Debranding Nokia 6300b (RM-222) w/ 6300 (RM-217) firmware

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Moshi

Hey all, Not sure if this is a true debrand but my main goal was to be able to use my own MP3's as ringtones on my new Fido 6300.

I made sure no Nokia software was running and connected the phone via USB. Opened up NSS and clicked the magnifying glass, all my phone info came up. I went to tools, factory settings, clicked to highlight the "Full Factory" radio button and clicked reset.

Closed NSS, rebooted the phone...had PTT and a new IM icon, could set any MP3 as a tone, changed the theme to Nokia.nth.

That's it. Now I can use any MP3 as a tone. Just make sure to take your SIM out or you will erase all of your contacts on the SIM.

Posted by: phillis_c

That is great news, will your phone still has the Fido stiuff during start-up?

I want to experiment more by installing Euro PPM (RM-217) onto the RM-222

Posted by: Moshi

No Fido stuff at start-up. I get the Nokia hands. The Fido theme was also erased. I do get ROGERS in light greay just under the battery, but you hardly notice it.

Posted by: Moshi

Just noticed that the email client is also there...Just set up gmail! sweet.

Posted by: shubjero

Hey all.

After much frustration with Fido tech support. I decided to flash my phone as per instructions in this forum.

I am happy to say that my IM program still works and I am able to set mp3s as ring tones and the built-in email client is working great with gmail.

I will post more details when I get time.

Posted by: Moshi

Good news Shubjero! Everything's working great on mine too!

Posted by: san-mig

can anyone tell me where to debrand or flash a nokia 6300 from fido in bc?

Posted by: Moshi

You can debrand it yourself if you'd like. There are instructions on this forum.

Posted by: phillis_c

I did exactly what you said.. it says "done" and reset, after rebooting the phone. The Fido stuff still appear.

same here. NSS v. 1.0.38.10.

edit : after putting my SIM card back in, the extra apps have become available. Go figure.

Posted by: aznfreak

hmmmmm wonder if i can flash it to chinese version

Posted by: phillis_c

I am scratching my head now.... because... I want to get rid of the Fido customization, this is the summary...

- Phoenix/NSS detects the phone as RM-217
- NSU after update product code to 0515597 (HK), Traditional/Simplified available. Fido customization still there.
- Flashed with 4.70 EMEA firmware -> bricked (downgrade always brick)
- Dead Phone USB Flash w/ RM-222 4.71 Fido Firmware -> worked, showed up as RM-217
- No customization, music player and other things in the standy screen
- Changed the product code to 0515597 (HK), no Fido customization
- Phone still detects as RM-217

My conclusion is... I get a Fido RM-217 unless I can test out the availability of 850Mhz. You can get rid of the Fido stuff by performing a Dead Phone USB Flash because it will wipe everything.

That is strange. Before I did mine I had a Fido start-up. After I had the Nokia start-up. The Fido theme is still on the phone, but it's not activated.

Posted by: phillis_c

More things going on...

As soon as I flashed my phone with Fido's firmware, there is an error message about the "image", and everything was reset to "default". I found out that I lose all the built-in ring tones, themes (even nokia.nth), and calculator. At that time I realized I installed a crippled firmware.

So I flashed with the CMCC Chinese firmware because it is the only 4.71 available. I then changed the product code to HK with NSS and flashed again with NSU. However, now NSU says the software I have on my phone is latest and "Reinstall" is not available.

Just weird....

Posted by: Moshi

@ phillis_c

That is weird! I can't really comment though because I didn't flash my phone. I just did a factory reset to remove the crippled {dumb} Fido put on it.

{Note from Mod: be creative but NO SWEARING!}

Posted by: phillis_c

After flashing the RM-217 firmware, I can confirm that I lost 850Mhz because I was testing it in underground parkade. Where my T237 or N80 has full signals and the 6300 has 1 bar.

I will be exchanging for a new 6300 too because I just realized there is a crack on the camera lens, and i just took it out for 1 day.

I will be performing the same thing on the newer phone, and will post some feedback.

From what I understand, the customization is somehow seperate from the main firmware. In Phoenix, there is a "image" file, which I believe is the operator customization. Therefore NSU will only update the main firmware to that particular region. The only way to change customization is to use Phoenix.

Posted by: phillis_c

OK.. I just got a replacement phone from Fido. Initial "Scan" from NSS showed it was a RM-222, as soon as I used "Full Factory", the phone became RM-217.

The Fido shut down/start up logo is still there.

I do have a question for those who got rid of Fido customization. Will the Fido logo start up without your SIM in? I believe this is due to the old old 407 SIM I have.

Posted by: san-mig

how do u debrand it? do u need a cable?

Posted by: Moshi

phillis_c, I just booted mine up without the SIM in and it booted up with the Nokia start-up.

Posted by: phillis_c

You need a USB to Mini-USB cable, and you can try to Debrand it using NSS.

As soon as I clicked "Factory Reset", my phone turned into the RM-217 from RM-222.

Posted by: san-mig

is there any place in vancouver that does debrand or flash the nokia 6300? dont have any cable at all

THANK YOU SO MUCH! for sharing this on Hofo. I followed your instructions and IT WORKED! For some strange reason, when I got my phone from Fido, during the start-up it showed me those two hands and the Nokia sign. However, I was still unable to set mp3 ringtones. I followed your instructions and now my phone doesn't have any restrictions of any sorts.

I still see the Fido theme and wallpapers and such in my phone but now I am able to use mp3 ringtones, & the PTT and IM icons show up as well. Looks like some people posting on this thread still see Fido's software and theme even after resetting their phone; however, the restrictions should've been cleared.

Once again, Thank you very much and I truly appreciate your help

Posted by: phillis_c

A Mini-USB cable goes about $15 in Staples/FS/BB etc...

Posted by: phillis_c

The Fido logo will appear only if you use Fido's theme. As soon as you change to other themes, you won't be able to see any Fido logos.

Now... I am waiting to get rid of the Fido junk being pre-installed on the phone that used up as much as 1.2MB of space once proper firmware is out for Phoenix. We only have 8MB to begin with and 1.2MB is a bit.

Why don't you use a memory card? Nokia 6300 can support upto a maximum of 2gb memory card storage.

Posted by: MrAL

Does anyone know where to get the NSS Software? Is it free?

