S500i to W580i?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: shaolinmonk

Anybody care to try?

I rather have a walkman button then an internet button.... also curious to see if the shuffle/shake option would work..

looks like the same phone minus casing and firmware.. thoughts???

Posted by: darkninja

In theory it seems like it should work. But i'd bet that you will not be able to use the shake/pedometer features. Sense i don't think the s500 has the motion sensor in it. If you try it please let us know how it goes and with pics .

that's the only thing... would se use the same board... but not enable the function on the s500i? seems odd they'd have the same phone with one minor change...

Uh. You mean flashing S500i firmware to W580i firmware?

Not anytime soon. CID52 has not been fully compromised yet. Still baby stages, even CID49 can get funky depending on db20xx revision of the hardware.

but both are CID 52....you can convert k800i to k810i and both are CID 52 as well...

Posted by: strang

Wirelessly posted (Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.1.7196/1690; en; U; ssr))

You can also convert k550 to w610 fine and both have cid52 firmwares available even if shipping fw is cid51.
i'd be real curious about this. it's a make or break on getting a s500. i was spoiled with my k550.

who's down to be the guinea pig for this experiment?

Posted by: ranphi

I'd like to know if this would work or not, too. I've been snooping around the Net trying to find info or somebody who's tried it, but haven't found anything yet.

Posted by: raysacr

weird that the w580 firmware is available and the phone isn't even out yet.

lol, that's wotan for you

all we need is someone to flash it over...

Posted by: ranphi

I know the W580 is supposed to have a FM/AM radio in it, while the S500 doesn't. Will a hardware-based difference like that automatically prohibit a successful flash of the W580 firmware onto a S500?

Anyone know? (I've flashed phones before to update their firmware or unbrand a phone, but I've never yet tried to put a firmware for a different phone model onto another phone).

Posted by: Pinstripe

What is this 'shake' that everyone keeps talking about?

Posted by: Addict26

Its called Shake Control and one can tune to other songs with shaking your phone in the right direction.... lol

Posted by: Pinstripe

For real? Are we too lazy to press a button now? My goodness!

Posted by: vdub*bella

Is there an expected date release for the W580i?
I really love the S500 but I really need radio on my phones (thats why the Z610 was retired in a week )

Posted by: shaolinmonk

there's no radio.... i forgot about that... with that in mind don't think it's going to work..

The Rogers sub-forum is saying Q3/August for W580i on that network.

just to let you know... shaking a phone is less lazy than pressing a button

Does SE ever have hardware in some of their phones but the hardware is just disabled? Moto does this sometimes with their phones. They'll have the hardware in a phone so that it could be a quad-band phone, but they'll have that hardware disabled, limiting the phone to tri-band.

I know people have successfully hacked such Moto phones to enable quad-band on them.

Any chance the S500i could have the AM/FM radio hardware in it, but just disabled so that a flash of the W580i firmware onto it might work?

I may be totally grasping at straws here, but I'm curious to know.

Posted by: shaolinmonk

evilgabbie... my buddy just flashed my gf's s500i to w580i firmware.... and it turns on wooooohooooo...

just spend a few mins going over the changes... the following i can report

-walkman app works.. megabass, skins etc..etc... is all there
-fitness app and radio are added in the menu's

But the radio and accelrometer chips don't seem to be on the phone.. the shake n shuffle feature doesn't work, the radio can't find any stations..and the fitness app doesn't register your movements... so if you want walkman app and different themes... it will work.. but looks like the other items are dependent on hardware are phyiscally missing from the phone board...

i personally like it cause i like having a walkman button vs. a internet button..

Posted by: Afterdark

wow nice find mate.
speaking of phone conversions, can w810 be converted to something else through firmware? :P

Posted by: ranphi

Whoa! So it worked, eh?! Cool! Thanks for the info, shaolinmonk!

You're girlfriend's brave for letting you and your friend experiment with her phone.

So...from something you mentioned in your post...does flashing the S500i with the W580i firmware change the function of the Internet button on the front of the phone to a Walkman button? Or was that something you manually edited/changed as well?

Thanks again for trying it and sharing the info!!

lol if it brick'd i'd be buying her a new one..so the pressure is on me lol and i'd strange gabe of course...

internet button in front will now activate the walkman app... that is how the w580i firmware is designed.. just look at a pic of the phone and you'll see what i mean... (not a custom edit...)

but the pretty everchanging theme is gone... need to get that back for her and hope it still works..

i'll try to get some pics up in a few days... she's not around right now..

LOL! Well, I'm glad for you and your friend's sakes then that it didn't brick her phone.

Will the phone allow you to copy the themes off of it to your computer? If so, any chance you'd consider uploading them so we could try them out on our S500 phones? I'd really appreciate it!

And I'll ask even though I'm sure it can't be done...any way to copy off the Walkman app from the phone? I know that can't usually be done but thought I'd ask for the heck of it anyway.

i will copy the themes and wallpapers ringers etc.. soon

if you could extract the walkman app i would not have to flash the phone lol... i wish it could be done that way...

Cool! Thanks, shaolinmonk!!

I'm curious to see what the themes are like from that phone. Some of them looked potentially cool from some videos I've seen of the phone.

And yeah, sucks that the Walkman app still can't be ripped from a phone. *sigh*

Posted by: Afterdark

If you could rip it and put it on any SE phone than there would be no Walkman phones branch

Posted by: ranphi

Hey shaolinmonk -

I flashed my yellow S500i with the W580i firmware cuz I was curious to try it out and it worked. However, when I transferred the themes from the W580i-flashed yellow S500i phone via Bluetooth to my black S500i, the themes don't seem to work 100% on my black S500i.

