FAQ firmware upgrade

I am very new to the symbian os
and was just wondering if everytime there is a firmware upgrade the phone has to be sent back to SE or if that can be done by oneself?
I do seriously hope that i can do it myself if not that would be a reason to sell my P800

Technically, there is nothing preventing home users from performing the upgrades themselves. As a matter of policy though, it seems that Sony Ericsson is restricting the release of firmware upgrades to authorized vendors only. Too bad. It's a real pain to have to ship off your pride-and-joy everytime you need a bug fix.
