3G blackberry?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Has anyone heard any recent rumors about the HSPDA blackberry?
The curve has EDGE and it was just released.
I was curious if there was anything else down the line.

Thanks

Rumor has it that one will be out sometime. The Vodaphone 8707v is 3G but it is only GPRS here in the US (3G not compatible with our 3G networks).

I wouldn't expect any great leap in speed, especially not in email. Internet might be a bit faster, but there are too many variables, plus voice always has priority over data at the tower.

I don't have 3G in my area so I could care less really.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

wouldn't expect to see it anytime soon. Probably not until 3G is more widespread.

End of the year is probably the earliest you'll see anything (if that).

Was hoping it would be sooner.
Sprint Verizon have had an EVDO based model for quite awhile now.

People keep saying this, yet 3G is there in major markets. I am not sure about west coast, but its there in DC and NYC areas. This is making my whole company go to Verizon for BB instead of Cingular, or just WM devices. IMO, its plain short-sited on Cingular's part. They should "encourage" RIM to come up with something.

In a few major cities is not widespread. Why would RIM invest money in a technology that not a large amount of subscribers have access to?

Doubt you'll see it until OS 5.

Posted by: DubDub

I don't know why everyone is so hyped up on 3G. It isn't going to be much difference at all in email delivery and only minimum in surfing using the handheld device.

Also, my experience with 3G is that it really eats a lot of battery.

Posted by: applerokr

All that may be true, but a lot of people use BB's for tethering (tethering plan) so it would really help.

3G may not be widespread, but according to Cingular's website its in most major cities.

I just find it surprising that there isn't a 3G/3.5G Blackberry out yet on GSM when there has been two 3G/EVDO blackberry releases for CMDA (and I know they have more 3G coverage, but still)

When is OS 5 expected to hit the market?

Well we're only at 4.2 right now. It's not going to be soon.

Posted by: applerokr

but if this is truly an OS issue, why is there several 3G handsets on the CDMA side?
Doesn't make sense.

Posted by: Hook Man

It's not an OS issue. CDMA and GSM are completely different hardware. They can't just change one line of code in the OS and say "Here you go, 3G!".

Posted by: applerokr

I don't believe it is an OS issue, that is why I made that post.
In fact there is a 3G GSM 'berry available overseas (I believe), just not on the same frequency that cingular uses.

Reagrdless, you're probably not going to see ANY plans for new 3G blackberries untilt he Qualcomm/Broadcom/ITC issue is settled.

Frankly, I don't understand the hype over Blackberry anymore. I've used Blackberries, and they used to be the end all and be all for e-mail. But a lot has changed, and RIM hasn't changed much with it. The lack of 3G is telling.

yeah, very true. i wonder if the ITC issue will hold up the upcoming kasier (PPC successor to the 8525).