Posted by: MrAL

Hi. I've heared romours that if you flash/debrand your nokia 6300 phone from Fido, you will lose the 850 band and will not work well in Canada. Is this true? Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

Posted by: Moderator HF 25

Please Note that:

- I've merged 3 threads in the same topic into 1. DO NOT START A NEW ONE WITHOUT CHECKING THE EARLIER ONES FIRST!

- A Fido 6300 will still be LOCKED to Fido after flash it w/ other variant firmware

- If a 6300b (RM-222) is flashed w/ 6300 (RM-217) firmware, try to toggle the GSM850/1800/1900 in the band selector of Phoenix (i.e. the Nokia PST) to see if GSM850 works.

Posted by: Moshi

I've searched for the main difference between RM-217 and RM-222 to see if the bands are affected...I have sent an email to Nokia to see if they can shed some light on this..

Posted by: phillis_c

NSS can be [Google]

As soon as you do a Factory Reset, the phone will change to RM-217

I will run some test tonight to see if I lose 850Mhz.

As long as you are in the city, 1900Mhz is good enough.

Posted by: phillis_c

NSS is a tool developed by a third party for use with the Nemesis box. It is not made by Nokia. I guess you can all Google for it.

I can confirm with the following:
- 850Mhz is pretty much lost when I tested the phone in Point Roberts where Rogers 1900Mhz coverage is minimal. I am getting 1 to 2 bars.
- I am unable to use Phoenix because for some reason it does not let me select the band.
- I removed the Fido theme, wallpaper, screen saver via the use of MobiMB.
- Fido's pre-defined bookmarks cannot be removed.

Posted by: san-mig

ok, i have found the nss software, how do u set it up? i tried it and it gives me error on the bottom.... when u first install it there are several selections, which one should i choose?

Posted by: MrAL

Hmm.. So i guess the 6300 will still work well in toronto if i get it unlocked/unbranded? I'm using fido.

Posted by: Moshi

LOL...Here's the reply I got from Nokia regarding RM-217 and RM-222...

"the information you requested regarding the difference between the RM-217 and RM-222 is considered proprietary and cannot be shared with the public.

We apologize for the inconvenience."

Thanks for doing the tests phillis_c

Posted by: MontrealFidoGuy

Is it 100% sure we lose 850Mhz when debranding with NSS?

Posted by: MontrealFidoGuy

Someone answered me with this:

"You cannot loose the 850 Mhz, it's an hardware thing. You cannot also convert a 900Mhz phone to 850 by changing the software.
Using NSS just reset the setting like a reset on your phone menu but a little more deeply by bringing back the functions fido hides.
This is not a firmware flash."

Is it true? I'm just worried not to lose the 850MHz by debranding with NSS ... Thanks

Posted by: Moshi

To me MontrealFidoGuy is correct. Fido gets the 6300b from Nokia with the 850/1800/1900 bands and puts it's own touches on it...If you could change the bands using NSS why wouldn't people in the Canada just get phones from other countries and change the bands? I've seen a ton of threads about "should I or can I use a _____ phone from _______ in Canada?" The replies are usually, "yes, but your reception would stink because of no 850 band."

Posted by: MrAL

this is another thread that cleared everything i need to know about unlocking and unbranding the Nokia 6300... hope it helps...

I know it is impossible to convert a 850 phone into 900. However, reality is telling me that (twice) by using NSS to do a factory reset, the phone will change from RM-222 (6300b) into RM-217 (6300). I can also successfully install APAC RM-217 firmware without bricking my phone.

So... I guess there is something wrong with either the phone or Nokia.

I did it exactely as above and it worked perfectly.
I still have the Fido IM icon + the new/by default icon, the email client, PTT. I also kept the Fido profile. I see Fido logo operator under the battery. I also kept all IM, SMS, MMS settings. I still have to check if I can use the MP3 as ringtones (my main goal as well) ... but I'm sure it'll work

ugh

you require an extra box called nemesis to unlock??

does anyone in the toronto area has this box that I can use?

HELP plz

fellow 6300er

Posted by: PeterG

Can anyone who has done the NSS confirm the 850 was not disabled ? (Or is it even possible to tell on the phone, without doing an elevator test) ?

Posted by: player911

having 850 or 900 is hardware.

What happens is that the carrier blocked certain bands to make it harder to switch and/or make higher up models seem more lucrative.

Want an example. Motorola. V300/V400/V500/V600.
All based on the same hardware, just some were more restricted by software. Thats why you can take a V300, put a V600 flash on it, and essentially have a V600 in a V300 shell.

The phone is probably able to use all bands, yet just restricted. This firmware prolly came from a European model which 850 was not used, so its disabled.

Posted by: Grooveher

anyone in the toronto area using NSS?

Posted by: phillis_c

AFAIK, Nokia is not in the business of firmware tweaking. There is an actual hardware difference between the the B (North America) version and the acutal (World) version.

To unlock the SP lock on the 6300, you need to use a box called the MT-Box. NSS can only read and reset your phone to factory.

SP unlocking on BB5 phones is still in the early stages...It has been going on for years. People are very close but there are still a few bugs. Once it is solved, expect to see unlocking services being posted everywhere. The boxes cost a lot of $$ and they need to make there investment pay off!

Posted by: cyc66

I used NSS to factory reset my Nokia 6300 and everything is fine except I was no longer receiving MMS messages. I found the setting "Allow MMS reception" and set it to "Yes" from "In home network" and I received all my MMS messages. This is fine but I'd rather have the home network setting work properly. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Posted by: phillis_c

I don't use MMS so I couldn't answer you.

Is your phone shows up as RM-222 or RM217 after you use NSS?

Posted by: ldp04180

hmmm..interesting topic debranding..will give it a shot

Posted by: N|KO

After debranding shows as 217 and the reception is weaker...eh..

Mine is also RM-217 after debranding but my signal strength was unaffected. I'm in DT Toronto, I get strong signal everywhere...In the elevator up to the 32 floor of the office, on subway platforms...everywhere.

Posted by: ItemFinder

I'm going to flash mine to a RM-222 firmware. Any idea which one to use? Fido is obviously locked, but there are no US product codes; only some Mexican ones.

Posted by: MrAL

This forum is getting confusing. Some people are saying the signal gets better after debranding and some people says it gets worse. Who to believe.....

anyways..

