Editing SHX Files?

Is this possible? I should assume so, as long as you redo the checksum to the values you've edited. But I noticed in the hex dump of a bin dump of a shx file, in front of certain file references, the ones that just happen to be locked in bitpim, there is a 'crucifix' sign. I was wondering if you could remove this, redo the checksum to be correct, flash a phone, then have access to the protected file? Pardon me if my ideas are flawed, this is not my area of expertise.
