Preview: New Nokia Maps Update

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mark mackarus

I just got the inside tip from Nokia that an updated version of their mapping software, Nokia Maps, is due to be launched over the next few days, with some really cool updates. I have managed to secure pre-launch access to the software and already started playing with it on my Nokia N95. Before writing about my preview, I’ll share what they told me to expect.

That's good news. The program has a lot of potential, but clearly the existing version needs improvement. I'm especially glad they have made Search more intuitive.

Will the update be available to N95 owners as a *.sis application, or will we have to wait for it to be incorporated in the next firmware revision?

Posted by: PapaDocta

download the new map loader from here
http://www.smart2go.com/en/

v1.1 along with an update for the N95 built in software!

Posted by: DPsci

Wow, downloading at 36 KB/sec from an edu connection. Somehow I think the claim of improved download speeds is slightly exaggerated.

EDIT: Downloading the maploader itself.

Posted by: chops

all i see is v1.0 still avail for download from smart2go

File: NOKIA_Maps_1_0_S60_update.SIS
File size: 2.66 MB

Posted by: PapaDocta

download maps has been improved from the first version..

@chopsu3i see the pic

but the weird thing after installing the version of Maps didn't change still v3 w12 b02

Posted by: w810fan

The version I installed last Friday on my N76 is v3.0 wk07 b01
I wonder if they have different versions for different phones.

here's a screenshot of the about screen after the update. I don't know what version number that originally came with my Nokia N95. Can someone take a screenshot of their N95?

Posted by: edooward

I don't have a program to take a screenshot but my N95 Map software has a version v3.0 wk12 b02 OpenGL OpenBit MN

Posted by: PapaDocta

here it is

did you install it to the memory card or the phone ? i installed mine to the memory card and now when i try to install it again to the phone memory i get update error

Ditto for me.

The Smart2Go .sis files on the website apparently don't apply to the N95. We already have the program in the firmware, and it blocks these updates. I tried installing the .sis file for the N76, but it was rejected. Looks like we'll have to wait for a firmware revision.

Posted by: xinhang

Smart2go dont support n93 anymore it only support n93i? should i download generic or n93i version.

Posted by: tehcypress

if you guys have the .sis can you post it?

Posted by: Phat^Trance

anyone have the sis file for n95?

Posted by: THETRUTH#34

yes please post it

I doubt it exists.

here ya go guys.. i wonder why it was removed from their site i downloaded this file from their site a few hours ago and there was N95 in the list!!

Posted by: mark mackarus

I posted some screenshots of the preview. Keep in mind that the software is still not a final version. Leave a comment at the blog post if you want to try. I am only allowed to give it to a few people. I'll ask if I can publicly post the file on the blog though and wait for a response.

Any changes on GPS lock on? Seems software plays a part since R66 seems faster and also MGMaps seems faster to lock on then Smart2go

Posted by: w810fan

The version I downloaded and installed on my N76 says version
v1.1wk23b04
The maps must be new also. The Texas map is now 109.9mb instead of 114mb.
Download is very fast now. Before it took 1 hour to download Texas map. Now only 5 minutes.
Also I notice maploader says to put phone in mass storage mode. Before it said to put phone in pc suite mode.

Posted by: Candyman

Installed the update on my N95 and it is definatley newer than the one that came bundled with the N95 eventhough the version number is lower.

I did notice that once installed, you cannot erase it as it doesn't have it listed in the App. Mgr. screen. It seems to overwrite the original one.

Posted by: w810fan

You can also download the voices with map loader now.

Posted by: Candyman

Downloading maps with the Map Loader is sooooo much faster now.

Before to download the Ontario map, it took me over 8 hours. I did it in under 2 minutes now!!!

Posted by: fidorulz

Loader works great just hope software can help the GPS lock speed

Posted by: mahchoud

Do I install the app to the phone or memory card on N95?

I put it on my memory card and it works fine

Posted by: Dinan

Wow... the updated app is WAY laggier than the original... it's painful to browse around maps now!

It's interesting what they did. The original version was included with the firmware on the N95. This update replaces it. But like the original and unlike every other *.sis application I've ever installed, it's not listed in the Application Manager as a removable app.

