PPC-6700 Tethering broke?!

Guys, I'm at wits end. This PPC-6700 has been nothing but problems.
Now I'm unable to use it as a modem.... one of the main reasons I bought a PDA.
My laptop just says "Could not get a dial tone." It used to do this only occasionally... now it's never able to dial.
I've tried USB, it also doesn't work for a different reason.

Put device in flight mode, Then take it off flight mode. That should help

How do I do that in the PPC-6700? AFAIK flight mode is just turning the "phone/voicecall" section of the PDA off.
