Is there a cid unlock for the DOPOD C730 yet?

No there isn't, although their IS a generic Jump-SPL program that could be modified to work on the Cavalier if someone knew how to do it.

Are the keypad issues resolved now?

I know I'm a little late to the game, but what keypad issues?

I've yet to notice any.

Hey I just got mine this weekend.

Ive been having this weird thing with the sound. Randomly it would stop working. Like i try WMP or the audio manager thing and it just wont work...its on normal mode and everything. This is after Ive had the phone on silent or vibrate for a while. I have to turn the phone on to get the sound to work again. Anyone know why?

And anyone know how to get rid of the t9 on the bottom of the screen?

Posted by: JonSev

ATT MMS Help:

I tried the settings on page 43 and still cant get picture messages from my friends. Anyone want to type what they have on their phone?

And the sound problem is still happening...although I think it might be only when I turn my alarm on? Could that be it?

I keep searching this thread for signs of a link or attachment for a firmware update to resolve the keyboard issue. I tried several HTC sites (regions) and support numbers, they are all oblivious to this model still. I can't register my serial number (the site(s) say its invalid). Does anyone have a firmware update for this device? I am desperate, I have 4 of these things and an app written in .net Compact Framework that doesn't work, and multiline text boxes are not an option.

Please help me

Posted by: bocastephen

Can anyone post the latest firmware on this board?? I can't register with my serial, and HTC wants photos of my phone, the box, the IMEI sticker behind the battery, a sample of my blood, and a snip of my hair before they will let me register. It's just ridiculous.

I tried Yahoo Go! last night and I have the problem with my phone for sure - I'd really like to know if the latest patch fixes this, and be able to download the patch without needing to prove to HTC I own the phone.

A bit of advice, ROM on xda-developers is for dopod C730, if you try it on HTC S630 you will probably brick your device. For the moment there is no CID unlocker for cavalier so Dopod ROM on Dopod device - HTC ROM on HTC device.

Cheers

Most of Dopod C730 don't have that kind of problem, usualy HTC S630 users have complained about text input problems, so I don't know - sorry

Good catch... thanks for that. I just assumed it was a Dopod.

No text inputting issues with my C730 either

seems like I have the only Dopod 730 with the text input issue

been using my HTC Kaiser mostly and finally decided to use my s630 some. what page of this thread has the settings for att in usa?

windows update wont seem to work on it even using wifi

Posted by: Quatre

btw my INvisible Shield screen protector finally came 2 months later. luckily it came after they refunded me for being so delayed. they claimed usps lost it not them but whatever.

main problem is, it doesnt' even fill the whole screen. its supposed to be custom cut to fit the HTC s630 and yet its too small for the screen. very unimpressed and disappointed but luckily I didn't pay.

the clear smoked greay plastic casing thing i got for it though ends up being decent to protect the edges and actually now the clip works well enough and its even smaller then aholser as its just a clip. just teh phone has a round clear thing to slide onto and lock into the clip so when you take phone off clip it has that on the back.

but with the pocketsolutions or whatever that site was not having the cavalier clutch holster anymore and nowhere else carrying a holster for the s630 its the best i could find.

main problem now is getting it set up to work properly on att in the us and the fact that i'm so spoiled by my tilt/kaiser now that its hard to back to smartphone and the s630.

kind of sucks i paid ove 500 for it and never used while waiting for screen protector and used my tilt more. i can sell my blackjack now i guess but might not get much use out of the cava till summer when i'll prob get a new thin smart or ppc phone :/

still want to try to get this htc s630 setup properly though and give it more of a chance as it is definately thinner then the Kaiser.

The dealer we bought the S630's from let me trade one for a Dopod C730. It does have the similar issue with the keyboard, the S630 beeped on the "number" keys and the C730 just does the numbers when using my .net Compact Framework VB application. Just so you know using Windows Live is not a good test, it worked on both models. I have tried .net CF 2.0 SP1,SP2, and 3.5 beta nothing changes it. Applying the .708.7 firmware from the HTC Hong Kong site does not fix it (it came with .708.5). Side note the C730 is much faster than the S630 even thought there is no logical reason other than the firmware.

There's a cab available on this thread... for me it's page 2 (I show 30 posts per page).

There's also manual mms settings on my page 1

1. go to settings - clear storage = hard reset
2. go to ftp.xda-developers.com, locate cavalier (uploads section) folder, ROM is there.
3. BB Connect, you'll find it on Dopod site (you'll have to register with valid IMEI).

Food for thought:

The S630 / C630 aren't the only phones experiencing this problem as indicated by the MSDN thread.