I put this code in my Fido locked 6300.. *#0000# and it says..

Nokia 6300
V 04.71
28-02-07
RM-222

Language:
V 04.71
28-02-07
RM-217

Does anyone else get this? How come mine shows both RM 222 and 217??

Posted by: ItemFinder

WEIRD. I think I'll stay away from the debranding until a stable solution comes out.

Posted by: phillis_c

When you press *#0000# and see RM-222 and RM-217 is normal. For this phone, I am starting to agree to what player911 says. Maybe Nokia is cutting corner and use use the firmware to limit reception of 850/900. The hardware on the 6300 itself MAYBE a quad-band capable phone.

Normally, if you try to cross-flash the firmware from the "world" phone into the "B" version, you will most like brick your phone.

This phone however is odd, firmware can be cross-flashed back and forth without bricking. I had no issues going back to North America firmware and Asia firmware during the initial stage.

About reception, without the use of a box, there is no way for me to toggle individual band. I "assume" 850 is disabled because the RM-217 may not have the programming to use 850Mhz.

There is no "stable" solution, when you use NSS and Phoenix, this is the "non-official" way of hacking.

So far, I am happy because I need the Chinese support.

i am very new to all this stuff and i need to get my 6300 unlcoked to work with rogers. i am going to bring it to a guy to unlock it for me he wants close to 90 $ to do it. i wanna make 100% sure i dont lose my 850. what box are u talking about and what should i ask this guy before he fcks up my phone

Mine showed exactly same thing. I got my 6300 last week.

Posted by: Moderator HF 25

One again, you guys wanna be careful after hacking the product code and flash it with the RM-217 variants: Must use the Phoenix (or 3rd party equivalent) to toggle the GSM850/1800/1900 in the band selector because by default, RM-217 comes w/ the GSM900/1800/1900 selected.

And, things is slightly DIFFERENT from Motorola too even though the idea is the same. It isn't like an end-user accessible item in the phone's UI allowing you switching the band right on the phone.

It's isn't the case w/ Nokia triband models - they AREN'T simply "quadband ready" w/ crippling band on-demand and we've debunk such claim many times w/ scientific proof like in http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...2&page=10&pp=15

You've said it better! I rather wait for Dejan to come up w/ the sure way like he does w/ DCT3, 4 and now a few earlier BB5 models.

Posted by: flipflash77

Hello all,

So I've gone ahead and successfully reset the 6300's settings to factory using NSS, and have enabled a surprisingly wonderful email client. I still have a few minor usability issues I had questions about.

Posted by: ItemFinder

Does your firmware read 217 or 222?

Posted by: jacsha

I try using Mt-box and Phoenix to flash the 6300, i can confirm that you will not loose 850 band even if you flash it with RM-217 firmware. free feel to flash it.

Posted by: flipflash77

Quote:

It was RM-222, not it's RM-217. Signal strength is exactly the same everywhere I go, and in truth there shouldn't be any way you could lose a hardware band as several people have tried to prove.

I did NOT flash the firmware to be RM-217, just did a factory reset. So in my mind RM-222 is simply a different identifier to make identification for updates easier (RM-217 for Europe/Asia, RM-222 for NA), but the hardware is just fine. The email client is so totally worth it.

Posted by: Moderator HF 25

The approach is different, and I agree the hardware is capable of GSM850/1800/1900.

However the issues are: a) Signal strength based on what? RSSI on end-user UI or Net Monitor/FTD or telemetry gathered by industrial analyzers under controlled environment like simulate GSM850/1900 calls? b) The official mean to check the Band information may have toggled to GSM900/1800/1900 instead of GSM850/1800/1900 after such "reset".

Like what you've said, the product code and model have something to do to identify certain specification parameters. Band information's likely among those.

You have a normal Nokia 6300 (RM-217) which runs on 900/1800/1900 Mhz bands. Most of the confusion here stems from people with 6300b handsets (RM-222) which are on 850/1800/1900 Mhz and debranding them, which for whatever reason relabels the firmware to RM-217.

Posted by: bladearm

I wonder has anything debrand their nokia 6300 in vancouver, Canada? How is the reception? any major diffrerence?
and when you use NSS, can to revert back to fido's setting after you complete the factory reset? (as in revert back into 850 MHz instead of 900 MHz)

Posted by: eckndu

euh...
what is NSS ?? -_-#!!

can someone please explain a little what to get unbranded. mine is already unlocked but still full of fido stuff...

thanks!!!

Did this and it worked like a gem. Took less then 5 minutes. Now I justy have to figure out all the new toys.

Thanks!

I noticed something: unlocking the phone (via code unlock, not cable/box unlock) keeps it a RM-222.

I unbranded the phone using NSS. After the factory reset, the phone reverted itself back to a RM-217. The result is a unbranded RM-217 6300b, completely unlocked (tried Rogers, Cingular and Vodafone SIMs, all work).

As for coverage.... I've noticed absolutely no difference so far.

but the usb cable is sold seperately right, for the Fido versions?

Covered lots of places. Use ANY generic USB to mini-USB cable, and you quite likely already have one somewhere. This cable is extremely common and often comes bundled with digital cameras, MP3 players, compact USB hubs, etc... But yes, you don't get one in the box. If you shockingly don't have one, find the cheapest discount computer/electronics store near you.

Posted by: Beta-Man

Yep, I know that you can find them for $1 at Pacific Mall.

Not sure if we can post links or not, but Google is always your good friend.

Also, I advise against using Vista for this operation, as it managed to corrupt my drivers indefinately...

I'm buying a Nokia 6300b and I have a few questions with regards to Nokia's software update program. I come from the Sony Ericsson camp and am pretty technical so if anyone would like to get into detail for me, it would be great.

Main thing is that from Nokia Canada's website, which is my region, does not offer any kind of software update service. Even PC Suite is outdated at 6.83, instead of the 6.84 release that I found on the UK site.

So my question is, since 6300b runs on 850/1800/1900 instead of 6300 (900/1800/1900), if I update my 6300b with the latest software with Nokia's application on the UK site using 6300 as the model, would I retain 850 Mhz? What about AMR (full-rate, half-rate)?