They transfer just fine, but the main menu doesn't seem to correctly display the theme effects. The wallpaper and sub-menus all look correct, but the main menu of the S500i doesn't seem to properly show the Flash-based effects. (e.g. When I use the theme "Spinnin'", the main menu of my S500i does not change the icons to Flash-based icons that change colors when you highlight them with the cursor and they also don't show the swirling, circular effect around the icons).

Have you seen the same thing when using a W580i theme on your S500i phone?

Thanks!

Posted by: strang

OMG so getting a S500 now. I always liked the non-Walkman phone designs over the Walkman ones but gotta love that Walkman app.

Posted by: Addict26

Awesome news! I prefer the s500i look (although the w580i boulevard black looks quite nice too =D ) I might concider doing this too since the walkman app is a pré for me.

I don't get the hoopla over Walkman 2.0. My $70 iPod shuffle sounds 10X better. The W610i I had did not sound that great imo at all. I installed the same song on both units using the same headphones. Still sounded like garbage compared to the shuffle. I don't get it.

Posted by: strang

It's the interface, etc, might not beat an iPod but it's hella better than what the non-Walkman music player interface.

the shuffle actually has excellent sound quality... not sure why you expected the w610 to kill it...

walkman 2.0 is just a better interface that makes using the music player more enjoyable and easier to use..... it's the same as why people would prefer se ui over moto ui...

i personally think the se music quality is pretty good and many people that have done reviews or tested it have agreed... (minus the whole hissing arguement)

Posted by: Paul in SoCal

I didn't expect it to kill the shuffle. I guess I wasn't sure what to expect. Given the hoopla I thought it would be as good or close to it in terms of sound quality. As well with the mega bass it seemed to add more distortion than anything else. Just my 2 cent observation.

Posted by: strang

It is agreed that when it comes to a pure bred MP3 player, nothing will beat an iPod, even if you're using just a Shuffle. Those things are nice products and there's no question about it. I however like to carry 1 device that meets all of my needs, and a phone that includes a MP3 player is just icing on the cake. The Walkman 2.0 interface is excellent, and by no means a replacement for an iPod but it comes close if not better at the UI aspect of things.

Walkman's UI and OS implemention is the best in the mobile sector, anyone who's used the MP3 feature on their phone can probably agree to that. Nokia comes close but Walkman definitely sounds better than that. Motorola doesn't even come close, in anything lately, not just the MP3 player alone. Samsung too have a ****** interface for stuff like that.

BB surprisingly, with the Curve, has an excellent media player interface.

Posted by: oddsocks

With driver customization on an SE handset, it is very easy to come close to the sound quality of an "iPod" (like there's no such other MP3/portable audio player?). My W810 will very clearly out-play an iPod Shuffle on the same headphones, same MP3 (same bitrate, etc) while playing with the equalizer. I will admit however, without such modifications, the sound quality of the recent W-series, really disappoints.

Quote:

Agreed. 2 MP camera, 4GB of music space, and a cell phone. I'm sold.

That's that I don't get as my W610 did not compare at all to the shuffle. I wonder if the K810 had a better processor or something than the newer W series phones.

And as I am converting iTunes to MP3 to use on the SE is there a certain way I should transfer files to ensure sound quality?

Posted by: ranphi

For those interested, here are the themes from the W580i. I really like the two named Spinnin' and Strobe. (Especially Strobe! I love how the side lights on the phone change to match the color of the rotating lines on the screen).

*Note: When using these themes on the S500i the main menu screen will NOT display as it should according to the theme. Apparently, SE makes it very hard to get to the .swf files that the main menu (aka the "desktop" screen) uses.

The main menu screen with the Strobe and Spinnin' theme looks very cool, so I'm thinking I may go ahead and flash my black S500i with the W580i firmware so I can get the full effect of these themes (and to have the Walkman 2.0 app, as well).

Still, these themes look nice even without the main menu matching the them, so check them out and see what you think.

Oh, and there are 4 themes in all.

are you happy with the sound quality in the k790? the k810, z610, w610 etc..etc.. should all be the same sound chip....afterwords... only difference is the app and megabass.

That would be awesome, shaolinmonk, if he could figure out how to do that! I've been researching it and it just doesn't look like it's possible at the moment (as far as I've been able to tell). I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

Here's a link to the S500i ringtones. Hope that's what you wanted.

You mean to be able to use these themes on the K790a?

I got a 'THEME CORRUPT' message when trying to use on my K7

Hey just wondering if anyone had a link for where to download the rest of the s500i themes?? i think there are some on the website that we dont have on our phones???

is there any other way of getting these themes instead of downloading them directly from SE site? thanks

The thm is a zip file. You can rename it yourself and extract the contents.

For example, rename Strobe.thm to Strobe.zip and extract. Inside you'll find all of the png files that make up the interface, Theme.xml, and a flash movie (Laura_sb_strobe_19.swf)

Speaking of themes for the S500 would anyone mind posting a zip archive of the ones from the Official SE site? I've been trying to download them with my PC but I've had no luck.

The above is correct, however it still doesn't necessarily give you access to everything that makes up the entirety of a theme.

The W580i themes, for example, that I've been trying to figure out how to make complete do not include the .swf file that affects how the main menu appears. It's not kept within the theme itself, apparently, and is located elswhere within the file system of the phone.

You can get most of the theme with the process you describe above, but not always all of it.

ken i should be able to flash your phone w/ S500 customization

so for the strobe thm. the main menu's background suppose to be animated too?

btw the s500 can't display the clock as screensaver??