What's interesting though is that on Oct 27th, the following post was made to the MSDN thread:
Quote:
I downloaded this update for the PPC6800 (Sprint Mogul) from the link below. This did fix the problem with my .netcf app and I can now type normal with my QWERTY keyboard.

http://www.america.htc.com/support/...-downloads.html

I know its a long shot for those who have the phone but is it possible to check what the update changes and possibly reverse engineer a patch for the S630?

Additionally, I'm wondering why HTC isn't officially disclosing this device? I'm interested in buying one but I'm simply shocked that theres no support nor is it listed on their website - you need to play with the url to even find a description --> http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_s630.htm
Whats going on here?!

I have followed this thread for months now but the support (and keypad issue) issue is why I did not get one! It seems HTC is not pushing the phone at all for whatever reason. I experienced that once before with the Qtek 8500 where I could not register it anywhere for support or ROM upgrades, and I am not going there again.

You could always buy a really sweet Dopod C730 At least it's recognized/supported.

isn't dopod a subsid of HTC anyways?

HTC decided to release only in certain regions and within those regions it's a dopod... it's on the website, it's supported, and you could register it... I don't see a big difference...

As a matter of fact Dopod exists only on letters (HTC boght all the shares earlier this year).
As I heared "this device is made for the Asian market", now Dopod operates in the Far East and AustralAsia, for the rest of Asia is HTC S630.
As for support, Dopod site and HTC Europe both support it. I'm registered on Dopod HK site - english version with my dopod and on HTC europe with my TyTN and the same Dopod and I have both devices on HTC site.

Doesn't matter one bit for those of us that purchase 1 device every 6-10mths to LAST! Problem with the Dopod brand and it IS a brand to HTC now, is that firmware updates are VERY slow .... common 840 posts and just 1-2 (not even sure if its 2 as apposed to just 1) firmware updates?

What bothers me is this phone is incredibly designed world class keypad from what i'm told and would be a HUGE success if HTC would go all out on this. But it seems the HTC S740 - the CDMA qwerty with a 2MP and WiFI uses a new more efficient Qualcomm cpu. I'm hoping and PRAYING they'll go ALL out with a GMS/EDGE/3G/WiFi/GPS version for the rest of us. This would be prime because if this Andriod thing takes off then its "hopeful" we'll be able to install the firmware onto it. Even more so is the Cavalier provides so much more consumer (end user) applications and features than a BB Curve ( 8300*8310*8320).

So I hear that some ppl have had success with GMM2.0 My Location if they have appunlock applied to their phone.

Anyone know if this cab will work on the Cavalier (Dopod)?

Posted by: Quatre

anyone know the exact screen dimensions of the HTC S630? Stupid Invisible shield by ZAGG company produced a screen protector for it that is too small and doens't fill the screen so no they want to know from me the exact screen size of the HTC S630 and the size of their protector to send me a new one.

I dont know why they dont know the size of the screen of a device they sell a screen protector for or why they dont know the size of the screen protector they currently sell. Its like they are trying to get me to prove it doesnt' fit when I can see just by putting it on that it doesn't fill the scree and centering it leaves exposed screen on all 4 sides.

Does anyone know if the TCPMP (Core player) player will run on the C730?

Posted by: panflute

I need to be more specific. I want to upgrade my Dash S620 to the Dopod C730. I have the following apps installed on my DASH (running WM5):

TCPMP – media player – plays music, movies, etc.
Streamer – internet TV and radio
World Time
IBE File Manager
Smart Explorer
Resco Radio
MS Voice Commander (can dial phone book entries via bluetooth voice command)
No Limit – casino card game
Internet Radio
Skype
Bt Audio – can send audio from media player and movies to the bluetooth
Virtual Earth – satellite maps
Smurf – detect mobiles phones
wmIRC – chat program
Gentimer – stopwatch
Dash Weather
X Bar
Opera
Pacman
TV Pro
Handi TV
IE 6
Custom home screens
Audio Notes
Newsbreak
Pocketmusic
SK Tools
Sprite Backup – backs up entire registry

What I use the most are TCPMP player (for movies), and MS voice command with my bluetooth.

So I am wondering how many of these apps installed on my Dash will run or not run on the C730 with WM6?

Any comments appreciated.
thanks

Hello everyone. I just recently bought a used Dopod C730 from a fellow HOFO member. I was so excited to finally receive it until I tried to connect it to my WIFI network. There's no option to connect to WIFI in Comm Manager. I looked at settings->connection, no wifi or wlan option. Before I go crazy, I would like to ask your help in fixing this. ROM is the latest one (1.16.708.7). It is CSL 1010 branded.

Thanks in advance.

Posted by: HShortt

@panflute
All your apps should run fine.

@Lukas_Joseph
Open comm manager from the start menu, there should be 8 options. Option 4 turns on/off wifi.

I'm going to sell my Dopod c730 with a bundle of stuff if anyone would be interested let me know.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately, I only have 7 options in COMM Manager. I referred to the manual and I'm missing the WIFI option. Also at Settings>connection, I don't get any options for WLAN at all.