Sony Ericsson has allowed debranding of their hardware with other regional firmwares by using 3rd party services, so I was able to run Singapore firmware on my W810, K790, K550, etc. And the frequencies were allocated by hardware so which ever regional firmware I used, all the phones retained 850. So I was wondering if that was the case with Nokia.

Posted by: reedacus25

i doubt that you will be able to retain 850 if you flash to another regions fw... many people are debranding their fido 6300b's to generic nokia and are losing 850...

Posted by: masterross

If you update your phone without changing Product Code all'll be fine.
NSU detects your phone by its prod code.

Posted by: strang

But isn't receptional frequencies something on the hardware side?

I debranded, you cannot lose 850, it is hardware. I used the NSS software and followed the directions from the other thread. It took 5 mins and it works perfect. No reception issues at all.

I also do have the crappy battery life that others talk about. I don't think that they are charging their batteries properly.

just follow {earlier posts of this thread}.

precision4,

However, one MUST verify the band information AFTER such flash (i.e. switch the product code to make it appears as a non-b version). There is a Band Information toggle under GSM tunning menu in Phoenix.

Here is my experience, but not sure it's related.

I bought the 6300b thru Fido 3 weeks ago and had it debranded, unlock, flash to 4.71 and changed the language to Trad-Chinese (thru product code). Last week, friend of mine came and visit me from asia. He has a SE 850i (900/1800/1900). When we went to Square One, in some area his phone signal is completely dead while my phone is still full signal. He ended up putting his sim to my phone (while I forwarded my phone # to my RIM)

And then? Did your phone work with his SIM? What a way to end a story.

Posted by: Moderator HF 25

Also, how about your SIM in his SE?

Anyway, we've got many discussion of 6300b debranding lately. It's time to merge this one w/ the earlier one.

Posted by: phillis_c

I can also confirm about 850Mhz exist even after debranding, firmware changed to APAC-Q localization (Hong Kong, that has simplified/traditional Chinese, Pinyin/Stroke input).

I tested with a 6280 that has 800/900/1900, and my 6300b has full reception where 6280 on 1900Mhz has only 1 bar. I re-confirmed the low reception with my trusty 3390 as well.

BTW.. RM-217 v5.00 firmware is out. I had it on mine. Now I can send Flash SMS!! The hissing from the music player is gone.

Is this available on NSU yet? If so, with what Product Code? Main reason is the hissing from the music player, as I use the phone as my main MP3 player.

Posted by: phillis_c

Unfortunately, it usually takes Nokia 3-4 months to put the firmware on NSU. I am flashing mine via Phoenix. I did found a few bug on v5.00 that I don't think Nokia will release it until it is tested completely.

One bug is the UI bug, where some of the elements on each theme will display as a "broken image" icon.

My phone is using product code 0537675: APAC-Q, Stroke, blksilver

Hi all,

I just got my unlocked 6300B (NA), I have no email application which was the main reason why I bought the phone. any idea as to how I can get it back? also, where can I find the RM217 firmware for download? I was told this will solve my problem... true?

Thanks!

Posted by: Beta-Man

Hit *#0000#, and check the first RM number. You probably have an RM-222, which is North American firmware.

Follow the tutorial using NSS software in this thread to perform a factory reset. That'll revert the firmware back to RM-217. The e-mail app will be in the messages option. We can't give you links, sorry.

Posted by: byoram02

Done, working! thank you so much! one more question though, in the email program, how do hit "enter" to start a new line?

Posted by: khizman

I have downloaded NSS, and installed it, from b freaks,
i have installed it and it asks me if i want to use f1 etc, i have tried it with a usb cable and cannot get it to communicate with the phone, any ideas?

Posted by: phillis_c

I never have such problem with NSS, in fact I didn't even touch the connection settings.

By the way, 6300 5.00 is out on NSU.

Posted by: strang

Does anyone have a list of product codes for the 6300?

Posted by: the dougler

is there anyway to flash it back to RM-222 from RM-217? I feel like my reception is much worse in rural areas and am not willing to give that up for ringtones.

If I have already debranded my phone can I still d/l the update with no problems? Has anyone d/l'd this yet? Anything new added? Do you have a direct link?

Posted by: phillis_c

dougler:
As we pointed out earlier, reception is not affected when using RM-217 firmware on RM-222. I tested it myself with a 6280 that has 900/1800/1900. The 6300 with RM-217 firmware has better reception when 1900Mhz is marginal. Please bear in mind that once you are using RM-217, I am not having any luck converting back to RM-222 because Phoenix just giving me the "variant error"

Since RM-222 is still at 4.71 and RM-217 is at 5.00, there is no way to downgrade without using a professional box.

As far as I know from 5.00, the fix the hissing noises in music player. It allows you to send Post Card and Flash SMS under New Messages. Other than this, I am not sure about the actual change log because Nokia does not really publish it.

For product codes for RM-217, I've attached the text files that lists all of them (not sure if this will be edited by mod):
http://www.zshare.net/download/2696280bee348b/

Posted by: Beta-Man

Thanks for the codes.

As for the 850 band, I tried the best test i could think of: using at&t (cingular)'s network in the states. I used 3 SIMs: Rogers, Fido, and at&t GoPhone, and 3 handsets: 6300 converted to RM-217, Samsung x497 and a quad-band SLVR L6. The reception on the 6300 was for the most part just as good as the others, though occasionnaly the SLVR had better reception than the other two phones.

But I'm pretty convinced now that the 850 band is still there.

Posted by: the dougler

what does changing the product code get me, that restoring factory defaults doesnt?

Posted by: Beta-Man

I've tried the 5.00 firmware for a bit. I've noted:

-Phone seems more responsive now (less lag)
-The "hissing" from the headset in both phone UI and Music Player is gone
-New languages, based on product code
-Voice recognition (holding down the - side button) causes the phone to cycle-boot (ie it crashes and restarts the phone).

As for the UI bugs, I haven't had any. The one thing I really dislike though is that the configuration settings are still all locked to Fido and are uneditable. This is quite annoying to me as my phone is unlocked, yet I can't use EDGE/GPRS/MMS on any other providers.

@the dougler: It lets you upgrade the 4.71 firmware to 5.00. Other than a few fixes, mainly the removal of the "hissing" from the MP3 player, there isn't nothing much to note. Factory reset simply removes most restrictions set by Fido (mainly, allowing any MP3 to be set as a ringtone).

