It is me or does AT&T always discontinue to best devices???

yesterday, i discovered the LG CU500, one of my best selling models are discontinued. i had a customer that wanted to return a defective model and we couldn't give her another one because we no longer carry them. she was pissed and i was pissed. instead, she had to settle for either a A727 or a V3xx.

i noticed that pattern at cingular/at&t. the s710a was a good phone discontinued. the w600, very popular to say the least, discontinued. the samsung d807 which wasn't available for very long, discontinued. but, it seems that the crapiest models ever, last longer. i can't even recall how long the original RAZRs were available before the v3xx.

i have a lot of customers walking out of the store because of the lack of selection that we have. not everyone wants or can afford an iphone.

Eye of the beholder...
Sometimes the best selling phone isn't the best phone.
Where I worked, the LG cu500 was the most returned phone.
Constantly dropped calls when switching between 3g and 2g.
None of the our area stores would recommend this phone to anyone.
Maybe in your area it worked fine.

LG's were bad when on fringe 3G areas because of the switching.

Just locked them to 2G and all it's problems went away.

I do the same with the CU400 as well, hopefully the CU575 will be able to be locked to 2G until we're converted in our market.

The V3 should've been put to pasture a LONG time ago... It's a perfect example of Form over Function.... which is probably why it still sells

I've noticed that the good phones don't seem to last long as well....

Anyone else think it's ODD that we only have 2 Nokia phones (if you're an agent... COR only has 1). I can remember times where we had 4-6 different Nokia models.

I just heard they discountinued the krazr.

Wouldn't surprise me... The W810 is EOL also.

I've heard that they were outing all 2G phones. Do know the timeframe, but it looks to be drawing near.

i guess because we are a 2G market, but i go to college in a 3G area and i've never had issues swtiching between the two. i have occasional drop calls but thats expected in my area.

Nokia still claims that the whole "retro" race was won long ago with their 3650. LG was unable to be reached for comment.

I had a HUGE issue with my lg cu500 when it would switch from 3G to 2G. I couldn't dial out or do anything. It sucked because a friend of mine's house was not in a 3G area. The cu500v is still around though, isn't it?

N75 and 6126 is all that's available in our market. They won't let us touch the 2610, although... I did get 20 by mistake

I wasn't thinking of the prepaid

I did like the s710s a whole lot. They should've came out with the white version. I was even thinking of getting this phone on ebay until the u600 caught my eye.

The samsung d807 has actually been returned and is back from EOL.

Posted by: jbzcar

I wouldn't call a V3xx instead of a CU500 "settling"...

Posted by: suthurnlatino

Any truth to the KRZR being discontinued? I just nabbed 2 activations because I had the dummy lying around and this couple really liked it.

Posted by: shorty28

the d807 is still one of the most popular phones around. also, customers are still looking for the w600i.

It's been gone from COR for around 2 months, but Best Buy still has it, because BB wasn't charging $200 after rebate for a $100 phone. Thus it sold.

Posted by: myk03

Yes, the d807 is very popular.

I used one last year around July 4th when no one else had one. Then I went back to one in March of this year, and now I'm getting one again since they brought them back.

5 of my friends use one to. Everyone loves them!

My store keeps getting krzrs in. Also, we have a new nokia that is selling pretty well the 6085. Perfect for the people wanting a simple flip phone.

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

Nokia 6085 is THE answer for people migrating from TDMA. Simple, cheap, and with a glossy finish, technophobics love it.

Posted by: myk03

I just got my white d807. I love it.

It is cingular branded, and they only have it on the internet. Does anyone know if they will carry these in stores or be able to to exchanges on them from XBM?

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

XBM will have them for a while, stores will not. People looking for slider phones in store will have a choice of a EDGE-enabled Sony-Ericsson and a 3G Nokia in less than a month, the Nokia being something particularly special. If you haven't seen it, just trust me.

Are 2G sim cards getting discontinued also? What happens to the people with phones that won't work with the 3G sim cards like the Nokia 6682?

I doubt that 2G SIMS are going to be discontinued but will only be available through customer service. I think that if a customer needs a 2G SIM (unless problem is result of CS mistake) there will be a charge to get a replacement.

Posted by: cingtd

I stand corrected from my previous post, after speaking with a member of the direct fulfillment group today I was advised that not even cust svc can order 2G SIM cards anymore.

