Swapping SIM results

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, as a quick test for those out there considering swapping out the SIM in the iPhone into a second or back up phone I have good news. I swapped out the SIM in my iPhone for the SIM in my V3xx. I was able to make phone calls and receive calls on the V3xx with no problems. I tried browsing on the V3xx but it errored out for no data service.

On a side note I put the V3xx's SIM in my iPhone and booted up. The iPhone gave me an error that the SIM was incorrect and that I needed to reactivate via iTunes. I cancelled out of that and was able to surf via WLAN, listen to music, videos, etc. The only thing that didn't work was the cellular. Keep in mind the SIM was deactivated today when I did the phone swap. No telling what would happen if I inserted a good SIM (other than the iPhone SIM). Also keep in mind that I did activate the iPhone earlier today. I don't think you can get around the initial activation.

where is this sim card tray located?

Posted by: feesh

Please try the data portion if possible, tethering preferably, that would be a huge help

Yea, thats how it's starting to look.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to get a new SIM when I get the Iphone. I don't plan on purchasing now ....most likely holiday season. So hopefully the activation thing will be a dead issue by then.

How does the sim card from iPhone looks like? ThinkSecret posted a picture of disassembled iPhone with a 3G sim card. What do you guys think of this????

http://thinksecret.com/archives/iph...e/iphone08.html

Posted by: machiavell1

So provided the phone is activated by someone who doesn't mind paying the charges (ie someone looking to sell their iPhone on eBay), and then sold on, another sim can be put in? and does it have to be an AT&T sim post activation or can it be any sim? Anyone tried this?

Thanks

Posted by: duffyanneal

The SIM card looked identical to the one from my V3xx. The SIM card is accessed from the top of the iPhone. You'll see a slot and small hole on one side. You insert a paper clip or pin into the hole and a tray with the SIM card pops out.

I did try browsing with the built-in browser of the V3xx. No luck there...no data service.

Posted by: Alex318

That's all I needed to know I don't plan to use my back up phone for internet or text msg, as long as the voice part of the old phone works I'm set.

Posted by: Petino

Dont get excited bout the 3g sim, cingular/at&t includes that with any phone by default now as they did a way with the regular sims, you can go to wal-mart and buy a 20 dollar go-phone and itll have a 3g sim with it.

Posted by: EliteABombAZ

So... why don't you guys just activate it with Pick your plan, then take out the sim, and put in your old sim... wouldn't that work?

Might.. But you only get to chose 'pick your plan' as an option if you have bad credit.

Other than the whole you have to have bad/no credit deal...

Posted by: mspalacios

I assume the original poster has swapped the SIMS and both were at&t SIMs... right?

Yes they were both AT&T.

It's a bummer that the data won't work on another phone. I was hoping I'd be able to use the SIM in another phone for occassional tethering.

Did you try playing around with the data settings at all? (wap@cingulargprs.com vs. isp@cingulargps.com, for instance?)

good news\, thanks.

Is that info even accessible on the iphone?

on the moto v3's it is. I forget how to get there. I last a razr in 2004.

Just got my iphone and I activated it through itunes but now I'm in limbo because I'm one of the people who is porting and old number from another service an I have to wait at least 24 hours. So I popped out the SIM and put it in my cingular Nokia N75 and it works fine. Connected to MediaNet and check my email. I got this weird text message though:

From:1 000 000 000

message:
smpp-vip.allntxacds01.attwireless.net:5400?f=0&v=300&m=2018355167&p=VlZXVltVw==&t=2015355167:A:AMS_NB_VIP11:ms03::59359

So SIM swapping definately works

I was referring to the phone into which the iPhone SIM was swapped. Most other phones let you change these settings, and I was hoping for a configuration that would allow me to access data on another phone using the iPhone's SIM.

Good news!

I got a few of these weird messages on my BlackJack at one point but they stopped.

Can you tell us what data settings you're using on your Nokia?

Posted by: Mr. Bond

I understand all of this, but what would happen if you purchased it as a go phone, swapped the SIM into your contracted phone, and called CS and asked for the different data plan?

you cant buy it as a gophone, you pay in full

Well I guess as long as the iphone was already activated, you can swap out the SIM and use it but you would probalby lose some iphone functions like internet, but ipod and pix should still work.

The Settings were the default factory settings (wap.cingular) from cingular. This is a locked cingualr phone I bought from the store.

If you have no/bad credit, the phone can be activated on Go Phone Pick Your Plan...