Posted by: edooward

Oh... crazy. 95% you're right. I just checked mine out and it's not there.

So far I couldn't even get a solid lock on it. It'll lock for a brief moment and then back to search mode.

I think it has to show up in a firmware update to fix that.

Yeah... oh well. I'll just use Tomtom or Route66... both are worlds better than smart2go.

Posted by: sr1329

I just tried it and it really seems to pick up satellites a lot faster. However the search is still messed up and the right soft button now just says "exit" instead of GPS position. You have to go into the menu to find GPS position now which is stupid.

To find GPS position you can just press "0" on the number pad now. That used to be 3D/2D switching... for that I guess you have to navigate the menu.

But you can just hit the C button whilst selecting Maps on the menu to delete it. It shows up with the "Remove smart2go" option for me (I haven't attempted to remove it though!).

If you see an entry there, it's probably just the installer *.sis file, which you can delete. But the application itself doesn't appear, at least on my phone.

I just re-read your post, and you're absolutely right. On the main menu (not Application Manager) there is an option to remove Maps. The same is true of other add-in applications, but not of integrated components such as Contacts. Very interesting. Why there's no entry in Application Manager, I don't know.

That excites me actually. If it works out with my E90 I might splurge for the 1yr deal as I plan on keeping it for a long time to come....

hmmm, so should I install it or not?

Posted by: Toaster

Is there a tomtom for built in n95 gps???

Posted by: Candyman

I am now having issues downloading maps using 1.1 loader.

It downloads superfast, but then it gives me an error that the storage device is no longer found when my N95 is indeed connected. I tried using my memory card reader as well and still nothing.

No problems with 1.1 loader for E61i directly to the phone in mass storage mode.

faster gps fix so far today but not sure if it was the software update or if the sky was clearer today. liking the new colors too.

the gps fix time varies (or has for me) there are times it locks on in 30-60 seconds... other times it can search for 10 mins.

Posted by: J.Bruha

I just installed the N95 update and the new map loader. I'm very happy with both. The new map loader matches the black colors of the N series PC Suite and has an icon that makes more sense.

I'd say the satellite lock is better, but I've never had a problem with it. I was able to get a signal within 2 minutes from my bedroom window.

Aside from looking more gorgeous on my N95, I think my favorite feature is the "Search nearby". I can't wait to try the navigation.

Posted by: chops

huh so the 1.0 i downloaded earlier this morning really is the "update" and they really did get rid of the n95 option on the smart2go website..wonder why.

Same here. While I'm given the option to remove Maps from the menu, I can’t actually do it.

I had that problem too. It downloads the maps, then performs a file verification check, which always fails.

Rick has reviewed several of these programs. So, as power users, you’ll probably appreciate the improvements of the update, as long as you don’t have trouble downloading the maps, as Candyman and I did.

I’m not crazy about smart2go. While it’s great to be able to store the maps, which the free Java apps don’t do, the UI is just too confusing to me. I hate to point out the obvious, but as you personally know, a factory-installed automotive navigation system makes all these alternatives look like toys. They’re handy at times when you’re away from your car, for example in a hotel room, where you can look for POI’s. Rick, who is good at finding innovative uses for his phones, used his N95 as a mariner’s tool.

Posted by: Dinan

Tomtom or Route66 are both better than smart2go imo. I can't even deal with how laggy it is while browsing maps of London... Googlemaps is even faster while downloading via EDGE! (Route 66 uses internal GPS btw)

Takes forever to zoom in/out if you're looking at city maps and even longer to start doing anything... I don't understand how Tomtom and Route66 can have the same exact information but run so much smoother... (And I thought Tomtom was laggy!!)

I am wondering.....since they (Nokia) have pulled the N95 off their list at smart2go.com, do I smell a new firmware coming soon with this new update already bundled for the N95???

Posted by: mlear

right,

downloaded new map loaded, cleared maps from old map loader on memory card, then re installed new maps on new map loader. done so in about 20 min for 100mb so def a lot quicker.

then with the new map software, installed it the memory card. however there has been no change to the map software ie. it is the same as before. tried to re install the new software to phones memory - no, tried to unistall old maps software - no, and cant find the new map software which was just installed on the memory card so cant even unistall that.

sorry about this but any advise is welcomed.

thanks in advance and hope i explained well!!!