Also, all the Fido crap is still present on the phone, and I've only removed a handful using MobiMB.

Posted by: phillis_c

I flashed mine via Phoenix, so I got rid of all Fido's customizations. Initially, my phone will reboot when I launch calculator. After re-flashing it for a few times for various problems such as freezes randomly. The phone does not reboot at all. Voice recognition works well.

Posted by: the dougler

Interesting, Do you need a box to flash via phoneix or can it be done with a USB cable?

Posted by: Beta-Man

Just tried reflashing with NSU twice. Everything is exactly the same, and voice recognition still restarts the phone. Well, not like it was useful at all... never got it to recognize a single command

No other problems, calculator works fine, and no random freezes other than voice recognition. Maybe it's due to the product code I chose?

Now just to get rid of those annoying permanent bookmarks... ><

Posted by: snake218

hi all, im new to flashing and to nokia, i need a little info:
i have a nokia 6300 b (850, 1850, 1900,... so its a rm-222 right?) unlocked and unbranded, i live in latin america, the weird part is that i have a v4.20 firmware, when i try to update with Nokia software update (btw it is importan to use a specifical region nokia update program? or any will do?) it says no updates available (btw my code is 0542154).
i want to know wich code can i use to have the posibility of updating to 4.71 or 5.00, without locking or branding my phone, and without losing my 850 band of course, can some one point me in the right way? thanks in advance

Posted by: Beta-Man

Which language(s) do want on your phone? That's the main reason for choosing a proper code.

I chose the 0537621 EURO-C UK, Latin, blksilver for British firmware, and as I've noted, everything works fine with firmware 5.00, including my 850 band, except for the voice recognition feature. Maybe it's just my phone for the voice thing though. Completely unbranded and unlocked.

The languages available on that code are English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Turkish and Portuguese.

Finally, I figured out how to set custom MMS/Internet/etc. settings, and that's all working fine. Now my only problem remaining is deleting the Fido-locked bookmarks.

Also, you can use any Nokia Softwaer Updater, though I would reccomend you update it to the latest version. To make it simpler to understand, let's use this notion: using NSU is like upgrading Windows (eg. upgrade from XP to Vista), maintaining most of your settings and such. If you perform a full flash, that's like a clean install of Windows. This is why some people will still find phones with branding to still be branded after using NSU, and usually a proper product code can't change or add branding to your phone.

Posted by: snake218

thanks a lot for the reply beta-man, the languages that i need are mostly english and spanish, sounds good to chose that firmware, and i see that even is a rm-217 you said the 850 band still works right? so i guess i will try that, i hope i dont kill my phone in the process :P. i dont use the voive dial feature , so i guess i wont miss it. thanks again for the info, btw, how much do it takes the firmware (or how much is in MB?) to download using NSU? im using a phone line to connect, i guess i can have problems installing it this way...

Posted by: Beta-Man

From my tests, the 850 band works fine. Also, I seem to have better reception since upgrading my firmware, actually.

If I remember well, it was about 24 MB for the update to download. Don't worry, as the phone's update will only start after the updater software has finished downloading it from the Internet. Also, your phone will switch to flash mode, and you might need to install the nokia drivers again, so have them handy as well.

Posted by: snake218

Thanks again for your reply. Btw can you tell me your original nokia 6300b code and your firmware?

Posted by: Beta-Man

My original code for Fido is 0548621, and it originally had firmware 4.71 RM-222. After debranding (factory reset through NSS), it became an RM-217.

i live in honduras, in central america. Like i said my phone came with a v4.20 software and i there isnt any update for it. So your reason to change your phone firmware/code was to unbrand it right? Mine is unbranded and unlocked, my reason to change it, is to be able to update the phone. so you think if i change my phone code to yours, and i do the update, will be branded and locked to your company, fido? If something go wrong will i be able to change my firmware back, or change it to another one?

Well, you can try using my code. I doubt you'd lock your phone or brand it by upgrading your frimware... I don't think NSU has branded upgrades, but that may be false. Best ask someone else.

If you do use my code, you would upgrade your phone to v. 4.71 RM-222

My reason to upgrade my phone's firmware was simply to upgrade to a higher version, and for the fixes. Unbranding and unlocking were done without any flashing, and before I upgraded.

Will you be able to change your firmware back? No, as you are only able to upgrade your firmware to a higher revision, not downgrade. You can also reinstall the same version of firmware.
Will you be able to change it to another one? Yes, if you switch your phone to a RM-217 and upgrade to v. 5.00, or when a version of firmware > v. 4.71 is released for RM-222.

Posted by: precision4

I have done a factory reset on my phone (now rm-217), if i do an update to version 5.0 from 4.71 are there any problems? Anything I should be aware of before I try this? Thanks

Beta-Man :

When I was doing the test of firmware re-flashing, I noticed if you don't do a "full factor" reset and just change your product code, after re-install or install your software by NSU, your voice recognization doesn't work and will reboot every time you use it. I don't know if that will help you.

try *#7370# (Soft format your cellphone)
or *#7780# (factory reset from cellphone)

I confirm that after doning a full factory reset with NSS AFTER changing product code to euro and passed to version 5.00 with NSU the voice activated function worked again. I dont'know if this messed other things but i don't think so but I need to set all the things again (menus etc).

Use this code :
0542153
It's for America, if you use Phoenix flash your phone, you'll get 6300B, by NSU you can upgrade to firmware 5.00 with English, Spanish and some other languages.

Thanks douyi,

Is it possible for me to use NSS and achieve the same result?

Assuming the code your recved is good. Here is the unlock procedure. I was warned by Nokia to do this only twice. So if it doesn't work for you your code is invalid.

I've used this process to unlock 3 Nokia 6300. So it correct. In fact instructions are from Nokia.

Step # INSTRUCTION PHONE DISPLAY
0 Turn on your phone
1 Press # key 1 time You will see “#” on your display
2 Press * key 3 times You will see “p” on your display
3 Press the * key 4 times You will see “w” on your display
4 Press * key 2 times You will see “+” on your display
5 Input 15 digit code Code “000000000000000”
6 Press * key 2 times You will see “+” on your display
7 Press the 7 key 1 time You will see “7” on your display

8 Double-check what’s on the display

It should read: #pw+000000000000000+7

9 Press # key 1 time You will see # on your display
10 Press OK button located on the left hand corner
The phone should be unlocked at this point

You may not even need step 10, all my phones simply reported they were unlocked. It doesn't actually report unlocked but released or something similar I can't remember exactly. Also not that you do not need to "" the number in step 5 just enter it in.