I am beginning to think that this phone is crippled and the seller didn't fully disclosed this. I'm hoping there might be a registry tweak or what not to enable this function.

Posted by: HShortt

Well you could always re-install the same ROM again. Any modifications that the person who sold it to you has made, will then be overwritten with the fresh install.

Well, I might have the unfortunate luck of having a Dopod C730 *without* WIFI. There is no way to turn on WIFI at all. I only get 7 options in Comm Manager even though the manual shows 8 options. I am missing the WLAN button. Settings->Connections also doesn't show any options for WIFI settings. It has the current ROM 1.16.708.7. I reloaded the ROM with negative results. I tried to load the WWE ROM 1.16.707.7 to see if it will fix it but it's CID locked so no go on that route. There's no CID unlock for the Cavalier.

I am not savvy enought to dig through registries so I guess this is a very expensive lesson learned for me. The previous owner claim that he never thought it had wifi to begin with although the box he sent it with clearly states it, with picture even.

My question to everyone is:

Is there anyway to verify that there's a WIFI hardware installed, short of opening the unit itself?

Do a hard reset and/or reload the latest ROM and see what happens.

Already reloaded the latest one. Still no wifi.

I'm still standing by for a CID unlock so I can load the previous one to see if that one works.

Are you referring to me who is having a problem with my *Dopod C730* or to HShortt who is selling his *Dopod C730*?

I'm trying to understand why I would need to post a picture of the type of HTC I'm using when I've already mentioned for a couple posts what type of HTC Cavalier I have (which is a Dopod C730).

Posted by: panflute

Well god my Dopod C730. Maybe I should have bought the C730 here.
The phone is OK, but a few things are in Chinese - like the network connection utility, and the voice command setup which is also talking Chinese to me. Also when I hit the voice command button on the left side of the phone, phone notes recording comes up instead to voice command. I have MS Voice command, but a little afraid of deinstalling the included app.
Also MS Voice app lets you assign the command button, but i don't know which is the RECORD button (maybe the 2 apps conflict) or know whoch button is app1 or app2.......

Posted by: panflute

What I've noticed so far:
The screen in the C730 is brighter.
The speaker sounds fuller -less tinnier.
I like the plastic casing.
I like the keys, but they did flatten them out a bit. The backlighting seems brighter so the key are easier to see - also they are colored white so that probably helps.
The tab over the mini usb port seems delicate.
TCPMP player works fine.....maybe not as clear picture, but there are a lot of settings to play with the video.
Haven't played with the Jogger yet.
Nowif I can just get the voice command working and remove the Chinese....
:-)

Posted by: panflute

Call quality seems to be a bit better, as does the wf-fi reception.

Posted by: panflute

Here is the thread from the Dash forum:
To switch to the good ol' List view, you need to use a registry editor and change a setting in two different locations:

HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Start Menu
HKEY_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\MS Start

In both locations, you need to modify the GridView value from 1 to 0. It is important that you change the setting in BOTH locations.

If you change the first location without changing the second one, when you navigate into one of the Start menu folders (Accessories or Games for example), the Start menu will turn into a grid again when you come out of that folder - and will stay like that until you reboot your phone again.

If you change the second location but not the first one, the Start menu will revert to the Grid View when you reboot the phone.

There is no grid view in the local_machine entry.....I just changed the start menu grid view from 1 to 0, and it worked. Now instead of the large icons,
the start menu becomes a list.

Posted by: panflute

I have been unable to get BT Audio to work in the C730 - it will not send
audio to the BT headset as it did in the DASH.

I also still havent figured out the voice command.

Does anyone know how to increase the time the keyboard backlight stays on?

I am trying to adjusted the Zoom rate when in camera mode using the Nav control Up/Down as laid out in the manual, but it does not adjust the zoom rate, it stays at 1.0. When I press the nav controler up or down it just beeps.

the nav control pressed left or right does adjust the lighting level though...

any help would be appreciated.

Derek

Posted by: thessaly

To use zoom, first press 2 and then the up or down keys to zoom accordingly.

Posted by: JonSev

That changes the resolution size for me.

Why would they let you zoom in on smaller resolutions and not in larger? Seems backwards to me.

Posted by: panflute

There is a new ROM update on the HTC site.
No indication of what changes were made.
My version is 1.16.708.5
New version is 1.16.708.7

Not sure if it is worth it.
Also I don't know what they mean bu this:
1. Please use the previous release of 2577 folder for Dopod International C730

Usually NASA is the most stable web site, however I am getting this message
in WMPlayer: "Cannot play any items in the playlist". Many of the links will now not work....don't know what happened. Maybe I'll try Opera.

anyone with a Dopod get myLocation (google maps) to work?
if so, what's the trick? I did the various appsunlocks and it still doesn't work

After using the c730 in the morning, having it in my pocket most of the day, next thing I know this is what my screen looks like. It's hard to tell it's cracked? b/c the exterior glass/case is fine. Any of you got ideas/experiences for what to do? Contact DOPOD???? F***!!!