Posted by: Rcadden

I already know there's a new internal N95 firmware 12.xx.x.x or whatever. I wouldn't doubt if this is included.

I went ahead and installed it. On second thought, though, I should have walked outside and timed the sat lock before doing so, for comparison. Oh well.

I know that these solutions pale in comparison to full-blown setups, but those fullblown setups are also standalone, don't update maps easily, and are stuck in your car, and cost $400+, when you've already spent as much as you did on your phone. TO me, they're not an option.

Posted by: D4SSWME

downloaded the "rar" file and then installed it but when I open up MAPS, it still looks the same as the previous version

why is that?

How about this:

Nokia Map Loader v1.1
http://rapidshare.com/files/3761121...1Setup.zip.html

Posted by: J.Bruha

You'll definitely know if you have the new version of either software. The new map loader has a black splash screen and the loader itself is black instead of purple (not to mention, it'll download in less than 1/3 of the time). The new maps application on the N95 has a new start up as well, that says "Nokia Maps" in huge letters above the globe.

I don't know what everyone is doing wrong. I downloaded the map loader from the Nokia Europe link in post #50 and downloaded the new Maps for N95 from the rapidshare link provided by PapaDocta. I guess just make sure you're installing it to the phone memory? It takes a while to install, but it works.

Also, if you try to remove the new version of Maps after upgrading, it's not surprising that you get a "Download Failed" error message. The Maps application is part of the firmware, so you can't remove it entirely. Even when it says "Download Failed", I'll bet the upgrade has been removed. This works the same way when you're updating Quick Office.

Well, nevermind. I just got to trying the new Maps application out on the road and they removed the only functionality I used on it: the tracking. I'm going to give the free 3 day trial of the navigation a try, but if it's not worth it, I'll be going back to the old version. The tracking was the only thing that made the GPS useful out of the box without any charges!

oh helllll no. i installed it last night but havent checked the tracking thing. if its gone time for a master reset or reflash. cuz im not paying for navi.

hm streange, i installed the 1.1 map loader but the thing is that it seems to NOT download maps but only a voice package on 3mb! i cannot find anywere to download the maps...

last time i downloaded the sweden maps it took me about 90mb of my memory card and not 3mb...

Posted by: J.Bruha

The voices should be a tab just like the Maps on the new map loader.

Posted by: Rcadden

yeah I noticed that the zoom in upon sat lock isn't there anymore. That's gay. However, there could easily be a new version before the "official" re-launch, seeing as hwo this release was intended just for specific bloggers

That's all I used it for also. Maybe the final version will have it. I had a beta version of smart2go on my N73 originally that would only track sometimes. I haven't tried this new version on my N76 yet but I'm sure it will be the same as the one you are using on the N95. I would hate to have to uninstall this version and go back. I uninstalled the old version before putting the new version on and it took over an hour to uninstall. I assume part of it was because it uninstalls the map also and the Texas map was 114mb.

Posted by: Darla

I hope you guys know that the version that you are downloading for the N95 isn't the final version. The app is named by weeks because its still in development and has a few bugs.

The title of the app that I received is:

Smart2go_Live_wk23_b004_open

This version is missing the licensing for the 3-day trial.

Also no full screen. It insists on showing you what the two softkeys do. I really hope they fix these issues before final launch. Other than that it locks onto satellites much faster IMHO.

Posted by: riel

So I am guessing it's better to wait for the final version, when the bugs are cleared and all.

Posted by: chops

yea id definately wait...it gets locks alot faster from my experience trying to find the party last night, but it also lost the lock fast as well...and not having the tracking feature made it pretty hard to figure out if we were going the right way.

Posted by: daraj

Ok managed to install it fine after resetting the phone. The Gps now locks from inside my bedroom before I had to go outside the house to get a fix. Definitely an improvement in this side. I like the clouds and the colorful layout. Absence of Gps Pos. sucks.

On the other side when I start navigating there is no voice. I try to install them when it asks me, it says THESE FILES CANOT BE USED OR DOWNLOADED..... I even download them from maploader but no good. NO VOICE..

