Need Internet and Phone, but Completely Lost

I am looking for a phone. I had a prepaid one, but after the minutes expired and the phone deactivated a few times, I got tired of reactivating it and getting a new number. I need a phone, but I don't make many calls.

I spend most of my time online, and when I am out with friends, I get bored (they're not really all that exciting). I am looking for something that I can get online with to check my email, look at stuff on eBay, and other internet stuff.

I am mainly looking for something cheap. I don't leave my computer enough to warrant spending $100 a month. I was looking at something like the N800 where I can get a crap phone that is bluetooth enabled and use that to get online. That way, I don't have to pay for expensive service every month.

Anyone have any recommendations? Because I don't really know what I am looking at.

First, I'm assuming you're looking for a GSM phone. Second, why not get a phone with wifi to browse the web? How much would you like to spend? Besides, bluetooth, email, and web browsing are there any other features you'd like?

Well the first thing to do is select a carrier to provide the service. Look at where you will use the device - where you live, work, travel, play, etc. Talk to everyone you can, look at the coverage maps (but don't believe them) and pick the best carrier that provides the best coverage where you will use the phone.

Then pick the phone.

I don't know what GSM is, but that sounds good. I would like to keep it under $50 a month. I don't really care what the price of the phone is, as long as I only have to pay it once. Email and web browsing are really the only features I need. Editing Office files would be nice, but not necessary. I would like to go with Verizon Wireless as a provider.

GSM is the network technology. Here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM

If you are using Verizon, then all GSM phones are out of the question. You are locked into CDMA technology phones.

ATT and T-Mobile use GSM technology phones and are not compatible with the Verizon and Sprint (also CDMA) networks.

You should go to the Verizon website and look at their phones, because you will have to have one of those. Verizon typically will only let a Verizon branded phone on their network.