Cheers

FYI to all,

I just performed the factory reset with NSS on my unlocked Nokia 6300 from Fido. The Factory reset via NSS did blow away my contacts (they were backed up) and the saved radio stations.

It resets the phone from RM-222 to RM-217 it leaves the firmware at 4.71 and the product code at 0548621.
It does unlock the PTT, Email client, etc. as stated in the thread. it also doesn't create any problem with voice recognition.

After rebooting the phone, it selects the default FIDO theme. And config files. Which you can promptly change. The Factory reset doesn't attempt to blow away the entire system, but enables all the usual factory features.

The only thing I'm need to work on now is Internet access via my Rogers SIM. This was much easier on my E62.

PS: with regards to audio quality. I found the radio quality very good. The MP3 quality is also very good. No hissing etc.

The error code should provide some info. However, what I was told is the IMEI code is used to generate the 15 digit unlock code. You can't just stick in what ever code is posted on the web. The code posted in the previous msg was not 15 digits. I suspect it's invalid. I also noticed the code had text in it. The 3 codes I received had only digits.

Fido can provide the unlock code. If some sales rep tells you they never do that, your talking to the wrong person. If Fido gives you the unlock code they would most certainly provide the steps to unlock the phone too.

As I noted in my previous post I was told not to perform the process more than twice.

If it's an out of the Fido box phone you can't used any old mp3 as a ring tone. The simplest way to solve this problem is by using NSS and perform a factory reset. It's explained how to earlier in this thread. This will not totally de-brand the phone as I've found out. If you don't want to do that, save the file as a wav file and it will work.

What are the drawbacks to flashing to 5.0?

Took me a long time to figure that one out. To set custom settings for almost anything in the phone, hit Menu, Settings, Configuration, Personal config. sett., Add.

You should also create a custom access point in order to point the browser to Rogers' servers.

Benefits from upgrading to 5.0: You can choose custom languages, a few bugs are corrected in the phone, the hissing sound in some revisions of the MP3 player are gone, and a few others that are posted somewhere in this thread.

The drawbacks are that you're downgrading to RM-217 by doing a factory reset. Personally, I haven't had any problems with the 850 MHz band by doing this, and have tested it in the US using AT&T's 850 MHz network. However, if not done correctly, you might just end up losing your 850, or so they say.

Also, there is no way to really remove Fido's custom bookmarks using these methods. You'd need to reflash the phone completely using factory firmware, and not NSS.

Otherwise, in my experience, upgrading the firmware has provided only benefits.

Also, thanks douyi. I've got the Voice commands working again.... then again, it has never worked, but nonetheless, thanks!

does anyone know how to set up the email account on the fone after doing the factory reset? i keep getting error messages saying that the receipient does not exist. whats that mean?

Posted by: karlwr

Beta-Man,
Thanks for the info. I'll work on this tonight, today I'm draggin around that boat anchor Blackberry.

I'm kind of confused by the whole 850MHz band thing. My background in signals, leads me to believe that the phone bands are hardware based not software based. The posts appear to be generally anecdotal. I'll see if I can find some test software to conduct something which will provide some empirical data.

I agree with you in firmware upgrades then to be good. However, I flashed a E60 once ran out of phone memory and made myself I nice paperweight. Had to use a hardware flashing tool to downgrade.

Assuming you have configure everything correctly on the MUA (Mail User Agent - AKA email software on the phone). When you send a message to the MTA (Mail Transport Agent - AKA your mail server) it will check to see if the user you sent email to exists. If the person doesn't exist, the MTA will respond with the message you received.

There is a great deal more to email than the brief way I just explained. But the most common reason you get that error is because you have a typo in the email address.

Should I have a problem switching between RM-222 to RM-217? I have the restart bug when trying the voice dailing. And have this Msg in NSS (error):

What does it means?

I successfully de branded my nokia 6300 from fido as well as adding in the chinese language through product code changing (using NSS) followed by NSU update. However, i entered the 0537675 RM-217 APAC-Q BLKSILVER STROKE instead of 0515597 RM-217 CHINA-Q BLKSILVER STROKE CTV_HK, the hk version in changing the product code.

i would like to change it to the hk one 0515597 RM-217 CHINA-Q BLKSILVER STROKE CTV_HK but with NSU it says 5.0 is already the latest firmware, so i can't do an update.

Do i have to wait for the next firmware to change or there is an alternative right now to change the language? Perhaps phoenix can do it?

anyone suggestions guys?....

thanks in advance.

There is no difference between 0515597 and 0537675 if you upgrade your firmware through NSU. However, if you insist on using 0515597, you can change your product number, do a factory reset then use NSU to install firmware 5.0 again, it will re-install the firmware and the proper language pack according to your product number.

yeah, i've tried that douyi, it still says i already have the latest software, can't update. any other ideas?

Does anyone have any details on how actually to go about upgrading to v5.0 of the firmware? pros to doing so? cons to doing so?

Actually any information would be helpful, I managed to debrand the phone fairly easily thanks to information posted here by another poster. (Thanks for that.)

Posted by: VoyagerDude

Do you lose the # key quick switching between Silent and Normal profiles
when you do a full factory reset on Nokia 6300?
or if you upgrade to v5.00.

Also, what product code should I use to be able to go to v5.00

(this is for a Fido Nokia 6300b)

Many thanks!!!

Posted by: mark_dh

I did it using the USB cable and NSS. Haven't noticed anything weird about it yet. I also use Fido w/ a Nokia 6300b

Posted by: MasterSergeant

I had my phone (6300b) debranded and unlocked here in the philippines. One thing i noticed is that it has a weak signal or none at all on GLOBE (a local provider) but a good signal on SMART.
Any ideas on how to make it have a better signal on GLOBE? I brought it to a service center, they said that i need to have my phones hardware modified for the GLOBE frequency.
By the way, this phone came from Canada (Fido).