Hmm..

I don't have a W580 but I have seen pictures of the music player interface and I really like it. I'm a little confused about the flash files that we're talking about. These are the ones that make up the main menu right?

Could anyone post screenshots of the strobe theme on the W580 and again on the S500?

Thanks!

Best way is to download using your phone and then copying the file onto your pc

The background isn't animated, but the icons have a different design and the cursor you use to navigate the menu is a miniature version of the colored, spinning bars that are shown on the standby screen.

No, not as a screensaver.

When the display blanks out after inactivity, you can press either of the volume keys on the side of the phone and the display turns on briefly with a white screen that shows the time in digital clock form, so that's kind of like having a clock screensaver (in a way).

I put that SE logo on there myself. The yellow S500i I got had the "TIM" branding on it and I didn't like it, so I removed the logo with some fingernail polish remover.

Unfortunately, the remover also took some of the yellow paint off the phone, so I took an SE logo and glued it over the spot where the branding had been.

Hey iisdev - If you're seeing the main menu icons shown in the bottom pic, then you're in the same boat as me with trying to use an "incomplete" Flash-based theme (on my black S500i). It seems there's another, separate .swf file that's used just for the main menu and that .swf file is contained somewhere within the file system of the phone and is not transferred along with the rest of the theme when you copy a theme from one phone to another.

And it seems nobody has been able to get into the file system of this phone (or any other "CID 52" phone), so there's no way to get the entire theme to copy over to another phone at this point in time (AFAIK).

If you want to examine the .xml files of the Everchanging and Strobe themes, you can copy those 2 themes to your PC via Bluetooth or using the USB cable that came with the phone. Then, you can open the .thm files using WinRAR and that will allow you to see the individual files that make up the theme, including the .xml files.

HTH.

Yeah.. I'm seeing that now. I'm curious where the interface flash file is but maybe it's enough to understand how to reference it in a theme.

I didn't have much luck with the Everchanging theme. When I transferred it to my PC it seems like it removed *all* the swf files (even the standby)! Here are the 3 themes from the S500i as they were when transferred over:

http://rapidshare.com/files/4141258...themes.zip.html

Now when you transferred the Strobe theme to your PC it contained a swf file right? I know it wasn't the UI swf that we're looking for but I wonder why the standby was transferred for Strobe and yet not for Everlasting. Some of the actionscript in the Strobe flash file is revealing; there are global hooks present to read data and trigger features:

- FSCommand:illumination
this also takes some parameters to specify which color, etc..

- MP:
i'm assuming at this point this stands for Media Player and its used to grab the current title, artist, etc..

I really like the way how Strobe and Spinnin' displayed the current music (more so than Everlasting) so I was was looking for a way to kind of take the best of both themes and put them together.

I'm pretty sure that these swf are loaded into a parent swf file. That may or may not be the elusive UI. I'm also wondering if the the theme.xml files have had parts removed.

It's interesting that I was able to take my (swf-less) Everlasting theme and transfer it back to the S500i producing the nice UI again. There might be a way to get strobe to work with the native S500i firmware. Anyway that's what I'm looking at now.

Correct. It contained one .swf file named Laura_sb_strobe_19.swf. Same thing with the Spinnin' theme. It had one .swf file named standby.swf.

However, I just tried transferring the Everchanging theme to my computer and when I extracted the contents of it, it does not have any .swf files in it. So, I got the same results you did with that particular theme.

I also tried transferring it to my W580i and the standby screen is just black with no picture to it and the main menu is non-Flash with the regular icons showing, so the Everchanging theme does seem to completely block the transfer of it's .swf files.

Yes, from what I've been reading it seems that certain .swf files are part of the firmware for certain models of phones, so just by flashing the phone with the proper firmware, you will have certain Flash themes. Hence, the reason when I flashed my yellow S500i to a W580i it automatically had the W580i themes and can properly display them, but no longer had the S500i themes and cannot display them correctly/entirely when I copy the S500i themes back to that phone.

There might be a way to get strobe to work with the native S500i firmware. Anyway that's what I'm looking at now.

Yes, that's the tricky part. I believe from what I've read that all we would need are the other .swf files that are hidden away in the file system of the phone to make them work, but am not 100% sure about that.

Good luck in your sleuthing!

I was _so_ annoyed at the Media Player in the S500i (it doesn't filter tracks by album) that I also flashed my S500i to W580i.

Wow. What a difference the Walkman player makes! It's not perfect but it's a *lot* better. I was surprised when it picked up all of my album art. I think I also gained the ability to repeat and shuffle songs. The Walkman player is really nice and also uses a Flash UI. This is good news because there is the possibility of adding a Landscape mode to it!

I also really, really like the fact that the internet hotkey now launches the music player - I now actually have a reason to use the button.

Didn't realize it before but the W580i comes with a ton more games (11 vs 2) as well... I think I lost Brain Juice or something like that - Lumines apparently was on both.

Really very happy I found this thread!

By the way the Flash themes for the S500i are available for download (along with the firmware) at http://www.topsony.com

11 games?! When I flashed my S500i to W580i via Wotan I only had 2 games on the phone afterwards; Lumines and Sims 2.

Where/how did u flash yours and what games ended up on your phone after flashing?

Posted by: jmcapozzi

There's a way to get those themes (and more) back into your FS. Use the Davinci/update xml method, and the best time to set that up is when you do your first flash through Davinci, doesn't cost you extra then.

Follow this thread for more info, everything written for the K800/W850/W888, etc should work on the S500/W580.

WotonServer. My guess is that we used a different language for the firmware. I used "R6BC002 - Generic Trade Hong Kong".

