You will have to have a seperate GPS reciever. There is no usable GPS unit on the device.

Note: This initiative is effectively dead. With proper drivers and radio ROM (see below) the GPS chipset can be utilized by the OS. However the chipset isn't connected to an antenna, a mod may require a power source, and research suggests that the input pins have been intentionally compromised at the factory. An effective mod has a high likelyhood of physically bricking the phone. As a consequence this is no longer an active project.

I wonder, why would they bother to put a GPS chip in the device, only to break it by intentionally damaging it, and just sell the phone by saying it doesn't have one? Rather than just not putting one in? Some companies seem like they just have unlimited cash.

I know Intel does this to processors as well, if they run out of a certain "low end" line, they start to take the high end ones and cripple them intentionally and sell it at the lower price.

most HTC phones dont have a built in GPS reciever you would have to get a third party bluetooth GPS reciever to get your tomtom or any other nav program to be working properly

Thanks for the replies, so what you are saying is that i need to buy a bluetooth gps that will run with my TYTN. So there is no issue of not being able to run it right? A friend of mine has the 8525 cingular one and he runs it with the bluetooth gps.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Further to the other responses above... I have had both unlocked and Rogers Tytn and have used both successfully with my Globalsat bluetooth receiver and iGuidance software. It works very well, in fact.

Hope that allays your fear about this.

Don't mean to Hi Jack this thread but I'm also looking at the SoftBank X01HT unlocked. I plan to use it on T-Mobile but I was wondering if there would be any issues getting all functions to work because my research on the Cingular 8525 showed that the ROM had to be flashed for it to work on T-Mobile. Wondering if it was the same with the SoftBank ROM Did you have any issues with your phone? What area are you in and what service provider do you use, if you don't mind telling me. . I'd prefer to have some kind of warranty if something goes wrong and flashing a ROM voids that.

And to stay on subject, what's this about GPS being installed on the TyTN but disabled? Is this the same as the Trinity's QualCom chip?

I ended up purchasing a bluetooth enabled GPS module for my SoftBank X01HT. Works great.

You mean an external GPS receiver? Which one? Or are you saying that you installed a chip in the phone? If so, please give details!

I ended up purchasing the Holux GPSlim 236 device (bluetooth enabled GPS).