Posted by: VoyagerDude

According to

http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_ph.shtml

both SMART and GLOBE use the GSM 900/1800 frequencies,
and the Fido 6300b is a 850/1800/1900 phone (in Canada we use only 850/1900)
So I would have to guess that in your area GLOBE's network is on 900MHz frquency and SMART's is on 1800MHz.
I know this doesn't answer how to make your phone into a 900/1800 (63000 regular)

Thanks for the info.. Yeah, I kinda figured that out too..

And to answer the question regarding losing the "silent" feature when pressing the pound (#) button after upgrading to 5.0, yes I did lose it.. How do i get it back?

Posted by: MasterSergeant

By the way, someone told me that by changing the power amplifier (PA), my phone (6300b with gsm850/1800/1900 debranded to 6300 v5.0) would have a better signal here in the Philippines (gsm900/1800). Will this work?

Just to clarify:

can you tell that you lost the "silent" feature after "reset to full factory"
or only after upgrading to 5.00?

Im sorry but after upgrading to 5.00, I did a reset and was not able to check if the feature is still functioning.

Ohh and in addition, my voice command when pressing down the Names button display a VOICE SYSTEM ERROR. Hence I do not have voice command anymore. --- I DID another RESET to FACTORY.. Voice command is now working.. (edit)

after i did the factory reset with NSS, my # button no longer silences my phone... i did this to two 6300b's from fido, and both ended up doing the same thing... how do i get this back? thanks!

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who have this "problem" when I upgraded my RM-217 from 5.00 to 5.50 using NSU, it actually changed it back to RM-222, I can no longer use mp3 ringtones, but I got silent by pressing # back. Pretty much my phone got rebranded, but as long as I still have my chinese language pack, I'm happy.

Posted by: douyi

I failed on upgrading to 5.50, it looks like I have to bring it to Fido service.

Dont forget, you've also voided your warranty, so if anything goes wrong with your handset afterwards, you could possibly be sol.

I have reseted the factory default yesterday and I was able to use the email client then today I decided to flash to 5.50 to see if the firmware was adding anything (and found out about the email applet not working) and *poof* no more email, even after a few reset

However after placing the phone in local mode then back into the normal mode I found out the email is back.

Firmware is now 5.50 and show RM-217 on my Fido unbranded phone.

Surpringly when the firmware flash ended I had a RM-222 Phone with RM-217 language and Fido was still there, now fido is gone, email is back, and mp3 as well (mp3 as ringtone is working since my first reset)

Happy camper, thanks for the forum this is a great resource!

i lost all my contacts from mah sim card eventhough i had removed it...is there any way i can get them back??

Posted by: P00r

make sure you are not looking at the empty phone memory, if the card was removed then the contact should still be there, but phone memory is empty, switch to the sim view using the option in the contact screen

Posted by: AIRrunner

Props for this post. I'm using a MacBook Pro running Windows XP via Bootcamp and the walkthrough worked fine. I can now finally use any MP3 as a ringtone. I also got the PTT and IM icons. I did not insert any SIM card while doing this. All my contacts are still there. Thanks again.

Hey guys, I just got my Nokia 6300b from Fido a couple days ago. I'd like to say thanks to this site, I got my phone all fixed up nicely

Original:

Nokia 6300b
V 04.17
28-02-07
RM-222

Language:
V 04.17

RM-217

After I NSS-ed it (Full Factory Reset from RM-222 to RM-217 first, then changed the product code to a generic RM-217 product code. And upgraded firmware to v5.50 via NSU, and then another full factory reset)

Current:

Nokia 6300
V 05.50
14-08-07
RM-217

Language:
V 05.50
14-08-07
RM-217

At first I lost the two new IM and PTT icons in the menu after i upgraded firmware. But I followed P00r's instructions and set the phone to local mode via NSS, and then back to normal mode and viola! it appeared in the menu again Thanks P00r!

Now I have latest firmware with unlocked mp3s, a working silent # key, and the two new icons, the PTT and IM icons (well, the bottom right I M icon is a duplicate of the Instant Messaging icon Fido already has on the top right...) but anyways, you guys rock! (P.S, I didn't experience the phone having sucky connection..I get 3-4 bars everywhere I go..)

I heard that if something happens to my phone (dropped it in the toilet or something) and Fido finds out my product code changed, the warranty is voided? I'm not sure.. but i'm just wondering if you could write the original fido product code (0548621) back into the phone (so that if anything happens...warranty would not be voided?). Will it screw anything up? since it's for RM-222... and it's running a generic RM-217 now.

I received a 6300b phone which has a cracked LCD and is Fido locked. I would like to replace the LCD, but the problem is I am with Rogers. Do I have to unlock the phone or will I be able to use it with a rogers sim card? I assume unbranding it will have nothing to do with wanting to use a rogers sim card (I've looked everywhere on how to unlock this phone and have found nothing)

I changed my product code back to 0548621 without issue, in fact it seem to be only a field used by the nokia flasher to decide what firmware you need.

I went into a few lookup and the phone alway recovered, this seem like a fairly safe way to flash the phone.

Each time the phone end up back with the RM-222 until I reset it.

I am now experimenting with the Java applet hack to get the Java app like gmail to work, but so far Java is still not connecting, let me know if it work for you (if you have a need for this offcourse)

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...26&page=1&pp=15

It also look like the internal java mail client from nokia is using some kind of trick to connect thru a proxy, I suspect it use a hardcoded setting.

Hey DigitalMaxz, what generic product code did you use and what are the posibilities (list) that would replace a Fido product code ? By that I mean English/French like product code (no asian languages).

Thanks!

Hi,

I have the Nokia 6300 and want to debrand it.
I have the version V 05.52 RM-217
I have changed the product code to "0537620" but I allready have the newest verison.
So what can I do now?

Posted by: sersoft.corp

I've followed a guide to debrand my phone using NSS, then I changed the product code to 0537621, also using NSS.

I then tried to use NSU to install 5.50 and got this screen:

I've tried everything, another factory reset through NSS, changed my product code back to 0548621, changed to local mode and back, did another factory reset, reinstalled NSU, Tried it on another PC, nothing helps, it does detect my phone, the nokia software works fine, I think nokia finally noticed that people were cheating by changing the damn product code.

Can someone help me?