My 6682 works fine with my 3G sim card. Yours does not?

Some older GSM handsets (Nokia 1100 for example) cannot utilize 3G SIM cards.

Where is your area?

Posted by: mobilopt

I was told that it has nothing to do with the popularity of the phones, but rather each model has a sales cycle as put out by the manufacturer. If and when , lets say they have a model that is a hit seller, they will produce more and again, make another assessment of term of life... but it has nothing to do with cutting phones, or discountinuing top phones..

just like every other product whether clothes or electronics, they all have a shelf life and must go, as new products will be launched..

I've not tried it yet since I'm currently using Verizon. I was using prepay on Cingular with a 2G sim along with my Verizon line a while after I canceled my contract with Cingular, but I just let it cancel since I was using my Verizon number a lot more.

I read in CSP under the Product Advisory Guide that some of the 6682 phones can't read a 3G sim card and gets an error. The only way to fix it is to use the 2G sim. Hopefully mine isn't like that My city doesn't even have 3G yet I'm in a relatively large city in Texas

Even if there is no 3G services in your area (assuming your phone is compatible) you can use a 3G SIM in a 2G environment.

Yeah, I knew that but apparently there's an issue with the 2G sim itself (or the phone), not the service that's provided through it. I don't wanna chance it by disabling my 2G sim for the 3G one only to find out it won't work I might be forced to one day though, who knows.... I think I'm gonna try to stock up on 2G sim cards, haha

Mine does too.... it actually does even better on reception than it did with my 2G card, not that I ever had reception problems on it....

I also use my 3G card in my 6230, which is older than the 6682..... no problems whatsoever....

i still have my s710a as a backup phone or when im playing paintball , the w600 was a nice phone but from what i was told was discontinued due to the fact that when you swivel the phone the screws would come loose from the housing and well dead phone , i dont know why they didnt keep the s710 over the w600 i prefer having a memory card in my phone then not.

Granted I am not in your position but I have been catching... hll trying to get just ONE 2g sim. I bought a sweet asian quad-band which needs 2g and Ive searched everywhere including calling the 866 cing.. One rep thought they were sending me a 2g but instead sent me a 3g... Ive tried 4 stores here in HOU... :nothin

throw me a bone here...

thanks in advance

Posted by: chrischoi

maybe it's just getting outdated. ever think of it that way?

Posted by: Sethm

My new phone is from the Asian markets, its not outdated really... just compatible with only 2g sim. I'm thinking its a voltage thing as to why it requires a particular sim. That said... where did all the 2gs in the US go? lol

hopefully not the trash

Unfortunately you can't get them from At&t anymore, try ebay instead.

An e B ay search yields nothing with 2g as search term.. Is 32k sim a 2g sim? I am really lost at this point.

links welcome My.yahpoo is on too

Id really appreciate any help or direction

Yeah the CU500s are a nice feature set on a poor build. I actually prefered the CU-320s except that they could not run HSDPA. Upgraded to the CU500 and have already had two brick on me -- replaced by LG, and the latest one drops calls a lot in 3g mode. (it stays firmly locked in 2g when I have my COU sim in it -- unless I am testing combination calls tethered)

I managed to get a data card with a second sim and finally replaced the #%$ CU500 with an 8525. I would probably have gone with a N75 if anyone had been able to confirm whether it had a test mode. (sighs)

I am a contractor, so I have to provide my own equipment (though I get an Employee discount) to use my COU Engineering sims. I do 3g data/voice testing on occasion so I cussed (a lot!) at CU500s over the last year...

Posted by: redwolfexr

I think the SIM issues is that the phone can't address a 64K memory card -- the older ones are 32K.

There is also a 3g "flag" enabled as well, but doubt thats causing a problem. I can use (very) old 2g sims in my A845 Motorola handset just fine. I have also used 3g sims in a 2g MDA (8125/Wizard) with no issues. When we launched the Dallas market we were using 2g sims because thats all we had. My current ones are "white" so couldn't tell you which they are -- but most likely 64Ks.

If you can find a 32K sim with your network code it might work for you.

my paticular phone allows me to manually enter network codes and rank them if you will... i have 310410 at the top and 310180 next... (houston) im still waiting for my ebay purchases anyway, i'll post back with results..

thanks for the input
