Gmail on iPhone

I am having a weird issue with Gmail on the iPhone. Every message that I sent out I see in my inbox as a new message. It looks like I am getting cc'd on everything. I checked the cc options in the settings and they are turned off. I tried doing the standart gmail account and also gmail via pop and its the same issue. Everything I sent out I get a copy of it in my inbox as it was a new message.

Is this happening to anyone else? Has anyone found a solution?

Go to the mail settings and enable "recent" mode for gmail .

Posted by: arhemed

recent mode is enabled but its still doing it

Yeah, I've been trying to figure this one out too. I also tried the recent mode in gmail, but to no avail. Please post if you find a solution....

I've got the same issue. Did anyone submit this bug report to Apple yet? Any way of fixing it?

This has been driving me nuts too. On blackberries you could set up a filter in your BIS account but there's no such solution for the iPhone. Granted I haven't been able to log into My Account since activating the iPhone. ATT reports the following error:

L164: We are sorry, but we are experiencing a temporary system error that prevents us from retrieving your account information.

Hopefully the first software update will address this issue...

good i thought i was going nutz

Same problem here. Does anyone know where this is coming from?

Posted by: grdella

it is a problem with gmail on blackberries as well as said above.
One fix is to enable a filter on your gmail account for your own email address.
Downfall to that is that you cannot email yourself something but it ends the issue of being cc'd all the time. On blackberries it is not too bad because you can set up a filter on the bis server so you cannot send an email to yourelf with the blackberry but still can on the desktop. Putting the filter at gmail blicks all mail from yourself no matter what. But it is a solution.

wow I never knew that this happened lol I just tried my gmail account on my iphone and got the same problem. hopefully they can find some way of fixing it

Good call grdella. That solved it.

Yea gmail has always done this...
It is because gmail mail is sorted in conversations.
I thought by now they would have improved there pop support.

glad it worked for you because for some reason it is not working for me!!!!
can you tell me how you set up your filter in gmail...i must be missing something because my filter is set up to archive it so i could still see the email in "all mail" and figured it would not send it to the phone but it does. maybe i have to delete it automatically but not having the ability to email myself stinks

Posted by: amartins02

This happens because gmail keeps a copy of everything. I think there is a setting in gmail under forwarding and pop tab. It says keep a copy in gmail's inbox, that's for emails accessed with pop. SO when you send a pop message its....well...going to keep a copy in your inbox which you receive as a new message. So when you receive your email or send an email choose archive in that selection box in settings. That way you still have record of emails sent or received via pop but, it will go to the archived folder and not your inbox. That should prevent a copy in the inbox.

there is no true solution. I speculate google will relaese a gmail app for iphone as they did for BB.

I just want Gmail to announce IMAP/push for iPhone. I'm sick of reading the damn e-mails I send and having old e-mails repopulate my Inbox. Disabling recent mode doesn't work well at all.

Posted by: illution

Indeed... i wish gmail just go IMAP way... I want to have my gmail on my native Symbian email client as well... don't feel like going to the gmail applet (even though it's wonderful) everytime I wanna check my mail and i really don't wanna deal with the crappiness of POP3

Posted by: brinox

same problem for me here too - i even have my pop settings set to move my read messages out of the inbox, and i STILL get any emails i send in my inbox on my iphone... grrr!

Posted by: jbellny

The reason is actually pretty simple. As gmail doesn't use folders, only tags, the iPhone doesn't handle sent items as you would expect. When you send an email, gmail 'tags' it as a 'sent item' but when it is processed on the iPhone it appears as an 'inbox' item since gmail really only has a single folder.

Kind of a simplified answer, but that's sort of what's happening.

I'm using m.gmail.com through Safari to access my Gmail - way better than dealing with Mail and you can archive things. Works well and is extremely fast. Just bookmark your inbox and it will take you in every time.

Blackberries have the same "sent mail" issue with Gmail. But on Blackberries, you can setup a filter on the Blackberry server side that restricts incoming emails that has a "From" address the same as your Gmail address. Stops this issue stone cold.

if apple can install an additional apps, Gmail java client works like charm i'm sure you've tried it with your K790?

Posted by: chakraj

If you dis able the recent mode . you will not have to look at email sent from the device however email sent from your computer will still show up in your inbox. its not perfect but its better than, YAAAHHHOOOO

Posted by: neptunet

No Java on the iPhone, but yes the gmail java app does work like a charm. Like somebody already speculated, I am hoping that Google will release an iPhone proper gmail app or at least optimized web widget of some form. I'm sure something will happen in time, but until then, POP3 is definitely not the way to go!

if you create a filter in gmail for your own address as i indicated prior in the thread then you will not have a copy sent to your phone.
You have to choose "delete email" option for the filter of your own email address and it work perfectly.
just cannot email yourself.

Setting up the following Gmail filter...

matches: from: youremailaddress@gmail.com
do this: Skip the Inbox (Archive it)
...does not work for iPhone, though sent messages no longer appear on Gmail.com--chat threads aren't revived into the gmail.com inbox, if started back up by the youremailaddress@gmail.com on iPhone or on the gmail.com website.

Any other bright ideas? I've tried turning off recent mode, but can only get through to e-mails from October of 2006. The remaining e-mails won't download.

like i said only a couple posts prior... chose "delete" instead of "skip inbox" and it will not send a copy to your inbox.
how's that for a bright idea.
not sure what your last paragraph is referring to though. If you clarify that maybe i can help.

Actually, on the BB you can enable the filter at the BIS level so sent mail does not appear as new mail.

I like to keep my sent emails archived though, so I prefer not to use the delete filter.

The best solution I used is to set up my pop forwarding on gmail to send a copy of incoming new messages to another email address (my isp email, which I dont use, for example). That way I only get new gmail messages on my iphone, though creating emails will be from my isp's email address and not my gmail address.

Thanks, grdella... I do want to keep my sent e-mails, however.

Not sure if this has been posted, but there is a tutorial located at:

http://catcubed.com/2007/07/23/gmai...2-the-tutorial/

If you follow these instructions, all the iphone/gmail woes are solved. You get:

complete syncing between MacOSX mail program, gmail and iphone
Emails you send out don't appear in your inbox

Requires setting up an IMAP account (which no one will ever see, and you don't ever have to check). I recommend fast-email.com

Hope this helps!
