I just bought the cingular 8525 and was just looking around the forums, what would you guys suggest be the first couple of things to do to the phone? programs, mods, etc, im new to the PDA/smartphone market, however i did some modding of my old RAZR so i can understand technical aspects. thanks

My 8525 should be here Wednesday so I'm kinda in the same boat as you. Now these aren't really mods but I ordered a protective case and screen protector off eBay (7 bucks shipped), and a Micro SD off Newegg (only 8.59 for the card or about 16 with card reader and card combo). A few bucks to protect your new investment and give yourself more than the standard 51mb available space should go a long way.

As far as software, I guess it would depend what your looking for but I've been browsing through here to check things out.

Let me know if you find anything cool and I'll do the same.

My 8525 will be here on Wednesday also and coming from a SX66, 8125 and a few other smartphones in between here are the first things I would get for my PPC.

The first and most important item would be a screen protector.
Some people do not like it and others will swear by it.

I've scratched enough screens to tell you that you need it.

Second most important will be Vbar.
http://vieka.com/vbar.htm

It will close a application instead of going through task manager.
Also will show you battery level and external Memory.

Other very usefull applications are:

<gmail application (If you use gmail)
<Google Maps http://google.com/gmm/index.html
<Voice Command
Usually costs about $40 and well worth it.
Opera Mobile or Mini http://www.opera.com/#

Here is one of the most important tips I can give any WM user. Especially a new one.

Do not load a bunch of crap programs. There are literally tons of freeware out there and alot of them can cause conflicts with other programs on your PPC.
Only load up ones that you will truly need.

Majority of the ones you pay for will have been tested enough to not conflict with other programs. Not all is true but the majority is.

When I get my 8525 tomorrow here are the first programs I will be installing.

vbar
gmail
google maps
Opera Mobile
Voice Command 1.5
Sling Media
Pharos maps for my GPS. ( I use a older version but it still works great with WM5)

Total Commander is another but I don't use it much.

I just got mine today. Are there any major issues with the new ROM? Should I not update?

I heard livesearch from Microsoft is "better" than google maps. You may want to try them both.

Hey not sure if your all set up yet but I installed Spb PocketPlus...pretty neat program. It allows you to have shortcuts to just about anything right on your Today screen instead of going through a bunch of menus.
