Unlocked 6131 and New 3G SIM - Help!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So I temporarily upgraded to a 3g phone, and thus deactivated my old 64k sim and got a new 3g sim. well i returned the 3g phone and am stuck with the 3g sim. the problem is the internet no longer works, and att is saying that the new 3g sim does not work well with unlocked phones. so now i'm stuck with a half functioning phone. can anyone help? also, they cannot reactivate my old orange 64k sim.

thanks for any help.

Whether or not you can connect to the Internet has to do with the WAP settings in the phone. You can get Nokia to send the setting to your phone over the air. Use this link to get started: http://www.nokia-asia.com/A4417520

thanks i tried that already. didnt work. the thing is that no settings were changed in the phone, so the wap.cingular, etc settings were the same. the only thing different is the new blue 3g sim card. the rep claimed that unlocked phones do not work right with the new 3g sim.

EDIT: i should say that specifically the things that are not working are gmail app, google maps, opera mini, etc. it says to subscribe to packet data settings first or something similar. i can send and receive mms, and the default browser DOES work. just no 3rd party apps...

Are you running the latest FW?

Posted by: RogerPodacter

nope not the latest firmware. i was happy with the 3.72. perhaps the newest firmware makes the phone compatible with a att 3g blue sim. but i dont have the tools to do one myself. and since it was working fine before...

i think my only solution is to find a cingular store which still sells the orange 64k sims and reactivate one of those. do they still have those in stock? geez this stinks.

What data plan do you have?

unlimited medianet. the phone has been working perfectly for the last year, until i got this new 3g sim. weird.

Maybe its AT&T's way of saying. Good luck using our service if you dont buy a phone from us

Just to see, I put my 3G SIM in an unlocked KRZR and MEdia Net works. However anything else that needs to connect to the network says. "Please check GPRS settings."

The 2 SE unlocked phones I have had, W810i and K790a never had any problems with connecting to MediaNet, Opera Mini, Google Maps, etc.

thanks. here's an update. nokia configurator is refusing to send me settings updates, probably because i requested them too many times tonight. i lost them when i restored to factory settings. so, i was able to manually set up a wap access point, and google maps, opera mini, etc can connect. but it is intermittent. sometimes it works fine, the 30 sec later the edge symbol will not connect at all. reboot the phone kinda fixes it, if its even a phone problem and maybe not a coincidental network problem.

also i can receive text messages, but mms is not working. if i could only get nokia configurator. does anyone know how to manually set up mms settings on a 6131? thanks.

also, when i tether to my thinkpad, i get the "subscribe to packet data first" error message, which never happened before. cant figure out that one when other apps do connect.

The stores probably don't have them, but there are tons of old Cingular SIM cards on eBay that should work fine. You could also go into a Best Buy and find a cheap GoPhone that still has the old Cingular branding, and use the SIM card that comes with it. The Motorola C139s were $18 last I checked. Cheaper than buying just the SIM at a corporate store.

You can find all of that on your Online Account Manager on AT&T. You will see a picture of a phone thats on your account (probably the one you bought at contract). Click on Support and then Change Phone.. find the 6131.. then scroll down to MMS Settings.

Or.. go here:

go into the Nokia forums and do some searches about getting opera mini to work.... there are some extra settings that need to be done for those java apps. If my 6131 was working...I could give you the settings but you'll just have to search for them.
If you MMS and stock browser works then you all set. Just need those extra settings.