Did you connect your phone in mass storage mode before opening map loaader? Do you have SD card? Did you run map loader at least one time before downloading maps?

*** UPDATE ***

For those who downloaded and installed the new Map Loader before this post, go back and redownload it again off of smart2go's website.

Seems to be an updated version as the filename is now 1.1f instead of just 1.1.

I'm still waiting for the tracking to come back on the phone application in a newer version. I'm not paying another $12/month for navigation, even if it is worth it.

Those problems afaik were due to having the old maps on the phone still. Even when you install maploader 1.1, the maploader 1.0 still resides on your computer, so use that to delete all maps and then use the 1.1 maploader.

I actually just browsed my memory and deleted the maps, and that worked fine. I still used the maploader to delete maps just to be sure and then I redownloaded them.

Posted by: fldude99

OK..just finished reading this entire thread and my conclusion is to wait for the firmware upgrade or the complete version. Regarding the new maploader however, what is the difference between the maps downloaded from the "old" 1.0 and the "new" 1.1? Can the maps downloaded from the 1.1 be used on the original maps software included on the phone?

Posted by: J.Bruha

I really, REALLY want the new firmware or new version, or whatever. As long as it has tracking, I WANT IT. I'm not paying for a prototype version that doesn't have tracking OR a 3 day trial.

I can wait.

Posted by: ihavenolife00

What do you mean by tracking? The Zero (0) key still goes to GPS position. Are you saying it no longer follows you, requiring you to push zero to relock onto current positions?

I'm also curious if anything has changed with the map downloads. My guess is they just add some new points of interest.

Also, any reason why the current version for download ends in *28.sis versus the one I downloaded a few days ago ending in *30.sis?

Posted by: J.Bruha

No, the actual Tracking portion of the application. When you planned a route, you had the options of three things: Start Tracking, Start Navigation, or Start Simulation. Navigation is the pay service, Simulation is... a simulation...of what you'd experience if you had paid for navigation, and tracking was the best of both worlds for free. It tracked your location on the map against the route you planned, but there weren't any voice prompts for when to turn. All you had to do was keep an eye on it every once in a while to get where you need to be, and it's no longer there.

Posted by: ihavenolife00

Thanks for the info. With that said, I still have the older version. I think someone mentioned the software is a part of the phone now, but uninstalling shouldn't be a major problem? That tracking sounds like an interesting part of the program I never tried.

Posted by: J.Bruha

No, you know what, I take that back. It still has tracking. . .kinda.

You just have to plan a route and select "Show on Map". Doing this allows you to track your location and it also turns the map appropriately when you make turns so the map still points in the direction you're heading at all times.

I feel dumb.

Posted by: ihavenolife00

Does the planned route re-route when off course (assuming it does so at all using show on map)?

Posted by: J.Bruha

No, it doesn't. That'd be something navigation does.

Posted by: ihavenolife00

I see what you mean...

I tried uninstalling the new version to go back to an old version but hit a few snags. They uninstall hangs at the end, and when I try to install the old version I just get the new version again. It's odd....

Anyway, I enjoy this newer version. However, in imperial measurements the "y" in yd gets cut off.

Also, the show on map is nice, but isn't quite as useful as navigation. My gripe is that navigation costs money along with the guides, but I don't have an idea of what either provides. I don't know about everyone else, but it is a pain to type out addresses on these phones without a qwerty keyboard.

Unfortunately that's what happens when you download a beta version. It is 2 bad you can't revert to the original maps software. I still would like to know what the difference is between the maps downloaded from 1.0 and 1.1. Can the maps downloaded with the 1.1 be used with the original software?

JB:

Have you tried the new AmazeGPS??? Now works with integrated GPS and has voice navigation. Really a sweet program (if you have unlimited Edge)..

Give it a try.

anyone else having a problem downloading maps? it downloads fine but when it gets ready to save it, it keeps saying medium storage interrupted etc. WTF!

Problem with these programs that download maps "on the fly" is that you are constantly in a situation where you will miss an important phone call while accessing data. Thats one reason for the nokia maps being a handy deal when you have the maps on the mem card. Of course 3G would take care of that problem

Ditch smart2go.. use tomtom6 i find it to be BETTER

When tomtom is compatible with the internal GPS I may go for it

Posted by: J.Bruha

@ ArLequin, I have tried all the free Java GPS applications and I wasn't really impressed with any of them. As fldude said, downloading maps on the fly isn't the best way to do it. I have an umlimited data plan, but it takes too long and I really didn't like the way it was organized.

