cannot load apps to bb 8800 from pc

hi, i am new to blackberries and i am having trouble loading applications onto my 8800. the desktop manager/ application loader tells me that the "blackberry desktop system software does not have blackberry device software for the device that you have connected to the computer" but this is the software that came with the phone i bought new. any help/ recommendations on how i should fix this