New W580i games are:
- Aircraft Gear
- Diner Dash
- Insaniquarium
- Lumines Block C
- Magical Dice
- Nightmare
- Paparazzo
- Poli-the Bear
- Sims 2
- Super KO Boxing
- Super Mahjong

My original S500i games were:
- Brain Juice
- Lumines Block C

Ah, okay. Yeah, I did the Generic America 1 and it only comes with 2 games. (And I take it you meant to say you used Wotan, not Wonton? I've never heard of WontonServer).

That's quite the difference in games between the 2 regions!

My spelling has been absolutely atrocious tonight. I'm sorry!

I was going to choose Generic America 1 too but my original phone had the HK firmware on it so I thought I would stay like that.

I found an extracted version of the S500i firmware. It's not our original firmware but it *does* include the flash files we're looking for. I'll continue to look for our original firmware as well as an extracted W580i. Look under \TPA\PRESET\SYSTEM\STANDBY\FLASH for standy and
\TPA\PRESET\SYSTEM\DESKTOP\FLASH for desktop. The desktop folder contains the original FLA files so we don't need to decompile.

http://rs89.rapidshare.com/files/38...Directories.rar

If you browse around there are some interesting things in the firmware. There are references to the radio function but no files. I want to compare this with the W580i firmware as soon as I can find it.

Also good news. Someone else PM'd me and tells me they extracted the flash files from the Walkman app. As soon as I get a hold of them I'll be able to tell if it can be modified to give the option of a landscape view.

Whoa! Nice find, man!

Interesting to see how these files are laid out. Looks like the DayandNight theme and the Everchanging theme actually are composed of multiple theme files. DayandNight has 2 theme files it uses and Everchanging has 5 altogether. Interesting! So that's how they implement the multiple looks that these "dynamic" themes have.

So now we know the path structure that the S500i uses for it's theme files. That's good. I just wish there were an easy way to upload these files into the appropriate locations on the phone. I know there's the method that jmcapozzi posted a bit earlier, but that's still a bit on the "clunky" side, IMHO. It sounds intriguing, but the thread he refers to at the lasyk forum was actually written for certain "Walkman" models and I didn't wanna risk it just yet on the S500i (since it's not a "Walkman" model). Plus, until now, we didn't know the path structure that the S500i uses.

Thanks a lot for sharing this info! It's great to know and just maybe this will lead to a good way to transfer themes completely between the S500i and the W580i phones.

I'm still debating on whether I want to do what you've done and go ahead and flash my black S500i to W580i so I can get the Walkman 2.0 app on there and have the full W580i themes, but even if I decide to do that I'll still want a way to then transfer the S500i themes that I like onto the W580i.

Tough choice for me to make right now.

Thanks again for sharing your findings!

Okay, it's very late here and I'm totally frazzled after everything I've just gone through, *but* I now have a S500i flashed with W580i firmware *and* have successfully loaded the Everchanging and DayandNight themes (from the S500i) onto my W580i!! W00t!

I can't freaking believe I finally got it working. It was not easy and quite the PITA, to be frank. But it is working, so I'm feeling quite satisfied with myself right now.

I'm crashing now and will try to write something up tomorrow to explain what I did. (Most of it came from the thread that jmcapozzi posted about earlier, but it still took some sleuthing of my own to get these 2 particular themes loaded and working). It costs money and you really have to go through quite a few steps to get it all done, so it's not going to be something that everybody with a S500i will want to try.

Interestingly, when you go into the main menu with either the Everchanging/DayandNight theme on a W580i, the space where the "Walkman" icon belongs shows the music player icon (as from the S500i) and it can't generate the application title ("Walkman") at the top of the main menu screen when you highlight the icon. It works properly though, and does open up the Walkman app when you highlight and click it. (Makes sense since these 2 themes are expecting to be on a S500i with the Music Player app instead being on a W580i with the Walkman app).

Interesting. Yes, please write up something. Maybe we can take a look at it and see if there are any shortcuts to take.

Flash movies can load other flash movies. My current idea is to create an empty shell swf as the menu and standy movies. These would be called directly from the theme but need to be flashed in the phone. Once that's done however it may be possible to determine (in the shell swf file) what theme is currently in use and load the corresponding swf off of the memory stick. The benefit of this is that it should be future proof for any flash themes we want to run on the phone. Of course this may not work at all.

So you got both themes to work completely? Do they load D1-2.thms and E1-5.thms correctly? I was worried that feature was something that was unique to the S500i firmware.

1. Go here:
http://www.wotanserver.com/en/

2. Look for 'Download' (top right of screen)

3. Download the 'Getting Started Guide 1.2' pdf

4. Download the 'WotanClient 1.0.000'

5. Download the 'USB Flash Driver'

6. Open the 'Getting Started Guide' and follow the instructions. They've done a good job at making this user friendly. If you can't open the guide download Foxit reader here http://us03.foxitsoftware.com/foxit...eader_setup.exe .

You'll probably want to get the Generic R6BC002 firmware for your phone although in this thread we're talking about using the firmware of the W580i instead of the original S500i firmware. Go back to the beginning of the thread and see if any of the benefits of W580i apply to you. If it does you might also want to try it. You'll want the Generic R6BC002 in either case - it will remove the branding.

Yes, as far as I can tell, both of these themes are working correctly in their entirety on my W580i. The DayandNight theme has properly changed it's appearance during the day/night and the standby and desktop screens look just as they do on the S500i, and the Everchanging one has correctly changed from it's daytime appearance to it's night time one, as well.

Also, the desktop and standby screens for Everchanging change when I alter the month in the date field on the phone.

