I have just brought a HP6515 in order to use as a GPS navigator (Tom Tom 6 Western Europe). After loading the software I drove around for several hours without picking up any signal from the Sats. I have tried all sorts of settings and downloading the TT update (Jan 07). I have of course done the quick GPS thing. I'm now at the stage that I fear the internal GPS is not working right however I hear from others that the HP internal GPS is pretty rubbish anyway. Looks like I will have to invest in a Bluetooth GPS reciever. My main question is, can I run a simple test to see if its functioning OK ?

look for a free program called visualGPSce. Set it to COM7 and the baud to 56000 or 57600 and see if it picks up any sats. Also, I wouldn't call the internal GPS rubbish, it worked well for me in my 6515 and now in my 6945.

Many Thanks for that. I think my problem lies with a Software error within TT6 as I do not have a option to select Comm 7 or maybe even a hardware fault within the HP6515.
The device at this moment has gone back to the Company where I purchased it for checking. But I will try it on its return.
If only I knew this before!. HP Service and Support are has good and man short. Tom Tom after sales technical team are not much better.

There's lots of quirks w/the 6515 ... got mine off eBay 3 months ago, and am only now getting around to trying the phone part, and she ain't working. Re TT6, there are updated files for a 6515, but visual GPS should work for you. I found the OS or rather how things interface from WM2003 out to the 6515 to be very strange ... lots of ways to get to similar settings, yet, only one path for that one ever important setting. Google TT6 and 6515 or try checking http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13658

Just got my device back from Amazon after I reported the GPS did not work. It came back fixed. I asked what they have done to get it going but no reply. Still a mystery??.
About the phone. I had a Virgin Mobile sim card to start but was told by numerous people that it was not compatible. Now I have a new Vodaphone sim and it works OK. Shame about losing my number !

I've owned several 6515's and can tell you from personal ownership and daily usage that the GPS on those devices are NOT rubbish. You clearly got a bad unit which you returned and was obviously sent back fixed or they issues you a new device entirely.
BTW, TomTom has well documented problems with the iPaq. So TomTom isn't exactly the best choice for someone with a 6500 (or even a 6900) unless you are willing to deal with the quirks or do some registry hacking (like I had to do).
Instead of TomTom, I would highly suggest iGuidance or iGo-- both of which work flawlessly with the 6500 series (and the 6900 series). Good luck.

Appreciate that and will take note. I guess somebody must of changed the registry settings as the GPS works absolutely perfect now. But to the novice I would have no clue how to do this. Surely Tom Tom must know these problems ?.
My latest problem is now with the phone. I'm currently using a Vodafone SIM (UK) that works well but I cannot use any other network. For example using a Virgin Mobile SIM when dialling out I get three beeps and hangs up. I have been told that it may be due to HP 6515 compatible with other networks or even worse... the phone has been blacklisted!, bearing in mind it was a ex-Cingular phone. (this phone must be jinxed). When I take it to local mobile phone shops claiming they can "unlock any type of phone or network" they run a mile. The world of PDA/Smartphones appear to be a very niche market. I have found HP support about as good as a man short. (Tom Tom were not much better). It seems that to own a PDA you must have Nuclear Science degree able to crack the enigma code. Sure must be the most frustrating piece of kit I have ever dealt with.

The 6515 NEEDS to download the sat positions before you can get going so if it isn't getting edge or gprs it will not work. I still have my 6515 here and now use a dash and the 6515 only when i need gps.

If you are talking about the quick GPS download, I never bother. I seem to get a fix within 5 mins. I think the problem I had was with the registry settings and the software could not communicate with the the internal GPS. For some unknown reason Tom Tom setup did not have the option of Comm port 7.
Anyhow all OK now.

Since TomTom is tricky to set up on the 6515 - esp. given the delay in getting a fix with the 6515 internal GPS - the best thing to use is visualGPS, as previously recommended. Set it (COM 7), and wait a few minutes, you should start getting a fix on satellites very soon; the "light" will be red for over 10min the first time, even though you should be getting 8 or more satellite signals. It will at some point give a "green" light, and your TomTom should then be able to pick it up too. Note that just suspending the unit seems to be enough (for me), such that when you turn it back on, I get a 'green' and satellite fix almost immediately that way, when I turn it on in a day or two.