Posted by: panflute

These phones are delicate. It looks cracked to me - a common occurance. They have replacement screens for the DASH on Ebay, but I would not attempt to replace it myself even if the parts are the same. It will have to go to Dopod, not under warranty.

I think it may require GPS. If not, there is an option in GMaps that will allow you to set your location.

huh?

the mylocation with gmaps 2.0 uses cell sites for triangulation and acts like a quasi gps...

is there a way to get rid of the call info screen at the end of a call?

say phone is locked
get call - answer
finish call
instead of showing call info screen go back to homepage.

current process is to unlock press cancel to get to homepage then relock

is this a registry hack?

Ah, I just installed this on my S710... very slick. Is it possible that the cell towers in your area are not in the GMaps database? There was something about that in one of the screens for the MyLocation...

.

Posted by: panflute

It seems that the HTC S620 and Dopod C730 screens are the same part & they are available both on Ebay and other cell phone parts sites.

Posted by: panflute

I bought this off Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/leather-cover-f...1QQcmdZViewItem

The leather case with belt clip is great-good quality and fit. Also included is a black silicon skin case, which I like around the house. Also comes with a very high quality screen protector (you only get 1 chance to install it onto the phone)...
for about $24 this was a great deal.

Came from Hong Kong, took about 10 days to arrive in Florida but worth the wait.

For the moment Skype supports only messaging on Arm 9 processors (hermes and cavalier have the same processor ARM 9), for voice calls we need ARM 11.

I have recently just purchased a Softbank X02HT (aka Dopod C730/HTC s630) and am also having the same text input issues in applications like Yahoo Go and Windows Live Search. The ROM on my phone came installed with the same version as other users have reported on their Dopod C730:

ROM Version: 1.16.708.7

All applications are installed on the device. Anybody found any fixes yet??

Also, is there a separate ROM for the Softbank? Or does it always come with the Dopod version?

Dopod C730 vs Softbank X02HT whats the difference between the two. I would order from plemix.com

So is there any major difference or are they same phone? Also i would then later flash it to the HTC rom if one is available. Sorry i didnt really read through the thread, just skimmed the last few pages. Also they got the US 3G bands correct?

Thanks

All three phones have the same bands: quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and triband (850/1900/2100) UMTS/WCDMA.

I think the only real difference between the two phones are the colors and also which countries they're set-up for; the Dopod being setup with English/Chinese and the Softbank setup with Japanese/English.

I'm buying the Softbank X02HT White from Plemix next week myself.

Same here, the Plemix Softbank model is way cheaper then the other ones.

Anyways, i read a lot of quality problems with the HTC Cavalier, do they exist with the Softbank model as well?

Also, what color you getting? i was thinking white but im leaning over the dark grey color

Posted by: Vertigo1md1032

I have fixed the .Net issues with both Windows Live Search and Yahoo!Go on both a 'broken' c730 as well as an s630. Softbank should work just fine too. Testing time is over though now, so you guys get to enjoy my 45 minutes of work. All I need is a place to upload it. I hear there's a 14kb limit on this site so somebody tell me how to upload it on another site. I do programming, not web uploading and such. I'll be back on later to check in.

Maybe you can use megaupload.com or rapidshare.com to upload the file and post the URL here.
Many people here, including me, will be very happy if your fix finally solves this issue

I like the dark grey one with red lettering but the White one looks so much more exclusive; so I'm going for the white one.

And I'm hoping the Softbank model doesn't have any of the quality issues the Cavalier has but then again I haven't found many forums with members owning the X02HT.

Alright everybody, here is the fix!

How did you fix this? It looks like you replaced the keyboard driver dll (at least that's what I'm presuming the keybddr.dll is). Where did this new file come from?

Posted by: jonnywifi

I'm interested in the origin of the file too, but I am more interested in the fact that it finally fixed the input problems!!!! Today was the first day I was able to type my destination into Windows Live Search - and I was just getting used to the speech recognition...

Thank you for taking the time to find a working dll and to post it. If you did write the contents of the dll, cudos to you for that too.

Have other people been able to test this - does it in fact work? Any side effects? Kudos to the OP if this thing is the real deal!!

yup but its okay. Me and you will have one soon

Vertigo's keyboard fix is definitely the real deal. The only thing I've noticed, but doubt is related, is the fonts on some of my e-mails appears to be lighter.

I have to say the Cavalier (Dopod C730) has been such an unreliable device it does not surprise me when things just change by themselves... I've had 5 different occasions where I go to use it only to find it is completely hung, then when after I pull the battery to reset it, it comes up in Chinese and I have to start all over again... It's the only WM device I've had with such serious reliability problems.

