Guys check it out and lets see if this is true.

here is a story about it.

Assuming the rumors regarding this were true, those on EDGE should already be seeing the effects, as the enhancements were supposed to have been done a while ago.

Posted by: jbzcar

I just pulled 231 kbit/s down with my 3125.

Posted by: iJITSU

I usually see about 45kbs when on EDGE. Tonight, I hit 90 so something is up.

Posted by: Nastronomical

I just pulled 245kbs down. Oh ****....I might just get the N73.

My first 3G phone (LG CU320), didn't get much faster than this over UMTS. I am quite pleased.

Yes edge speed has been increased. I posted this a while ago:

I am rockin at 200kbps on my N75 at half signal, not too shabby. I used to only be able to get 125kbps. Thats on EDGE too, we don't have 3G here yet.

Posted by: chonga

stupid question, but how do you check your speeds?

Go there on the device.

Posted by: RF9

Weeeehooo I'm getting 46kbps here at my house. I guess there's something wrong with my cel site.

Posted by: chonga

I'm at 239kbps EDGE with my blackjack.... from what i'm reading that's not too shabby?

Posted by: DubDub

Speed is still related to the connection, the processor, memory, distance to the tower and congestion so I don't get too hyped up about the speed. Modified towers can generally handle 285-300 kbps. But also keep in mind that voice always has priority over data. But then any increase to EDGE can't be all bad!

Posted by: hylton

I've been getting 200+ consistently for a few weeks now, prior to that I was doing good to get half of that.

It's probably the only thing GOOD to come of the iPhone release...

Exactly, even if the iphone sucks at least we get this out of it.

Posted by: Merlyn_3D

Just hope that with the millions of people who buy their iPhone today that it won't put a super amount of strain on the network. Boy I'm glad that I can "fall back" to 3G....hehe.

Posted by: BikerRick

I'm now consistently getting over 200k at home that only has EDGE. I get 800K at work where I have 3G, so the speed increase does help with my bitc*ing and whining when I'm using the network at home.

I hope they sell millions of the iphones. When the iphone owners start complaining about EDGE, maybe AT&T will bump the speeds up even more!

Posted by: unregistered825

It's funny that I can't find an area that isn't 3G HSDPA around here

Not funny. Not funny at all

Ugh...I can only imagine all the Iphones on EDGE at the same time....don't think theses speeds will last long!

Personally, I noticed the biggest difference while using Live Search maps. Wow what an improvement. This app was pointless over EDGE before. At around 200 kbps, it's usable. I can scroll, and the images fill in at a speed that doesn't make me want to throw the phone out the window. It's still a hell of a lot better on 3G though. Down in Lauderdale, where they have HSDPA coverage, the map fill in is practically instant.

Posted by: Sikskillz84

i havent noticed anything yet..

Posted by: MDIFILM

wow, how's your 3g speed? I'm at my house which usually have lower 3g bar signal and it's like 914-1000kbit/sec speed here.. *smile*

Posted by: garrym13

What the hell my best is 39 kb/s. That is with no programs running and full bars on signal.

Posted by: RF9

Well at and near work, I'm getting 190kbps+ every time on dslreports.com/mspeed.
I have NEVER seen faster than 181, and that was about 2 years ago. In the last year I've been lucky to see 80kbps+.
Dang, AT&T, why couldn't you have done this ages ago? All this effort to get 3G, I would have been fine with 200kbps EDGE all along.

Posted by: Nastronomical

I turned off 3G on my blackjack and with the speed increase i dont notice the difference.

Posted by: BikerRick

After the iphone euphoria wears off and they've locked in all of those people with 2 year contracts, I hope those idiots at AT&T don't dial back EDGE to sub 100kb speeds. I may sound paranoid, but it sure sounds like something they would do to me.

on dslreports using 3g and doing the 1MB test I get 791 kbit/sec which I feel is kinda slow.
I do a 600k test on Edge and get 226 kbit/sec. I know 3g is faster but it doesn't seem that much faster. I thought 3g was supposed to be like 3mb speed according to an article I read. I get full signal strength also.

Posted by: bradleyland

Look how long it took then to get EDGE up near the theoretical limit. Don't sweat it, they'll squeeze more and more out of UMTS and HSDPA as they go along.

Also, the processing power of your device presents some issues. It can only render content so fast, especially with the diminutive processors found in mobile phones.

query: would an older SIM prevent a handset from achieving these higher EDGE speeds?

i know the SIM doesn't typically have a direct affect over the handset's capabilities, but my NOK6230 has rarely pulled over 108kbps until this recent network upgrade, and while now consistently over 108kbps, still hasn't topped 120kbps. my SIM is an orange/green 32K, i believe the last design before the post-merger orange/blue 64K.

i'd previously read that NOK6230s were getting higher results than these, within the southeast TX region, so i'm wondering if there is any sort of network preference happening relating to the SIMs, or if i've done something bad in a former life.

thanks for anything!

On the dslreports.com/mspeed, I ran the 600k and 1MB test and got 1.883s and 3.851s. Is it as simple as 600k divided by 1.883, or do other factors need to be considered?

Around here, I used to see 60-100k, now I am getting 180-250k on DSL reports and my mobile slingbox is getting anywhere from 110-220k, and mostly 160k+, it used to rarely get to 100k.

I find this very hard to believe. I live in Manhattan & even with the better EDGE speeds, when I go see my parents on Long Island (Roslyn, where there is no 3G), I can notice a large difference in speeds.

I will never understand why someone in a major UMTS/HSDPA market will take off 3G capabilities on their phone.

If its the battery, get a phone that has a quality battery life. My Trinity is on HSDPA all day and I have plenty of battery at night, even with serious use (the same use and my Treo 750 would almost be dead).

I dunno.. I've been using dslreports a lot lately and I usually see some pretty slow speeds on EDGE. just did the 600kb test a second ago on my 8525 and here is what it said:

239 kbit/sec
0.634s latency
20.654s d/l time

239 looks fast but isn't 20sec a long time?

Today this started giving only 5k, 50k, 100k options. I even checked this on my desktop (4000k cable) and it only gave those choices.

Posted by: ericc191

use the 5k one real quick then it will give you to option for 200k, 600k, 1024k

If you want the larger file test page all the time, just change your shortcut/link to be

www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1

Anybody noticed a MAJOR slow down since this thread started. Just prior to and for a couple weeks, maybe a month after the iPhone release, I was testing out at 200kbps+ consistently, both at work and at home.

Now, I'm worse than before the upgrades originally linked to at the start of this thread. I barely can get dialup speeds, I regularly test out at 25-50kbps.

Anybody else getting this?

Chris
