Is there a grill or lens of some sort? Anyone have a HQ picture of this?

If you do a K790a --> K810 housing swap, the video call camera hole will be just an opening in the front of the k810 housing. You will be able to see down to the k790a motherboard in there - unless you block it off from the back side of the front of the housing.

I don't have any high res pics of this area, because when I did the swap I just put a 6mm or so thick by 8mm square piece of foam beneath the hole. Then I stuck a piece of black metal to that and covered it with the front piece of the housing. (Then stuck a little green SE badge on top of that)

No grille or lens, or any sort of protection is already there if you do the swap. You'll need to put some type of protection behind the front cover so that it'll keep dust, etc. out of the phone.

Hmm.. I'm trying to find the K818 lens, which is the same as the K810's lens without the camera hole. I don't think the K818 has been officially out yet though.

Found one here, but doubt it's of OEM quality:

the job is super easy
just cut a little piece of plastic (even from credit card), paint it in black first, then use krazy glue on it to close the hole up

Hello!

This is my first post here but i've been reading this thread for a long time.

I did the swap with the conversion kit from cnn.cn successfully but i have three problems:

1.) bluetooth malfunction like cleric808 -- FIXED
2.) the leds on the keypad dont work, i mean alla the buttons work correctly but the 1,2,3 and the above butoons do not kight [sorry for my english ]
3.) the camera button works but it will only auto-focus, it wont take the pic..

Any solutions?

I've already tried both k800 and k810 latest firmwares but the problems continue to exist..

really wonder where they got that. it's says picture for illustrative purposes only, so it will mostly likely come with a camera hole. interesting none the less.

just bought a k810a from a hofoer, i tried a sharpie to color the SE logo black and seemed to work for me, ill post pictures later

Posted by: andy_216

I just bought the k810i Ivory Housing and the k800 to k810i swap kit from CNN.CN

Should be here next week, I'll post my swap up as well!
Nervous about shaving pieces off but I have the dremel ready .

My poor k790a is all scratched up and abused the swap should make it all good again! I'll probably invest in one of those screen protectors too.

Posted by: Sturmtruppen22

i forgot to post a pic

heres the aftermath

andy, looking forward to that swap

i can't get the housing to close properly... the mid piece is not lining up up with the front and back

For you guys that have modded your K790a to K810a, do you miss the K790a housing at all?

How's the keypad on the K810?

Posted by: shenaniganz08

Not one bit,

the housing is lighter, and i find myself being able to text at the same or faster speed

... the joystick still sucks though ( too small and too sharp, just like the k800)

Posted by: aw614

lighter but does it feel cheaper?

Posted by: mrweiser

Not at all. I was very impressed by the way the phone looked and felt when it was all said and done.

Posted by: shaolinmonk

nice to see people still working away at this.. makes me want to do another one lol

Posted by: jamieeuk

Ive just ordered my k800i > k810 upgrade kit.

Ive just had a good read through this thread and i was going to just get a new k800i chassis and buttons (mine has fallen to bits with extreme wear and tear and i never use the phone now. Have an LG Viewty)

However did really love the phone so i could use it as a second, a replenishing project

I do however live over in the UK! so was really surprised to see cnn.cn post abroad for an excellent price. Infact the entire thing cost me just £13.65!!!

(An official SE k800i chassis is £20.00) over here! God bless the u.s dollar!

So looking forward to recieving the kit, watched the vid and it seems pretty straight forward, ive taken the k800 apart many times, so heres hoping this will be the last and most successful

Once i get the kit ill take pictures and post how it went, thanks to everyone involved in this project too, you've all contributed really well

Oh and im new to the forums :P

Cheers! - J

Posted by: aw614

blah

need a new keypad the joystick part broke when holding it, and it was bad quality, had to clear keys!
and the gap, might glue it...

Posted by: thadoggfather

oh no! where did you get the housing from?

Posted by: aw614

i got it off the same ebay seller mrweiser got, I think its in the other thread, it came with an lcd, in my case works. and tools. but the keypad was the worst part, now I am waiting for one from hk.

Posted by: thadoggfather

So it's all screwed up because the case and not because of your installaton?

That's unfortunate

Posted by: aw614

right now I am not sure, it seems to be a combination of both, the keypad was definitly the b/c of the seller. the top part it seems too wide, basically if I super glue it on, it will stay on and it wont bother me if its super glued on I'll psot a picture

if I take the plastic screen cover off, it will close...

did u super glue it??? can u post the finished product please. thx

Posted by: aw614

I cant, I am waiting for a new keypad from gsm4world...so its sitting inside a ziploc bag right now

Posted by: cow07

i'm doing the same mod, but i got my parts off cnn.cn. it also seems that the middle piece, the stupid flimsy plastic that goes between the front and the back pieces, does not want to stay sealed. theres are small areas that wont stay shut.

my conversion kit also had a small problem, one of the clips wasn't there, so the housing plate did not hold properly, i think this might be the reason why its causing some cracks and leaks on the overall finish.

i've emailed cnn.cn to see if i can get a replacement.

Posted by: aw614

mine still wont shut close with the front piece when i have the screen cover

Posted by: aw614

ok I am through with this...just going to get rid of it, as much as I like how it looks it just wont shut and now the flash doesnt fire and the AF light is a lot weaker. Its on BST now.