Posted by: cool1525

I activated the iPhone with the sim that came with it........tried to then put in another active cingular/att sim card but it gave me an error message......when i put it into the phone, it said that it was not correct and gave me an error

the real question is whether someone can just go buy a "GoPhone Pick Your Plan" card and add the $20 data plan and then put that into the iPhone and use it sans contract......that would be my ideal scenario

i know that but i think he asked if you buy the phone itself as a gophone, maybe i was wrong

Do you have to push in hard on the sim tray with a pin?? Its not opening and I'm scared I might break something....

Are you telling me you put your v3xx SIM inside the Iphone and the Data worked? Did everything work? Calls? Visual Voice?

Or are you talking about Vice Versa?

Posted by: captnoir

This may have been covered but did anyone notice the 3g flame on the sim card, what's the deal with that if it's only edge? I know the availability is there through att, but why even put it on the sim for the iphone?

I used the iphone to make a few calls (5:00mins) and then i put the sim from the iphone(already activated on iPhone plan) and then switched it to the v3xx(twice)(back and forth) and used media net,and made 2 phone calls

Media Net Loaded and went to the media net home

Call was fine

Didnt check Voicemail.

Somebody told me a while back that ALL new Sim cards are 3G Sims whether or not you have a 3G phone.

This is good to hear.

Some of us with smartphones (I have a BlackJack) have MediaMax plans and use wap.cingular to access the "real" internet beyond cingular's WAP. I use it to surf the web with PIE and can tether my phone to my laptop and use it as a modem.

I'm really hoping someone can verify that this will still work if I insert my iPhone SIM into my BlackJack.

Posted by: cool1525

I'd love to know the other way around.....if the iPhone is activated, can you just go buy a GoPhone sim and stick it in? Pick your plan does exist, as we already know, it's just that ATT is being very stingy as to who they let have it.....would be the perfect solution for me though as i'm not getting rid of my blackberry 8830 so quickly......

Posted by: machiavell1

Or, if the AT&T sim/iPhone is activated, can you take a foreign carrier/another carrier's sim and use that? ie is it truly locked to AT&T or are they more concerned about getting you to keep your contract up.

Posted by: suthurnlatino

Remember all you need to have bad credit is no social aka 00000000000000 or 11111111111111 etc get the idea? Can anyone report any success using a nonPreloaded Sim in the iPhone?

Posted by: Flyinace2000

So can we safely say that an iPhone sim card in an regular cingular phone (or unlocked phone) still can use data and voice?

Please post results with it being the other way around, what does it do with another SIM other than the preinstalled SIM from Apple in the IPhone? Is it before or after your Itunes activation? Thanks in advance.

Can someone pop a t-mobile, dobson, suncom, or foreign SIM into this puppy to see if it works?

Posted by: vdubguy

It won't work. I got it activated on prepaid and I have a post paid line, popped in the sim and it does nothing, cant make calls or anything.

how did you activate on prepaid?

Posted by: wiggina

Another set of flavor...

1) activated new line, standard service
2) popped out iphone sim, put in sim from blackberry (also on ATT - only about 2 months old)
3) iphone reports incorrect sim, but everything (save phone) works

I was hoping it would be a one time activation, but there must be a pref file somewhere (com.apple.iphone.sim ) that stores the damned number. So I guess I still have to play the CRU to IRU game come monday.

I just verified that this works. Currently tethered to my blackjack via bluetooth with Sim that came installed in Iphone.

iPhone sim works great in my unlocked Nokia N73 (IMAP mail Opera Mini )

So, to confirm:

1. You purchase iphone and activated postpaid
2. Took iphone SIM and put into Smartphone
3. Tethered smartphone data works with iphone SIM card

--That's great news. I'm using a simple CU500 for my phone and tethering needs (OQO and m1210). Having the iphone as a more will fill in a nice gap in my non-smartphone life.

We still need to find out about pre-paid cards trying to put data plans on them to allow mostly data and occasional phone use on the iphone.
--For those who were lucky enough to get pre-paid iphone activations, anyone with the data plan on it?

I'm awaiting the 2-4 weeks for my online purchase....blah.

Exactly

Posted by: yuyjust

so this is how I understand it.

- after you activated iphone (either iphone plan or pick your plan) you will be able to pop out sim card from iphone and put it in your back up phone (any att phone) voice and data (plus tetering) still working on back up phone.

- after you activated iphone you cannot put in any other active att sim or other carrier's sim in iphone. It just won't work

- you cannot use any sim at all before you activate you iphone by itunes. So you cannot just buy iphone and pop in sim card and expect it to work. you have to activate it by itunes first.

