Help - I'm not smart - Custom Ringtones for VX8700 with no data cable

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a VX8700 and a micro sd card with a card reader for my computer. I do not have a data cable. I have sound editors and I have been surfing the net and trying for over 4 hours and I cannot get my phone to recognize any mp3 or midi file I put on it as a ringtone. I have a stock vx8700 with default software (version T87VZV01). Does this allow for music quality ringtones? I read some guys thread in a different site who said it only does the polyphonic or crappy midi sounding files. Is that true?

Whenever I put my card into the reader and open it on my computer i have 5 folders for 'media, my pix, my flix, my sounds, and my music'. I've tried puting my sound files in all of these except for the 'my flix' folder.

I don't know what bitpim(?) is, but is that the only way to get music quality ringtones? Can it be used without a data cable and only a micro sd and card reader?

I'd prefer to stay with default software. So if there is a way to get good ringtones on there without upgrading software, that way would be best for me.

Any help is appreciated.

you can email ringtones (under ~130kb) to your phone. the email address is ##########@vztext.com

Doesn't emailing cost money? I am on the america's choice family plan.

Besides, I already have the file made and transferred onto my micro sd card. What difference is emailing the same file going to make?

As far as I know, the only way to transfer MUSIC to the 8700 flashed with verizon's most current software is the use the music essentials kit, and that doesn't cover your ring tones. Verizon has made it difficult for us to put anything on our phone without paying THEM for it. You can't even use bitpim with the new phones, they lock you out of the file structure and there is no known work around with stock software. So far your only choice is to email (your 10 digit numer)@vzwpix.com a sound file (wav, midi, or mp3) as long as it's small enough. When you open the message, the sound should play (sometimes it won't). with the message still open, go to options and save sound as ringtone. I've not messed with the card reader method you're talking about but I'm willing to bet Verizon has made that method impossible for us as well.

music essentials kit is 20 bucks... (i think thats what it was....) comes w/ a data cable - i'm sure you could buy one on ebay for ... something... dunno.

that being said... bitpim works nicely for putting ringtones on my phone. Just made 7 new 30 sec MP3 clips for "ringtones" and placed them on my phone with bitpim.

That being said - i just got this phone today.... so i'm like no expert :P i hear you can connect bitpim to your phone via bluetooth as well - haven't truely tried this out at this time (i have a cable after all.. rofl)

still working on wallpapers.. found some i like and trying to figure out where to put them =) heheh

take care!

I just got the phone a few days ago as well. If you could give this post an update when you figure out wallpapers/mess around with the phone more I and I'm sure many other members would greatly appreciate it. Thanks bro.

Actually it turned out to be pretty easy. The problem that i don't know how to solve is how to get the phone to believe it has more than 2 "wallpapers". If you find a SWF file you like you can name it wallpapertype2 or wallpapertype1 (.swf) and replace one of the ones in the flash folder it works splendidly. Just wish the phone would recognize more... i mean ... its not like i swap it all the time but i'd like to have more on there. =) (just in case ya know :P) Actually found that help from someone w/ a different phone that apparently came with four wallpapers from the factory (dang it... hehe)

hope that helps!

Uh... Bitpim works fine on my 8550 and 8700...

Must be a problem between the steering wheel and the gas pedal, if you get my drift...

Here's how I do my music and ringtones.

Music:
I have a 1Gb micro SD card to hold data in my phone. I can put music on it two ways. First, I can use a card reader and an SD adapter for my micro SD card and plug it into my computer and just drag and drop mp3s into the 'My_Music' folder. Second, I can use the data transfer cable I got of of amazon.com for like $5 and plug my phone into my computer directly. After its plugged in, on the phone go to the menu, tools, and then USB trasfer mode (or whatever its called). Then, your computer recognized the phone as a USB mass storage device and you can drag and drop files into the phone just the same as if using a USB thumb drive.

Ringtones:
This is fun. I use Audacity to open my mp3 files and cut out the bits of songs that I want to play for a ringer. I found that my phone will play about 22 seconds before going to voicemail so thats how long I make my clips. Then, export the new clipped sound bit as an mp3 to somewhere on your hard drive. Once you have your new mp3 file, use a card reader or transfer cable to put the mp3 into the 'My_Sounds' folder on your phone. Once you have it on your phone, send yourself a new PICTURE message. You do NOT have to attatch a picture, you only have to go to the sound attachment and select your mp3 out of your sounds list. Send yourself the picture message and wait a couple minutes for it to shoot through the network. When you receive your message go to options and select 'Save as ringtone'. And thats it! Make as many as you want. It only costs you a picture message. I'm on the America's Choice plan so I don't have to pay for individual texts, pics or flix messages. If you do a lot of messaging I suggest getting this plan, its pretty nice not having to worry about txt msg charges.

IMPORTANT: If you have a new micro SD card that has never been in your phone, you must first plug the card into your phone and turn the phone on. It needs to be formatted to your phone. The phone will automatically make the folders it needs to hold music, ringers, sounds, flix etc. Once your phone is done formatting the card you can take the card out again to use in a card reader, or leave it in to use the transfer cable.

BitPM works great for ring tones, i've got the cable from the music essentials kit (work paid for it what do i care) and the software recognized the phone fine.

I edit any sound file with a free program called "wavepad" (its actually quite nice.. and free) and save them as MP3's. Then there is a folder in the "brew" directory that holds MP3's. Place the files there (reboot phone) and they configure right up as ringtones.

That being said some i've read on here actually use Bluetooth to connect to their phone from their computer. (aka - no cable required) I haven't tried that because i've not had to.

Mind you i'm talking vx8700, don't have a different kind of phone.

Its telling me that my ringtone is above max size for a pix message. Whats max size??

Posted by: Lukavich

mine have all been below 400k. I think the max i've sent was about 365k. But just make sure you sound is under 30 seconds and it may need to be 128bit to get to the right size. I found that on my phone the ringer goes for about 22 seconds before it stops and the answering machine kicks in.
