KX16 Help DESPERATELY needed!!!

I have the KX16 with Cricket. I recently got a USB data cable so I can get online with my laptop using my phone. When I plugged in the cable, it comes up "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port"
there is no software that came with it. Can I use this cable (and if so, HOW? and do I need anything else?)
I have absolutely no clue what I am doing with all this and would appreciate any and all help I could get.
~~Also, i noticed I have some ring tones listed on my phone, but I am unable to use them to assign them to anyone. Is this normal? Any idea how I can get to them?