I give the keyboard input fix from Vertigo1md1032 two thumbs up!

Jon

Posted by: Aggie

Can this fix be "uninstalled"? Is it as simple as "removing programs" through the start menu. Will the original files that are replaced be reverted back?

Posted by: Vertigo1md1032

No the fix is permanent and can not be removed without a hard reset. I understand your reluctance to install anything '3rd party' but trust me (and the rest of the guys that have already fixed their phones), you won't want to uninstall it.

In other news,
I'll be posting a new version soon that comes with a free copy of Ubuntu, OpenOffice, Gator, MyWebSearch, and one of those pictures where you are supposed to find the one thing wrong with it (but in the end it just scares you).... I'm just kidding. The file is clean and it does what I said it would. If you don't want to use it, that's cool too.

Origin of the file-
I tweaked the file with one of my friends that works for HTC Asia. Actually she did most of the work, I just tested it for her. We're also working on a fix for battery issues. She has the s630 (I have the c730), and we're both tired of waiting on everyone else to resolve these issues.

In the last year or so, I've considered getting a new phone about a dozen times, due to problems I've had with this one (crashes, hard resets, memory cards being automatically wiped, keyboard issues, etc.), but it really is one of the top five devices on the market. I will be keeping mine until the new Windows Mobile 6.1 rolls out, and you didn't hear it from me, but there may be an update to 6.1 for THIS DEVICE at some point in the future.

Just passing on what I know.

Wow, I've been using my Dopod for about 3 months now and I haven't experienced any of the problems you've described... However, I'm kind of a light user...

Maybe it's the programs that you've installed that is causing the problems.

I have
opera mini (use daily)
facade (always on)
fizz weather (always on)
resco explorer / registry (use occasionally)
resco photo (use occasionally)
google maps (use weekly)
slick (use daily)

and I have push mail on (always on)

The only problem that I have is a lot of dropped calls...not sure if it's the phone or at&t coverage.

Thank you for this hard work - but - I installed the fix, and tested it with Yahoo GO! and I still have the same issue.

There weren't any install instructions - once the file is downloaded, how do I install it? I just took a guess and did the following...

downloaded the file, extracted, saved as .zip, renamed .zip to .cab, copied to phone, selected the .cab file and it did some type of install. I restarted the phone...but still have the same keyboard problem.

try this:
- download the .zip to your pc
- extract the .cab from the .zip and copy the .cab to your phone
- run the .cab with File Explorer to install it
- restart your phone (or shut it off, then turn it back on)

it should work after that

That worked! Yahoo GO! works properly too. I have no idea what I did before, but it's OK now. Thank you.

Can you tell us if the Softbank model has the same problems as the HTC version?

Also what are the problems you have been facing?

Yes, it's basically the same - my softbank is loaded with the Dopod ROM. The problem I was having was the same as everyone else, which was the text input problems in certain applications such as Yahoo Go and Windows Live Search. But I'm happy to report that I applied the fix and it's all good now! Loving the phone!

Posted by: MalPraktiz

My S630 is now problem free regarding the keyboard input issues in .NET CF based apps. Now if only this the antenna could be fixed. In big buildings and remote locations where I get 1-2 bars on my other WM devices I keep getting the darn "No Service" message on this device.

I'm glad you guys have enjoyed the fix. I do have one favor to ask in return though for all the work (and I don't know if HF will even let me post this)... Can somebody zip up a bunch of programs for the c730 and MegaUpload it for me? I mean *several cabs for games, others for tweaks (other than my own of course), various programs (weather would be nice), and such. I would really appreciate it. And yes I am sure that it's posted somewhere on some other site, but I had to wipe my c730 several times during testing and like an idiot, I didn't make a backup. Thanks in advance.

Hey Vertigo1md1032, for starters, here are some links to some Cabs for the HTC Cavalier:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=351462

Also - does the text input fix you created work in all applications? A user reported in another forum that it didn't fix the problem in applications like FuseSP and PocketDOS...

okay so does the softbank model unbranded or there is some softbank/vodafone branding in the software? Since there is no CID unlocking will we able to upgrade the firmwares or even unbrand these suckers?

is there a way to change the sensitivity of the light meter on the s630. i've found that the keypad backlight doesn't come on until its crazy dark. i've been just putting my thumb over the sensor to fool it into coming on.

Just turn off the light sensor - that way the key backlight will always come on regardless of the amount of ambient light....
I think its somewhere under settings-
I prefer it that way since its easier to see the keyboard in most situaltions.

Can someone tell me how to hard reset the phone (cold boot)? I'm looking for a key sequence at power on...my phone is hanging during the boot process at the moment ;/

Update: power on while holding both softkeys....thanks to the poster on page 48 or so!

