e-mail and Blackberry or Windows Mobile?

I am looking to upgrade my 8125, but was wondering about push e-mail on the blackberry devices. How does it work on blackberrys?

Currently I am using outlook direct push on my 8125. The way I have it setup is that I have my personal e-mail accounts (gmail, yahoo) forwarded to a free outlook exchange e-mail I have setup which then pushes to my phone. The problem is that replying actually replies to my personal e-mail accounts unless I change the reply to address, which isn't exactly seamless.

My co worker bought a blackberry and he claims that on the rim network he gets his e-mail from yahoo and work e-mail pushed directly to his device and he can reply with out easily without having to change the reply to address. He e-mails have the sig "this was sent with a blackberry device".

Is this true? Can blackberry devices really do this?

If yes, I think I will convert and buy one.

Yes, they can. The Blackberry BIS integrates with Yahoo and Gmail and pushes your email to you instantly.

.... and you can customize/remove that sig., too

Hands down, the bb is the best device for email!

I setup bb service on an 8525 and it sucked! It was way more cumbersome than it needed to be.

If it's only about email - you go Blackberry and don't look back. If you want or need other functionality then other offers are compelling. For me email was very important but I also wanted very customizable PIM and other functions - email on my 8525 out of exchange is very good and I'm willing to make a small concession there to get the rest of it. But, if it's all about email - there's no contest.

I'm in the middle of making the same decision you're contemplating.

I've had BBs for the last several years (7130 and 8700 w/BIS) and live and die by e-mail. I'm trying an 8525 because I'd like a better web-browsing experience (bigger screen and faster network) and also I'd like to be able to remote into PCs using LogMeIn and TS.

I'm trying to figure out the differences in the way each device handles e-mail and have seen a few but, honestly, don't think they're that great. First, BB DEFINITELY handles Yahoo (and I guess GMAIL, although I don't use it) better; they have an "in" with each company and push the mail to you right away. HOWEVER, I DON'T see the difference in a regular BB BIS account and, say, setting up your e-mail account as IMAP on the 8525. BB will STILL only poll an IMAP account (albeit perhaps in a "smart" way), and if you have an IMAP account on WM5 then Outlook will use your regular reply address, if I'm not mistaken. You can also synch folders with IMAP, although maybe BB synchs more of them. Further, if I open a free Exchange server account, while I lose the reply address capability I CAN synch all my contacts, tasks, etc. online.

Again, I'm relatively unsophisticated in the technical details of IMAP, BB, etc. but I'm straining to see the great difference if you don't use BES. I may STILL revert to my BB but only because I'm very risk averse.

Good Luck with your decision.

I was talking about BBserver and Exchange apps. I've honestly been pretty impressed with push on the 8525. An email actually hit my device before my desktop the other day (we use exchange with exchange activesync as well as a blackberry enterprise type setup). I haven't had the 8525 long enough to really make a comprehensive judgement but so far it seems quite good. I'm syncing email, calendar, and contacts (I use a custom task program which doesn't support wireless over exchange).

Thanks guys, the problem is I want both web browsing and easy e-mail.

Don't get me wrong using a free exchange account I get all my e-mail, but what bug's me is when I hit Reply to. There has to be a simple solution for this.

All I want is when I get my forwarded e-mail, I hit Reply, automatically format the e-mail To: the correct person.

Come on Microsoft, that shouldn't be to hard to do.

thanks again for the help

You can do both on a BB.

I use exchange through work and have none of these issues. When I hit reply - I get the person who sent it automatically.

Maybe there is something in the forwarding service. Who is it run by? Is it an MSFT product? I can tell you that a 100% exchange solution (no forwarding from other accounts) nails this every time so it's something outside exchange in your particular setup for forwarding. If it's a POP or IMAP why not just have your device poll the account and send/receive handling it that way (similar to a desktop at home connected to an ISP). Not sure what your setup is.

Yeah, I don't know why BB's have this reputation that web browsing sucks on them. It's not like PIE is any better.

As for remote desktop administration, there are nice applications available for Blackberry as well. I would die without my mobile Citrix client.

THere's supposed to be a Citrix for PPC. I haven't had time to mess with it yet but I'll likely install it for "emergency" type situations.

I am using the free exchange service port88.org.

I'll look into to it more, maybe I can configure it to do what I want.

I was hoping to get 3G speeds on the blackberry, maybe someday.

Has anyone gone from a 3G phone to a blackberry and noticed quite a significant speed difference?

It depends. Screen size is somewhat smaller than the 8525 and speed (unless you're on CDMA with Verizon or Sprint) is slower. LogMeIn, which I use, does NOT support BB. You CAN get 3rd party apps to edit Word, Excel, etc. but they are relatively expensive and the 8525 comes with them.

Look, sometimes you just want something different. The 8525 as a phone device, for me, just S*CKS. I need two hands to make a call, period, and I'm not terribly fond of touchscreens. But everything in life has tradeoffs and web-browsing on it is worlds ahead of my current 8700 on T-Mo, the other things I can't even accomplish. BB still has problems with certain Lotus Notes e-mails. I still think that, with the advent of MS Push, the line between BB and a capable device has been blurred. RIM really does software right and their servers may be more reliable but without a BES there really are only so many technologies you can use to access your e-mail.

As I said before, it's NBD. The fact the 8525 is free makes it less of a risk (I'll just pay the $175 ETF to AT&T if I have to) should I decide to keep the phone.

You must have (and pay for) a BB dataplan if you are going to use a BB. No BB dataplan = no email and no Internet.

I believe the BIS personal is $30.

Off topic:

Anyone have a link for a remote desktop app for bb? I've never heard of one for the bb before but if there is one then that would be pretty sweet!

I had an 8525 since it was released last year, I dropped it and it broke. I decided to go smaller and get the Pearl. The Pearl is fantastic. The push email with Yahoo works great. The trackball is great too, takes a couple of days to get used to, but its very useful. Then add in the new Yahoo Go 2.0 (seem like it was BUILT for the trackball!), and you have a very fast, and efficient information 'machine.' The only downside with the Pearl is the built in browser, but I haven't tried Opera yet and that should improve things.

Net/Net, if you have Yahoo Mail and use Yahoo Services, then get the Pearl, and download Yahoo Go 2.0....

you could also use the mail2web personal exchange server. It is free if you don't mind using a web2mail email address and if you want to look like it is from your regular email address they charge a whopping $2 per month. I waste more on soda in a week!

BB will cost almost as much per month as mail2web is per year...

works on mine well.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Blackberry and push email is one of the best things made. Its super simply the only thing they ask you when setting up your email is your email address, user name, password, and then it sets up by itself. Email on the blackberry is almost instant I love it so much and replying is the same instant.
