Nokian E61 on Rogers - Problems, Need Help

Hello, I just got my Finnish-made E61 yesterday that I bought on eBay. It looks great, turns on well, etc. From the keyboard, it appears to be a model from Spain (could be number 0531061).
The details from the "About" screen are:
1.06.10.04.04
19-04-06
RM-89
Nokia E61
Basically, when I plug my Rogers SIM in from my Treo650, there is some kind of communication happening (the phone seems to know the SIM is there, and the "messages waiting" icon comes on), but it will not "sign on" to the network. I'm not talking GPRS or anything, I can't even make phone calls! Very frustrating, they claimed it was unlocked, but I can't even get online.
I also tried with the Nokia tool to update the firmware, but the phone won't let me put it into the "General Profile" (it either doesn't work or just plain crashes).
Can anyone help me here? I would be most grateful.

Have you switched it to only GSM mode?

Thanks for your reply. I am fairly new with the phone, could you let me know how I switch it to GSM only mode?
Is there another way to figure out if the phone was NOT unlocked, as advertised? I remember with previous phones, if a SIM from an unsupported service provider was put in, the phone simply wouldn't start up. This one starts and does "something", but I can't make calls or log in to the Internet.
Someone, please help me. Even a web link would help. Thanks!!

Hope I translate it correctly. Settings - Operator - netmode . Here you can switch between UMTS and GSM.