Okay, this is going to be a fairly long and complicated post more than likely. I'll try my best to write out and explain what I had to do to get my yellow S500i flashed to a W580i and to then hack the phone to be able to upload whatever Flash-based themes I wanted on it (including the dynamic Everchanging and DayandNight themes from the S500i).

Big kudos and many, many, many thanks to: waldog, eXoR, Evo* and Tan2097 and their thread on " How to add flash menus to any W850i or W880i with CID49/51/52" at:

http://myforum.lasyk.net/showthread.php?t=32889

Their many trials and tribulations are what taught me how to be able to upload whatever Flash themes I want onto my W580i and what led me to figure out how to get the Everchanging and DayandNight themes working on the W580i, as well. Thanks, guys!!!

If you want a picture illustrated guide of what I'm about to describe below, then check out post #671, by Tan2097, here:

http://myforum.lasyk.net/showthread.php?t=32889&page=34

I'm basically taking what Tan wrote and altering it as necessary so that this procedure will work for a W580i and will show you how to upload the dynamic S500i themes (Everchanging and DayandNight) onto a W580i.

**Please note, that I have 2 S500i phones; one black and one yellow. The yellow one is the one I've done all this experimenting on and flashed to a W580i, while my black phone is left relatively untouched and running the S500i firmware still. I've used both phones during this experiment to help me figure out what files make up these dynamic themes and where said files need to go onto the phone to work properly.

Part 1: Hacking your phone via davinci to be able to upload Flash themes onto your phone:

1) First thing I did was go to wotanserver.com and bought an account there so that I could flash my yellow S500i with the latest version of the W580i firmware that Wotan has (version R6BC002). This cost aprox. $10 US dollars when I did this. (I'm not writing out instructions on how to do this, as Wotan has nicely written instructions on their site on how to flash your phone).

**Please note that flashing your S500i to a W580i will erase any data/files you have put into your phone's memory. When the flashing is done, it will be like having a brand new, out-of-the-box W580i, so backup any data/files you have on your phone that you wish to keep!

2) Next, I pieced together a method of successfully hacking my W580i from the above Lasyk forum thread using the davinciteam.com service, so that I could upload whatever Flash themes I wanted on my phone. Currently, this costs around $14 US dollars to do.

3) Please note, between these 2 necessary steps you're looking at a total cost of roughly $25.00 to do this. There's no free method of doing this at this point in time, so please don't bother asking how to do this for free.

4) I bought 10 credits at davinciteam and downloaded their latest client to my desktop. (Client version I used is 22.23). http://www1.davinciteam.com/

5) I downloaded the file named "default_upgrade_davinci_W_CID51_52.zip" from post #240 in this thread to my desktop:

http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?...35&#entry131635

I've uploaded the same file to here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/4203315...D51_52.zip.html

**Please note, I had previously tried another version of this file from the Lasyk thread but it did not work for me and thus, the davinciteam hack for my phone did not work. I'm not sure what the differences are between these files (they have the same file name), but I also know that other people had the same problem as me and that this particular file ended up working for them. (Many thanks, again, to Evo* and Armageddon for posting this file)!

6) I started the davinci client and logged in.

7) I turned off my W580i and plugged in the USB DCU-60 cable that came with the phone into a USB port on my computer.

8) While holding down the "C" button on my W580i, I plugged in the other end of the DCU-60 cable into the port on the side of my phone. The davinci client then saw my phone and scanned it to identify it.

9) From the "Services Available" screen on the davinci client, I chose the "Flash Custom Software" option and clicked the "Next" button.

10) On the "Flash Custom Software" screen, shown on the davinci client, I checked the box "CDA" and then hit the "..." path button to point the davinci client to the "default_upgrade_davinci_W_CID51_52.zip" file I had put on my computer's desktop in step 5 of these instructions.

11) I then clicked the "GO" button on the davinci client and waited for the client to finish flashing my phone.

12) When the davinci client said it was done, I closed the client, disconnected my W580i from the data cable and turned the phone on. If the davinci hack is successful on your phone, you should see the Sony Ericsson logo when you first turn on your phone and then the message "Please wait" will appear for a second or two. If you don't see this "Please wait" message, then most likely the hack did not work on your phone for some reason.

Another thing to look for on your phone after the davinci hack is to see if a file named "default_upgrade.xml" appears in your phone's memory in the folder named "Other". You can look for this file by going into the main menu of your phone, selecting File Manager, and then clicking on the folder named "Other". You should see the file "default_upgrade.xml" there, but if you don't it does not necessarily mean the davinci hack failed. Some people who successfully hacked their phone with the davinci client did NOT see this .xml file in their "Other" folder for some reason. (I saw the default_upgrade.xml file after doing mine, but just wanted to point out that others did not even though the hack had worked on their phone).

This concludes the part for hacking your phone to accept Flash themes that you want to install. Part two will cover how to actually upload the Flash themes onto your phone.

Posted by: ranphi

Part 2: Uploading Flash themes to your W580i after successfully completing the Davinci hack

For this part, you can simply follow the instructions that Tan2097 has already written in post #671, here:

http://myforum.lasyk.net/showthread.php?t=32889&page=34

with the section entitled, "To install the flash menu's & themes".

You can ignore that he's written the instructions for a W880i. His instructions work just as well with a W580i phone.

Now, while Tan's instructions will work for most Flash themes. There are some differences to get the dynamic Flash themes (such as Everchanging and DayanNight from the S500i phone) uploaded and working. As far as I know, nobody else has covered this, so this little part I figured out with my own tiny brain.

