Can I get just a phone without a contract?

We were with Cingular (now AT&T) for many years and have the analog phone which we cannot use before long. We have not been under a contract for several years and only pay about $37 a month. We would like to continue doing it that way as all we need is just a phone that we can call on without all the fancy stuff. What I need to know is can we buy an unlocked phone that will work on GSM network and switch our number to that phone or will we have to get a phone with a new plan? We have talked to AT&T and they just give us the run around about it. We do not want to be under a contract.

Nokia 6030 with pay as you go 25c a min plan 20 bucks shipped:

pick the pay as you go .25c plan, and order. Once you get the phone, activate the sim/account, take it out, then just get a SIM card from AT&T so you can put it in.

As far as SIM cards go, you are going to need one. Not sure if you can just have one with how your account is right now, but thats what I would try to get first.

As long as you don't have some tdma only plan you could buy a phone from a retail store at the no commitment price and get a sim card put on your account (all done at the store). Or any unlocked phone on ebay should work as long as its; GSM, 850/1900mhz, cingular branded (or new att) or unlocked.

OP: In order to do what you want to do you're going to have to contact 800 Customer Care because no store is going to give you anything besides a 2 year plan. First off I believe you should be able to move your number from TDMA/analog to GSM as I had a friend do it about a year ago. Secondly AT&T does offer no contract plans, even though they obviously don't advertise it. I'm proof of it as I've never had a contract with AT&T/Cingular, even though looking back I probably should have done it as I just reached 1 year. One point to note about no contract plans is supposedly you're suppose to lose M2M, but I still received it: maybe a mistake. And whatever happens insist on a no contract plan and make sure they did infact give you a no contract when you recieve your first bill, because they original had me signed up for a 2 year plan until I corrected it. Based on your post I'm guessing you want a cheap phone that makes calls, you can use dealking to purchase a refurbished Prepaid Nokia 6030 for $9.99 shipped or any Prepaid phone minus $20 shipped. Follow zephxiii info for choosing the plan. One point to note: you're going to need to have the/a phone before changing plans because AT&T requires a phone to be tied to the account. I'm not sure whether it's safer to attempt to setup the account first, pay for a phone outright temporary and send the temporary phone back at your expense or purchase the Prepaid phone first and find you have to send it back at your expense because you run into a problem. Good luck.