Posted by: Vertigo1md1032

Hard reset s630, c730.

1. Power off phone. I.E. Pull the battery if you can't do a graceful shutdown.
2. HOLD left and right soft keys and turn device back on.
3. When device comes up with Red, Green, Blue bars, and the prompt, let go of the softkeys and select 'Yes' by pushing the 'Y' key on your keypad. Give it few minutes and you'll be back to factory.

Thank you again for your hard work - my Dopod is now happily running Yahoo Go! and MSN Live Search. Is there any news or ETA on a battery fix? This is probably issue number one for this phone. HTC should be paying you for these fixes as you're doing the work they should have done BEFORE the product was shipped.

I bought a 2200mah battery from a ebay seller in hong kong...came with an extended battery door and a quality screen protector all for $20 delivered. A GREAT value and the battery lasts forever. Also got a black silicon case and cut out a section for the extended battery door. All of this has worked great for me.

I have a Plantronics bluetooth, and ever since I applied a fix someone posted, bluetooth only works on outgoing calls....

I am hoping a fix appears sometime so i dont have to reset the phone.

I just upgraded to the AT&T (HTC) Tilt, so now I am selling my Dopod C730 and all accessories as a package on Ebay for $450, if anyone is interested. Great case, screen protector, extra standard battery & 2200mah battery (w/ back cover), phone/battery charging cradle, 2 sync cradles, and wired headset. Ebay #280194856233

Yes, I got it late Friday evening (after I got home from work) and have been fooling with it ever since. In regards to branding; it's very light - only the carrier name on the front, the model name on the back, the Softbank settings regarding data, and Softbank's S-Mail. You will have to manually add the data settings for at&t WAP, IMS, and the Medianet proxy but those are simple.

So far, I think it's perfect for me; provides all the features I liked about the 8525 (Wi-Fi, dedicated push email, and QWERTY keypad) with the things I loved about the V9 (it fits into my pocket without making a noticeable decent, it's not too heavy or bulky, it's highly customizable, and it's sleek and well-designed).

I've only had a few issues with it really; it comes application locked and the MMS system is worthless. The first problem of it being app locked wasn't that big a deal when I first started installing programs to it but when I wanted to install the HTC Home program or something like SRS WOW HD audio enhancer it would tell me I had insufficient rights to do so. A quick Google (and some Babelfish translations) later and I found a guide to app unlock the phone - which worked flawlessly. The second problem isn't so easy; from some reason Softbank uses an MMS system/program which is incompatible with most of the world. So you can't send or receive (I don't really know about the second part...no one sends me MMS) MMS at all. I've tried every hack listed to get an alternative MMS program on the phone (even Asukal's guide for the X01HT) but to no success. One workaround I've begun using is just emailing the picture, video, etc. to the recipient's phone (via the xxxxxxxxxx@cingularme.com address where the x's are their phone number).

I haven't been able to drive to Raleigh or Charlotte (the nearest 3G areas in North Carolina until Fayetteville goes online sometime this year) so I can't tell you about it's ability to handle at&t's 3G but I'm quite sure it will. If I get time next week I'll definitely find out for you.

So other than those two niggles I think this is a great phone and I'm glad I bought it.

But I will look into it further.

Hi Keiri. Thank you for the review of this model. I'm considering purchasing one too, but have been hesitant with concerns about the keyboard layout and potential system language problems. Does the keyboard have the English qwerty? I couldn't see any detailed pictures to see if the letter and symbol mapping is similar to the English-only language models. Is there any difficulties with the keyboard? Also does it boot up with Japanese or is there an option to pick English? I want to make sure I can navigate to set the language to English if needed.

look in the first couple of pages of this thread... there's instructions on how to change it to english.

Posted by: thessaly

I've got a Softbank X02HT as well, and there is a bit of an issue with the keyboard mapping where the characters triggered by hitting FN+Z (to get the asterisk, for example) doesn't quite match up or is one button off. Can anyone else with the phone verify this? Otherwise, I've had no problems with using it in English.

Keiri, can you share how and what you used to unlock the phone?

The Keyboard comes with QWERTY English and there are only 4 keys with kanji/hiragana/katakana (Japanese letters) on them; as such the key/symbol mapping seems very similar to the Cavalier/C730. The only difficulty with the keyboard I've run into is tonight when I accidentally switched the font/key language to Japanese while the phone was in my pocket (LOCK THIS PHONE WHEN IT'S IN POCKET!) and I easily changed back by hitting FN+the fontstyle key (to the right of the space bar) and selecting English Full-text. My phone, purchased from Plemix, boots straight into English with no Japanese visible except for the Japanese word for Voicemail programmed into the phone. The one time I hard reset my phone it defaulted to Japanese but having played with the language settings before I memory navigated back to it and changed it right to US English, turn the phone off and ten back on and my English was back. Simple.

