How on earth do I check the firmware version?

OK guys - sorry I must be a complete moron but I can't seem to get that screen up which allows me to check my firmware number.
To clarify, I have an orange gd87, so when I boot, I get the panasonic splash and then an orange logo screen for a few secs and then it goes to my background and searches for a network which takes a few seconds.
I have tried after the panasonic splash, after the oraneg splash, and during the search. I type in #9999# but nothing happens. Am I supposed to press something else after the last "#"? When exactly do I need to type this. It appears that if I type the hashes and numbers during the "searching for a network" the #9999# just writes itself on the screen but does nothing.
Could a patient person please explain exactly how I get the firmware number up please???
Cheers,
David

He he he!
*#9999#
The last # shouldn't show up if you do it right.

yes, but when exactly do you press it?

I can't get it to work, currently I have no sim card in it because the one I have does not work with the phone so its useless.
My phone is locked

Nevermind, I put in a working sim card to get the searching for network screen and punched it in and it worked.

Read all the older posts and youll see everything you need to do. Its a bit lengthy but its worth it. Also dont ask anyone to show you step by step how to do it on this site cause you'll be removed by the moderator.