Both of these dynamic themes not only have multiple .swf files to them, but also multiple .thm files within them.

Here are the files that make up these 2 dynamic themes:

DayandNight theme:

Theme filename is "Day and night.thm". This is the file that goes into the "Themes" folder on your phone.

There are 5 files total that make up this theme. Here are their file names and where they need to go on your phone:

~DayAndNight_desktop.swf (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
D1.THM (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
D2.THM (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
DayAndNight_desktop.swf (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
DayAndNight_standby.swf (belongs in tpa/preset/system/standby/flash/)

Everchanging theme:

Theme filename is "Everchanging.thm". This is the file that goes into the "Themes" folder on your phone.

There are 7 files total that make up this theme. Here are their file names and where they need to go on your phone:

E1.THM (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
E2.THM (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
E3.THM (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
E4.THM (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
E5.THM (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
Everchanging_desktop.swf (belongs in tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/)
Everchanging_standby.swf (belongs in tpa/preset/system/standby/flash/)

You can download all the extracted files for these 2 themes and the main theme files from here:

Dynamic themes

The 2 main theme files ("day and night.thm" and "everchanging.thm") you can place in the Themes folder on your phone however you usually do (bluetooth, USB cable).

To upload the remainder files, I've already composed a "default_upgrade.xml" file that you can use to upload the files to your phone. You can download it here:

default upgrade xml file

Download this .xml file, throw it into the "Other" folder on your phone, throw in all of the theme files from the other Rapidshare download link I posted in this article EXCEPT for the 2 main theme files ("day and night.thm" and "everchanging.thm" -- those 2 files go into the "Themes" folder on your phone), restart your phone and you should now have these 2 dynamic themes installed on your phone.

I hope this is understandable. I know it's a lot to process. I was bleary-eyed after reading everything I had to cover to figure out how to do this and get it all to work. Writing instructions is not my strong point either, so I apologize if this is hard to follow. I tried to explain it as best I could. If somebody else wants to take a stab at this and clean it up or make it clearer, feel free to do so. I won't be offended.

Good luck to all who try this! I'm prolly gonna be going through all of this again really soon, as I think I wanna flash my black S500i to a W580i.

The themes that come with the W580 (they're really cool and I like them quite a bit better than the S500 themes), TrackId application (to identify songs. I assume it works, but haven't tried it yet), SIMS 2 game (but you lose Brain Juice from the S500 -- eh!). Think that's it.

Oh, and the fact that the davinci hack works for this phone. I don't know that it would work on a S500 or, if it did, if the paths for uploading theme/.swf files would be the same or not. And I love that I can now upload whatever Flash themes I want onto my phone! That's a big feature for me.

radio not working? maybe there is actual hardware differences

Posted by: Gok

I was just on SE's site and I saw a coming soon battery the BST-39. I clicked on it and it says compatible k750, w580, w600, w710, w800. There is also a BST-38 which is in the S500 and w580 isnt listed. So does that mean w580 and s500 use different battery?

Yes, there apparently are hardware differences.
That, or the hardware is completely disabled in the S500i, as neither the radio, nor pedometer work when flashing a S500i to a W580i.

It's a typo. If you go to accessories for W580 no less than four different batteries are listed.. BST-38 is the one.

Maybe. I'm trying to get a hold of the extracted firmware for the W580i for comparison. Haven't found it anywhere yet.

Thanks, iisdev!

I, too, have looked around for an extracted W580i firmware and haven't been able to find it anywhere so far. Davinciteam.com doesn't even have it to offer to flash to your phone. Only Wotan seems to have it for now.

ok I tried to do the theme work around and It doesn work. The bottleneck is that I do not have the tpa file. Also do the files go directly on the phone or on the M2 card? Kinda confused, sorry.

Not sure what you mean when you say you "do not have the tpa file", sorry.

The files have to go into the phone memory, not the M2 card. The davinci hack allows you to upload the needed files into the hidden directories in the phone's internal memory. (The only files you can get away with placing on a M2 card would be the "normal" .thm files that go into the "Themes" folder. Those can go into either the "Themes" folder in the phone's memory or the "Themes" folder on a M2 card).

Just note that with these 2 particular, dynamic themes (Everchanging and DayandNight), they have .thm files inside of them (D1, D2, E1-E5.thm) that have to go into the phone's internal memory, not a M2 memory card.

Ok, I did the wotan server flash, then did the davinci one too. Everything worked out fine. To clarify, I dont have the tpa folder. I guess that is the problem? So I take the M2 card out but the I cannot access the phone. I guess the davinci hack didnt work in my case? I see a "system" folder, but that is it and I do not see the tpa file there. Any thoughts?

tpa/preset/system/desktop/flash/ this I cannot find on the phone. Do I need to create it?

Those folders are hidden, system folders so you can't see them. The davinci hack, if successful, should write those folders onto your phone (but, again, you won't be able to see them). The only way to get needed files into them is by using a file named "default_upgrade.xml" that contains instructions on what files to upload to your phone and where they need to go.

Since you've done the davinci hack do you see the message "please wait" for a second or two whenever you restart/turn on your phone? It should appear right after the Sony Ericsson logo when you restart/turn on your phone. If you see the "please wait" message, then the davinci hack was successful. If you don't see that message, then the hack failed.

I used to see the please wait for a second but now I do not see it at all. It doesnt show at all. Is MSSEMC a system folder to use or is 'tpa' the one you see. If that is the one, I do not have access to it

If you're no longer seeing the "please wait" message then something may have happened to undo the hack. Did you, possibly, update your phone's firmware *after* doing the davinci hack? If so, that will erase the davinci hack from your phone.