I don't have any problems with the keyboard mapping not matching the actual keys; or at least I haven't run into it yet.

As far as the unlock goes sure, i can definitely tell you what I used to app unlock the phone:

http://www.modaco.com/content/HTC-B...nlock-solution/

Follow posts 1, 2, and then post 4. So, change the 3 values, run SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe from your PC while ActiveSync is open, restart the phone and it will now be App Unlecked. Verify this using CheckLock.

Maybe I will chime in because this goes sort of with the discussion

I have a Softbank X02HT Black running on T-Mobile with MMS, and Full Internet configured.

I lost wifi drivers out of the blue then total recognition in comm manager a while back and to no soft/hard reset even helped. I eventually had to CID Unlock my Softbank, reload an older English only ROM (1.16.707.5) then reload a the current Dopod C730 ROM 1.16.708.7

I found out a couple things already about this mobile and here are my observations.

1. Softbank S/N do not work on Dopod/HTC asia website (at least mine didnt), therefore you cant get the latest ROM from them. A simple visit to XDA Developers fixes that issue though.
2. The CID lock on a Softbank will not let you load HTC or Dopod ROM.
3. The key mapping is sort of strange in some places, when they keypad is unlocked you have to press Unlock -> # not "*" as the phone advises you.
4. The latest ROM will reboot to Japanese after hard reset, no problem really to turn it back to English. Problems arise when it is already in English and you load a particular software (Skype Mobile) the software fires up in English then goes to Japanese. You have to manually reconfigure to English in software settings.
5. Dopod customer service is worse than calling Mumbai for Dell support.
6. Unknown reasons to me but the phone will lose WiFi WEP Key sometimes and I have to re-enter it. To the point where I remember it by heart.
7. The downward nav key sucks, you have to press it a certain way or else it will skip down or to the left or right.
8. I found that most CAB files specified for WM dont work, but the SmartPhones ones do...
9. No one has any idea what the hell SoftBank and Dopod are on this side of the globe (more often than not one has to go through the re-iteration that its a HTC S630), therefore this thing has a curiosity factor of 100000 in any cell store (which in turn also turns out that almost no one even on here has any idea how to deal with ROM and driver issues with this phone)
10. ActiveSync still sucks. Coming from Samsung PC Studio to this is like going back to the Stone Age. Lets not talk about Media Player Mobile, because the Audio Manager in this phone is better than MPM.
11. When you load something other than Windows Default desktop the screen tends to scroll much slower especially when specifying Windows Live, Skype or any other desktop.
12. On every startup network wizard pops up notifying you that the service provider (in my case TMob and probably such is the case for ATT) is not supported and asks if you want to switch. Easy fix is to delete the network wizard files in file manager.

I could not for the hell of it figure out how to CID unlock this sucker for free and I tried every method, had to eventually get a .unl keyfile for a price.

Uhhhh what? No, thats wrong.

MMS Works flawlesly on T-Mobile for me and is only a question of setting up WAP and MMSC settings. Something is wrong with your ATT settings there buddy.

Yea its CID locked. Try and load another ROM on it.

Indeed. I think his MMS troubles stem only from wrong ATT settings (could be a mistaken MMSC port or something stupid like that )

My WAP is setup correctly. Can you tell how and where you setup the MMSC settings? Did you have MMS setup with the Softbank ROM or the Dopod ROM or both?

My S630 just like...died.

On friday it my Wifi randomly stopped working, so after a couple of tries of putting in the network key I actually deleted the network off my phone and tried it again. Nothing.

I just noticed now that it doesnt see my memory card either. Its weird.

I hard-reset the phone and still nothing. Any suggestions?
Kind of sucks because the Wifi is the reason I chose the S630 over a blackjack...

There is no Softbank ROM. Its just Dopod and Im sure you have ROM 1.16.708.7 just like myself if your unit is fairly new. Be aware that unless you CID unlock it you wont be able to load the same ROM or the previous ones if something goes haywire.

Assuming you went to Settings -> Connections -> GPRS and you set the WAP right you still need to go do the MMSC Settings:

Step #1

Go to Messages main screen and hit Menu to bring up Settings

Step #2

Hit Menu again when youre in settings to bring up MMSC menu

Step #3

Hit Menu-->New
You should already have a Default Sample setting, create the ATT one first.

Step #4

Fill in your Gateway, URL and Port #. Ones shown are for T-Mobile MMS. I set mine to WAP 2.0 with max size 300k

Step #5
Make the ATT one default, delete old one.

Voila, your MMS now works assuming you have the simple WAP set right in GPRS settings. Not familiar with ATT so dont know if you need a proxy in there or not, others should know better than me

BTW, what is that Homescreen desktop weather youre running on there? That Fizzweather?