I guess its not too bad. Just buy blackjack (or any 3G phone) via ATT store and get subsidized price then at the same time buy iphone at the store too. Let the rep activate your account with blackjack. Come home, fire up itune 7.3 activated iphone on your newly open account, extend your contract by couple of hour : ), then enjoy your iphone. Then you can use blackjck or other phone that you just bought for back up and tether with 3G speed (as long as you live in 3G area). Thanks ATT for including 3G sim with iphone : )

Or you can buy iphone and activate at home, activate it on pick your plan, and enjoy no commitment iphone (tho this option i dont see much benefit as you cannot unlock iphone and use it on other network anyway, only upside for pick your plan I can see right now is you are waiting for someone to unlock iphone so you can ditch ATT without ETF, or you have already have your main phone from other carrier and just want to have iphone as a toy and web browsing device, so stop paying for it is as easy as call and have your ccount terminate)

how does that all sound ???? did i miss anything

I tried pairing an iPhone with my mac and it showed no available bluetooth services(browse, send file) from the device, meaning that apple has disabled the ability to tether with the iPhone. Perhaps someone will come out with a way around it. Also, I don't think that AT&T has special '3G sims' as much as they just brand things 3G. I've gotten 3G speeds off of 3G phones without a fancy 3G labeled card. I think it's merely some cingular branding.

Sorry if this was mentioned before, but there is just too much info to read.

Does the Iphone Sim (as we know it works on other phones) use 3G on 3G capable phones?

Yes, I get 3G service in my Blackjack with the iphone sim.

Yes i was on 3G on the v3xx, The 3G sim is the latest and will get whatever the sim is capable of.

What happens if you have two activated iPhones and their associated SIM cards and you swap SIMs between them? Will they both still work like normal?

Posted by: jorsuss

has anyone tried to use their iphone sim in a backup phone to send mms? this is the main reason i would swap. i tried it and data and texts work on the backup phone but the mms would not send. they just try to send but never go through.

Posted by: californiajay

Have have an active Cingular prepaid SIM that I have tried in the iphone. When powering up, it says that it needs to be activated through itunes. It will not connect to edge either.

Posted by: fletch33

i took my iphone sim card and put it into a smartphone and was able to make calls and text but can not get data. i called 2 different service reps at att and they both said that i can not use my iphone sim card to get data on a smartphone because it uses a different server. i was told i would have to activate a different account like in a family plan and add data to it for data service to work and that smartphone data service is much more expensive than the iphone data service.

the strange thing is that when i originally put my iphone sim card in the smartphone the internet worked fine for about 5 minutes and then suddenly said i didnt have service. this tells me that it is possible but there must be a hack or a setting to change to fool att into not knowing that i am pulling data any differently than i would with my iphone.

i would sure like to figure this out.

Posted by: RogerPodacter

why would att even do this? data is data, regardless of which phone you use. in my view, every EDGE unlimited data plan should be the same price, cause we are all limited by the same speed cap. weird.

Posted by: misha24

it should work. My friend users an e62 and got the iphone. He put the sim in the e62 to use it during working hours and then back into the iphone for the weekend. he uses data constantly with the Good network.

Posted by: fletch33

yeah my question to them was that it seemed to me that the iphone would be capable of pulling a lot more data presumably than a smartphone if i were watching utbue on it all day etc... so why would they care if i wanted to use my sim in my smartphone for minute. i was told it was because the iphone uses a different server than the smart/pda phones. so it goes back to my question above. why was i able to use data foe a few minutes when i first put my sim in the smartphone and then it suddenly stopped? it obviously did something right for a minute. did my smartphone suddenly register something to att that alerted the server that it was not the iphone and if so i would think i could reg edit or change a setting to keep it fooled?

Posted by: wantiphone

Anyone that can answer Fletch's question?

Posted by: Flyinace2000

We need someone with insider knowledge on how the plans are set up and what each data plan really does.

What is even dumber is that fact that data is data is data. It is not like iPhone data is different from smart phone data. Bits are bits. Even voice calls are bits.

Posted by: fletch33

i was able to figure this out over the weekend and everything works great now. i made some changes to the web session settings and i was able to use my sim card in a krzr, slvr, and a smartphone and the data and everything worked great. i can post the settings i used for these phones if anyone needs them. i am very happy to get this working since having a sim card was one of the benefits i considered when deciding to leave verizon.

Posted by: Flyinace2000

Of course post what you have done. Don't be silly SHARE!!!

Thanks

Posted by: enklined

I've taken out my iPhone SIM and put it in my w810i and have been able to male/receive calls, AS WELL AS USE DATA (surf the net using Opera Mini, and download Google Maps for mobile - the java app). I haven't tried to tether, or send MMS yet, though.

Oh, and my w810i is an unbranded (therefore, unlocked) model - not cingulars.

Posted by: Flyinace2000

Glad this works, now if i could only "Add" the iphone data package to my RadioShack employee line i would be all set.
