification from my post either way. I'm not sure it's a feature worth waiting for at this point in time.
I assume the other benefits to the Kaiser (besides processor/memory) would physical improvements.

Nope I wasn't replying to it. But HSUPA is actually being tested. If someone had a phone capable of it, they would actually be able to use it at times they are testing it. For example, where I work does not have 3G, but the AT&T call center that's a couple of blocks away from mine, has 3G, but as soon as you step outside, it's gone. As soon as all the towers have been upgraded, it's all downhill from there in reference to upgrading from 3G to 4G to 5G.

Sweet! I get giddy just thinking about it. Give me bandwidth, baby!

Is there anyway I can get it for free if I want to upgrade? I am a cingular FAN customer also and have a business account with discount.

Yeah, it's a bit tricky. The AT&T 8525 price is "supposed" to change to zero after adding the qualifying data and voice plans that you are required to have in order to get it for free. However, there seems to be a glitch (at least with my company's FAN) that it was already showing the price as zero in the cart when I didn't add the plans yet. Maybe that's how it is for other company's FANs. But I think in the end they will catch you if you don't add the appropriate plans during the verfication process.

It is free if you get a new account, I already have an account and still in contract so I was not eligable for the free 8525 because mine was an upgrade..

Were you starting a new line or upgrading? For me I was starting a new line, which would be the reason it didn't show that for me. If you were upgrading an existing line, it may already know you had the qualifying plans.

Posted by: knighthawks97

It was a new line for me too, just switched from T-mobile. I was in the same situation you were in. It showed some price like ~$409 or something at first on the phone selection page. Then after I added it to the cart, it was a $0.00 price.

In my post, I was referring to seeing the $0.00 price before adding the required data/voice plans, but after adding it to the cart.

So you ported your number over? I need to know how smooth that process is or if I should just request a new number. I may purchase it tomorrow. Is there an option for overnight shipping?

Is the OP sure the rep didn't say the 8125? Those are practically gone from the stores.

I don't have access to the my company's premier site right now, but I'm not sure if they had an option for overnight. I just checked the regular AT&T site, and I don't see an option for overnight, the only option is defaulted to "free priority shipping." I remember on the premier site, it was free 2 day FedEx shipping. So the shipping options are a bit different between the two sites, you may just have to check your company's premier site.

Porting the number was easy. You'll have your old number with your old carrier until you actually call in and activate your new AT&T phone once you get it. There is a down time for about 30 minutes total during the actual process. My new 8525 didn't "completely" port using the automatated process, so I had to call customer service and they took care of it in about 5 minutes right over the phone.

I didn't request a new number because I didn't want to hassle with contacting everybody I know and update them with a new number.

Just in time. My T-Mobile contract is up in November.

Two weeks ago I was told by two stores in Massachusetts that the 8525 was discontinued. I wanted to swap mine out before my 30 days ended but couldn't.