Well, as Ive said before, same thing happened to my WLAN card in my Softbank which took me 8 hours to figure out how to fix without total ROM flash. That didnt succeed, naturally. So I gave up and unlocked it and loaded ROM 1.16.707.5 then back to 1.16.708.7 Asia. The worst part was that for the 10 minutes it was loading each ROM I was praying over it with the holy rosary for it not to brick

If there is no ROM download for the S630 (Alot of posts to read ), you could always try and get the .unl Keyfile to CID unlock a Softbank/Dopod and see if it works...which it very well could. Too bad you will spend $ and cry if it doesnt work + you could brick the phone

Can someone that has a Dopod C730 go and download the BB Connect software from their website and upload/send it to me? This would save me alot of time.

And that might be the problem; my ROM is 1.20.761.4. And my messaging doesn't have an option for text messaging, or MMS; it has Outlook, and Add New E-mail account. I also have Softbank Mail which has Text and MMS listed but you can't edit the MMSC settings because it's not even listed. I'll post pictures when I have a chance tonight.

But to answer your question about weather on the homescreen; I was using the HTC Home theme and it comes with a weather plugin...I don't know if it's Fizz though.

Interesting! I wonder if the v1.2x ROM would correct the keyboard issue?

Posted by: ibeqa

I don't know about softbank, but my Dopod C730 works flawlessly. Never had a problem with wlan or anything else. Now I don't know whats wrong with Softbank, but I remember that also hermes users that had softbank version had problems with their devices.

Anyway if you did a CID unlock, I suggest to stick with Dopod Rom as for the moment it appears to be most stable one.

Cheers

When did you get this phone? Can you go into Settings --> Device Information and take a snapshot for me and post it here tonight also? I want to see it to believe it

Well, for a little $ and praying you can have your MMS by CID Unlock and flash to 1.16.708.7

Actually I think I have read most of the thread (sad, I know) and there is no HTC rom available, and hte Dopod would most likely brick it. Oh well.

But seriously? Not recognizing the memory card. This just sucks...

From Settings -> about:

What I get when I go to Softbank Mail in messaging:

Oh, and I ordered the phone on January 15th.

Just to let you all know, I previously posted about my screen f'in up. Dopod customer service is horrible. Turns out if you purchase your phone online from the US, in my case I bought the phone through ebay from a HK retailer, your phone isn't covered by warranty and your supposed to contact the seller for problems. So I did and the seller not only took forever to respond but told me to contact Dopod. I dunno bout softbank but Dopod customer service is really undependable.

you have a later rom (radio and CE)... I wonder if I can put in a softbank rom into a dopod... with my radio, I get dropped calls often.

Is there anyway to tell if the phone is CID unlocked besides trying to flash a rom?

also, where did you buy the CID unlock from?

Numbers don't mean a thing unless they are from the same carrier/brand.
Different carriers have different numbers and they are never the same. Roms are the same except for carrier customisation. The only thing that matters is who's gonna release update faster.

Radio ROM is a different issue, there are differences and keep in mind that different radios are for different regions.

If you load another ROM into the Softbank and its CID locked it will just say it cant do it and go back to your previous version. Really no way to brick the device because it wont even load.

Thanks for the link ibeqa BTW. BB Connect lets you use their internet and mail server. Saves you money in some instances and lets you connect to your company server...bad news on the T-Mobile minutes+mail+data plan...its GPRS only.

I did notice one weird issue on my Softbank X02HT. For some reason, I can't add voice tags to my contacts. It says in the manual that I should be able to assign a voice tag in speed dial, but I can only assign a keypad assignment? Anyone else have this problem? In my start menu I do have a Voice Notes application but this doesn't seem to be linked to my contacts!

Posted by: LOT767-300ER

Didnt try this yet, ill give it a shot later today and let you know..

I have a Dopod Rom'd XO2HT and am realizing that when the phone is plugged into the charger, no calls come through. I have no problem making calls out, but any calls coming in don't ring. I called my phone from my girlfriends phone and my line rang all the way through to the voicemail. The only way I can get calls though while it is charging is if I turn the phone off, plug the charger in and then power it up again. Anyone else having this issue? (If I have missed this on a previous thread please let me know!!!)

I have had the HTC S630 since around August and the only problem I've had aside from text input issue (now fixed) is T-Mobile MMS settings not working. Searched and posted a few times on this forum and either got no response or was told to use the T-Mo Configurator, which is what I've been using all along. Went to T-Mobile, the guy said he needed to change my IMEI # in their system but that didn't fix anything. Here are my settings if anyone can help (got them from T-Mo Configurator). When I try to send MMS, it just stays in the outbox and doesn't send and I also get this message:

In order to send/receive MM messages, the current active connection may be closed (this may affect other applications in use). Do you want to continue?