Once you've done the davinci hack, you can't update the firmware of your phone without losing the hack. Doesn't matter how you update the firmare -- SEUS, Wotan, Davinci... any update of the firmware will erase the davinci hack from your phone.

And you can't see the "tpa" folder. It's a hidden folder on the phone.

Posted by: kpjimmy

Hmm...nope I didnt go back to wotan to update again. I thought I followed your instructions....first go to wotan and update firmware from s500 to w580. Next went to davinci, purchased 10 credits, downloaded your zip file and attached the zip to the davinci client. Davinci did its thing and I reset the phone and the 'please wait' was on there until I moved the two thm files from the M2 to the phone.

But I did create the tpa files. There were no tpa files listed anywhere.

On an off note, my w850 reception has better reception than the quad band s500/w580. I did enable AMR and used the generic trade hong kong firmware. Maybe that is the culprit?

Hard to say. It's not a simple process to get the davinci hack installed correctly and to then upload Flash themes successfully. It's just a complicated process, unfortunately.

And you shouldn't have had to create any "tpa" folders. That's something the davinci hack does to your phone during it's installation process.

Oh well...i guess I can do without...or even maybe just download them from se directly...

Posted by: kpjimmy

OK, went BACK to the original S500i firmware so davinci was erased. Kiss my 10 credits gby! LOL Now I have all the features back. As for the RF signal, its a bit better but still not up to par as my triband w850 for some reason. As asked previously, yes I did enable the AMR on both the w850 and now the S500, but I have not seen any improvements. Actually I think its a tad worse on the w850 compared to before I enabled the AMR. I guess I'll try to flash sans AMR to see if I get an improvement. But that is for tomorrow's to-do.

As for the features of the S500 compared to the w580 other than the few games and few themes, IMO is not worth the credits to switch the firmwares. In playing around with the w580 software, the features are interesting to be honest. I like the pedometer feature. That seems great for the athletic peeps out there. The shake feature, I am unsure of, because of course the s500 does not have it hardware wise. And of course the walkman 2.0 is fun. But the s500 has A2DP, so that's good enough for me. Now Im just waiting on my 2gb M2 card to come in the mail so I can start loading up the tunes!

i've already downloaded the firmware for the s500i...the main and the FS...what do i need to do next in order to flash my phone?

Ranphi,

Thanks for the instructions, but I tried the hack and unfortunately it fails to work for me too.

I get 'please wait' the 1st time the phone is restarted and I have the default_update.xlm file in the other folder but 'please wait' fails to appear on subsequent restarts. I've followed the instructions to the letter and have the correct files in the phone 'other' folder.

I have a feeling the default_upgrade_davinci_W_CID51_52.zip file may be incorrect. Could you confirm that the correct one is posted? Maybe some phone firmwares require the other file that didn't work for you?

What do you think? Thanks for any help.

Jake

Hmmm... Well, I know I posted the file that worked for me, as I deleted the other one that didn't work for me before I posted my instructions to hofo.

However, maybe you're right and for some strange reason the file that didn't work for me might work for you. I don't know why this would be the case though, if you're trying to hack a S500i/W580i phone. Seems like the same file should work across the board for those 2 phone models...

If you wanna try it with the other file that did not work for me, I've uploaded it here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/4289609...D51_52.zip.html

Good luck! If you try this other file, please let me know what happens.

Thanks Ranphi,

I'll give it one last try with this file and update this post whether it works or not.

Themes were so much easier in the past!

UPDATE: RANPHI, The second file you posted worked for me!! The phone is now displaying 'please wait' as it copies the theme files over from the 'other folder'.

Thanks Again,

Jake

Wow! That one worked for you?!! How odd! hahahaha But I'm glad it fixed the problem for you. Did you hack a S500i/W580i? If so, I wonder why on earth that file would work for you and not for me?

So what themes were you able to successfully upload and use after the hack? Just curious.

I actually did this whole scenario a second time earlier today. I decided to go ahead and flash my black S500i to a W580i and then do the davinci hack on it to be able to upload Flash themes and it worked like a charm. (I used the same CID upgrade file that worked for me last time, too).

The Strobe theme looks freaking awesome, btw, on a black S500i!

Again, congrats on a successful hack! Really glad you got it working.

Another quick Q for original s500i owners, should the sub menu's on the day and night theme be green\white text on black background at night?

My main menu changes to green icons on black at night, but selecting an icon then switches the background to white in the text menu?

Ranphi - Yes - Flashed my S500i to W580i (Generic EUR 2) first, no probs. Now have the Everchanging theme running as it should & the night & day on (as above)

Bizarre about the file versions - tried the one you used twice and it didn't work. Glad the 2nd file you posted worked as it was the last chance I was going to give it before I gave up wasting my money. haha.

I think the W580i themes don't look good on the s500i due to the green keypad - each to their own, eh - but strobe is the best of the bunch.

Thanks,

Jake

Jake - Here's a link with pix of what Day and Night menu looks like at night from PhoneArena's review:

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Son...r_1767-p_2.html

Mine looks just like this on my S500i-flashed-to-W580i. Does yours look different?

Posted by: ranphi

Just in case anybody is interested -- TrackID works with a S500i flashed to W580i. The W580i firmware comes with TrackID and I just tried it out and it worked great.

First time I've ever used this little program. Pretty sweet!

The theme started working as it should about 5 mins after I posted yesterday.

It had the night wallpaper, night horizontal menu but day text menus. Next time I checked the night menu's were on as they should be.