I also feel remorseful if I don't use the built-in apps. I know some are better and worse, but I really liked the built-in Maps/Smart2Go since day one.

@xinhang, if I can find TomTom for free that works with the N95, I'll be all over it. I can't afford another $150 application on top of the cost of the N95.

Posted by: xinhang

oh yea. im sorry i forgot everyone here use n95 im the only loser who dont have a n95

Posted by: J.Bruha

That doesn't make you a loser! Same team, man! You just value your extra $400 more than we N95 users do.

Posted by: fldude99

OK..question: Is there any reason to delete and re-download the same maps currently on my mem card with the new maploader?

Yeah, the maps are different. If you keep the old maps it will try to download the current maps while you use the program.

Since I downloaded the entire state of FL, the maps program never really tries to download anything while I'm using it..what is different about the "new" maps?

how are you doing this? when i do 'show on map' it's just static, allows me to look at points 1,2,3... but doesn't do any tracking? i'm using 1.1

Posted by: ihavenolife00

I also get static with options to choose set points.

Posted by: J.Bruha

After testing it more thoroughly, I was right the first time. When you have a route shown on the map, it doesn't show your GPS position, or follow it.

Ricky has posted that apparently the new firmware has the tracking feature back in it however.

Well the new maps actually fixed my issue where it would find "Borders" locations in England before it found ones in NYC. It seems that the new maps have more shops and restaurants, and they come up on searches better now. If you are in a big city getting the Wcities guide is nice also, I got one for NYC and it really fleshes out the shops and restaurants a lot better. All the places are integrated into the map really well.

So is the consensus that the maps themselves are improved and different..and not just the maploader program?

Hi, I have update the map to v1.1 wk23 for my Nokia n95, but when loading the map it doen't auto zoom to your location like the original version, and also missing some other usefull features and functions as below:
1.) When starting map no auto zoom -- you have to press * to zoom in ?
2.) on standby map or navigation -- to view 3D you have to press "option" and go to "map option" to change instead of easy short cut "0" on the key pad
3.) Missing Tracking when you finish plan the road

If the feature is there or any one know please kindly let me know !
Also I would like to revert back to original version , if possible?

Thanks

Connect your mem card directly to your computer with a mem card reader-don't use the phone. If you use the phone you have to set to mass storage on the phone

Posted by: AntonisCy

how can i set the mass storage on the phone?

Because i dont have a card reader

Thanks

Posted by: D4SSWME

when you connect the phone through usb to the computer, it will ask you to select a mode whether pc suite, mass storage, etc

Posted by: AntonisCy

thats what i do. And it says that the memory card is not available. Cant i use the phones memory to install the map?

For crying out loud just get a mem card reader

Posted by: AntonisCy

so this cant be done without a mem card reader? Can the map be downloaded via the phone using wifi?

No as far as i know

Posted by: daraj

You guys have to run the Maps once so that the program will create the necessary folders then close it. Then connect your phone to the cable selecting MASS STORAGE after that it should start fine.

Posted by: pfreitas

Holy Mother the new uploader is FAST!!!

...Yeah, I know...a little late but it's the first time i've tried it.

edit: In fact, I downloaded VA, MD, DE, and RI in under 5 minutes... That would have taken 24 hours on the last go around.

Yes. In fact when I updated my firmware it started even showing buildings in NYC, but it wasn't stable. So i deleted all maps and redownloaded. Now I don't have buildings but the app is stable. I think they keep changing those maps.

The new firmware has: v3.0 wk23 b01

This one auto zooms. Restores "0" for 3D. Has tracking.

I'm confuse??! everyone said this one (v1.1 wk23 b04) is the latest update from that (v3.0 wk23..) is that right?

Also My N95 firmware is the latest: v11.0.026,
so if I reinstall this firmware again will it revert back to the map (v3.0 wk23 b01 ) ?
Will I lost any other pre-install applications (e.g Chinese dictionary)

Thanks