I'd really like to watch videos better on this phone, (The new firmware can play it at up to 25fps in mp4 format and I'm kinda tired of the 15fps 3gp files )

Thanks in advance

Posted by: ozadam

@serseft.corp:

don't worry, I think all Nokia 6300 owners are getting that error at the moment, it's been going on for several days now. Someone at the Nokia Discussion boards posted this:
"The 6300 is temporarily withdrawn from NSU whilst they resolve a technical issue according to Nokia Care here in Belgium.

This issue is currently also affecting 3109, 3110, 5200 and 5300 that I know of. "

Posted by: sersoft.corp

thanks, I knew it was a problem on NOKIA's side

This means there might be an even newer firmware than 5.50 ...

A small question, how will I know that the software updater has been updated? does the app check for updates automatically or I'll have to check out the version on the download page?

Anyway I'm sure someone will post an update on the forum link that you posted...

edit: the user title never lies, My mom really bought my phone

I think the old firmware can also play it well. My own tests proved that v5.50 does play 3GP better than 4.71, but I did not check MP4 playback before-and-after, so I can't really tell.

You will have to periodically check yourself . But you can track some of the update here : http://www.nokia.co.uk/EUROPE_NOKIA...oftwarenews.xml

However, it's not updated too often (last update Nov-28...).

hey all,
ok, so i've read up and down this forum, but can't find the answer to this question...

I'm with ROGERS, but I have a unlocked (by code --eg. #pw+code+7#) Fido Nokia 6300b phone.

If i use the NSS software to do a "full factory", does that relock my phone?

all i want is to use mp3's as ringtones, but i don't wanna be locked out

anyone have any ideas?

Posted by: eckndu

am i the only one who's getting line 2 switch when holding down the # key? the phone is already 5.50.
a factory reset via NSS will make the hash key unresponsive like in the 5.00 firmware, then a NSU reinstall will bring back the damn line 2 switch.

You have a different firmware than 6300B, if you have latest firmware then you need phoenix service software to re-flash your firmware.

No, a reset it will not relock your phone.

You can debrand it yourself if you'd like. There are instructions on this forum.

That quote is from another member (page #1) of this thread.

I can't find the exact procedures anywhere!
I've been looking on this site for 3 days now (in between taking care of my twin new 3 month olds).
Can anyone give me the step-by-step procedure for unbranding my 6300 please? I installed NSS (lastest on their site) and have tinkered a bit with it, however, I don't want to brick my phone.
Is there a STEP-BY-STEP procedure laid out somewhere?

PS: Do you think NSS can enable Wi-Fi on my 6300? That's a joke people..

Thanks in advance.

Posted by: N.Stewart

Nothing?!

Is this thing on?

Posted by: phzi

- Install NSS (freeware from http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/index.php?main_page=page_2)
- Click the Scan button in the top right corner.
- Go to Phone Info section.
- Click Read under Production Data Edit
- check Enable next to Product Code,
- change Product Code and click Write (look in this thread for appropriate product code),
- Run Nokia Software Updater,
- Update to latest firmware.
- Enjoy your debranded phone

Posted by: N.Stewart

Thanks phzi (hope i spelled that right).

Can't wait to try it out (9 hours from now when the twins fall asleep).
I'll let you know if the flash enables wi-fi to work (i still like that one).

Posted by: N.Stewart

Just taking a kwick look at these instructions now...
Don't I have to select factory reset, or anything like that?
My phone has product code: 0548621 already.
I'm not sure how just changing this will debrand the phone.

What's a good product code to debrand a Canadian FIDO Nokia 6300?

Sorry for all the questions.

Posted by: eckndu

change ur code, then nsu will read that code and download an appropriate unbranded phone software for ur phone. then u can factory reset if u want

Posted by: N.Stewart

Oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, now that makes more sense.
Thanks.

Here I go....

Posted by: N.Stewart

Finally got it!

Cheers to all you who helped me see through the mud!

Just a few more things though..
I verified BEFORE vs AFTER with *#0000#. I thought debranding meant that would be gone too?
I know it worked because I set one of my mp3's as the ringtone today...
Does anybody know what *000# does? I get back:

Service Reply
UNKNOWN
APPLICATION

Also, where can get a glossary of all these 'special' codes?
Who's on first? (Thought I'd throw that in to see who's paying attention)

Dear All,

Please can anyone help me debrand my Nokia 6300? I bought a Vodafone locked & branded handset some time ago. I have since unlocked it, but have so far been unable to debrand it. I installed NSS and used it to change the product code from 0551508. I then used NSU to update the software. Once I rebooted the phone, I discovered that it was still Vodafone branded but now the Vodafone screen that I had previously deleted (that appeared after the Nokia screen on booting up) had reappeared. I used NSS to change the product code again, this time to 0537620. I tried to use NSU to update the phone’s software but received a message that the phone already had the latest supported software and so no update was required. I’m on v 5.50. Can anyone help please? I have downloaded Phoenix but I don’t know how to use it and nor could I find a guide to using it.

Thanks,

S

If you don't have Nokia Phoenix installed, NSS will always say that. It doesn't mean anything, and isn't required to change the product code. The logs you guys posted are useless.

If changing the product code, or doing a factory reset fails, try:
- Making sure you don't have any nokia software running.
- Unplugging and replugging your phone.
- Restarting NSS
- Restarting your computer.

If you still can't get it to work, it's doubtable anyone here can help you.

BTW: my personal opinion is that if you can't figure out how to get NSS to work, or what that error means, you probably shouldn't be messing with the hidden settings on your phone.

NSS is incredibly random. I finally was able to get it to connect and 'upgrade' to the 6.01 firmware.

Two days later, I try NSS again, and same old error message appears.

@CH:

Try the following:

1) uninstall everything NSS and Nokia related
2) install NSS
3) plug in your 6300 and let Winblowz discover it and install all the appropriate drivers
4) disconnect the phone and reboot both the phone and the pc
5) when back in Windoze, plug in your phone, launch NSS and try to scan.

I hope this can help you.

Hey guys, I purchased an unlocked/unbranded 6300b (fido) and the signal reception makes the phone unusable indoors. 95% of the time there is no signal at all in my house standing next to a window, my old phone had no issues and always had plenty of bars available.

I checked the firmware and its 4.71 RM-217, is there anyway to fix this issue?

At the moment, this phone is useless.

Thanks