All i get is an error message when i turn the phone on now and it doesnt let me get into the phone atall !! 'Network Configuration error please contact your network operator or service centre' no1 knows what to do to fix this please help !!

Buy another credit and reflash to the s500i firmware. Thats the only advice I can give. Maybe someone else may have an idea. GL!

Posted by: damos22

Thats what i did in the ened but i really really want trackID before i go on holiday the only reason i got the s500i was because the cpw told me it had trackID

Posted by: ranphi

Sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately, as you've already seen, the S500i does not come with TrackID. The W580i does and since it's so similar to the S500i, a lot of places that sell phones (or post phone specs, like GSMArena) were listing the specs for the 2 phones as being the same and that's led to some confusion for people.

I don't know of any way to get TrackID off of one phone and on to another. Not sure if anyone's figured out a way to do that or not.

At least you got your phone back in working order though. Better to have a functional phone without TrackID, than an unusable brick.

Indeed that is very true lol, i may send it back under mis-sold and get somethin like a k810i until the w580 is out

Mmm I just bought my S500 and got it flashed to W580 firmware. But I've been wondering; for the second step, JUST for the everchanging and day & night themes, I don't need to follow that link posted, right?
Just download ranphi's files and place them in their necessary directory, then add that .xml file into the Other folder, after completing the DaVinci hack, right?
And I know changing the firmware or flashing my phone will erase everything, but if i were to just upgrade the firmware through SEUS or something, would it erase the theme's or my data, along with making the DaVinci hack unusable? 'Cause when I updated my W900 and K800, it didn't delete any old files or anything.

~I wouldn't mind not being able to use the DaVinci hack anymore so long as I still have the Day & Night and Everchanging themes.

That's correct. The beginning of step 2 refers to Tan's instructions on how to upload Flash themes, in general, after hacking your phone.

Right. If the only themes you are interested in uploading to your phone after the davinic hack are Everchanging and DayandNight, then the files I uploaded will cover that for you.

To be honest, I am not entirely 100% sure about the answer to your last question. I know that changing/upgrading your firmware will kill the davinci hack and you won't be able to use it anymore without buying another set of credits from davinci and hacking your phone again. I read that multiple times while researching all this stuff.

Whether or not it would get rid of theme files you had already uploaded to your phone...I believe it will, but am not completely sure about that.

After researching all this and getting it working, I'm of the mind that I'm never upgrading the firmware on my phone because I don't want to lose anything I've done to it at this point.

Posted by: HellDemon

Haha yeah I can understand that XD
Hmmm well thanks for your response; I'm new to this so I wasn't 100% sure on what to do.

Well we'll just see if anyone who'se done this will upgrade their firmware; till then, I probably won't upgrade either.
Unless it was an upgrade that immensely patched it up, then in that case, I probably would.

Yeah, new firmwares can do great things (fix bugs, introduce new features, etc.), but unfortunately they can also introduce new bugs/problems. It's always a gamble with new firmwares...

I'm just planning on leaving mine as is unless someone discovers some really nasty problem with the current firmware that would heavily impact me. (We're talking an end-of-the-world-magnitude here).

I'm quite happy with my S500i-turned-W580i. I love having the Walkman app, TrackID and being able to easily upload any Flash-based themes I want onto it. I even bought some Motorola S9 bluetooth stereo headphones over the weekend to try out with my phone to see if it's good enough to replace my iPod nano.

Good luck if you decide to do the davinci hack!

Posted by: HellDemon

Hmm well there's one thing I don't understand...
It seems so simple to do the DaVinci hack; just buy credits, download the file you uploaded, log into the client, select the file, hold C while connecting the USB cable, then just applying it...
How could something like that go wrong? Unless a step was neglected; but otherwise, what can possibly misfire?

Weeeell...as with all thing tech, sometimes it just doesn't work. Or, at least it just doesn't go smoothly.

For instance, there are (at least) 2 different versions of the CID upgrade file to use with the davinci client to do the davinci hack. The first file I used didn't work for me and I had to buy more credits with davinci and then try it again with the other file (which worked, thank goodness).

I posted the file that worked for me and my S500i phone, but another person here (jake0120034) tried the hack and that file didn't work for him. The other file (the one that didn't work for me) ended up working for him.

You can just never be too sure about the way things are gonna go with stuff like this.

Mmmm so I take it there's no sure fire way to distinguish which file to use for each phone?

~Oooo unless ranphi's firmware was Generic Eu 2, like jake's, I think it might be due to the different region, although I don't know why it would require a different file. I'll hafta confirm this after I find out which firmware I have (I got someone in the store to do it for me, as buying a phone from them allows me to have any firmware I want free of charge [though that doesn't mean it'll work])

-Wotan server is back on and I looked at the different firmwares, and I have Generic America 1, but what's that ciph. off sorta thing for the second version?
Sry for all the questions, I'm sorta new to this >___<

Yeah, I don't know what the diff is between the 2 files. I couldn't find any info stating the differences while I was looking into all of this.

I used the Generic America 1 firmware from Wotan to flash my phone. As you noticed, Jake used a European firmware on his. Whether or not the region difference determines which of the 2 files to use, I don't know though. Sorry.

Posted by: kpjimmy

FYI: I too was curious about the ciph off thingy. I found out in my searchings that its called ciphering off. A feature of encrypting your phone calls. I would just use the generic one without the ciph off thing, but thats me.

Posted by: HellDemon

Ahhh well I guess that doesn't really matter for me then seeing as I don't really know which version of America 1 I have anyways :P

But yeah, so I guess I'll use that first file you posted. I'm praying it works though, cuz I can't spend too much money (I just got my W900 and my wallet stolen)
