Phone rental services in Japan

I remember awhile back there was a thread about the Vodafone/Softbank rental service including the SIM card only option, which I thought was great. I guess being the ignorant person I was at the time I thought that was the only rental option until I started doing some research and found that there are several options. I came across some info on the following thread that lists several alternatives: http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/qu...ay.html?0+26820 I know there are more. Atleast on paper it would seem these other alternatives such as PuPuRu are a better option in terms of money and features, especially the 105/min rate for phone calls. But I'm curious if any of you have had any experiences with any of the non Vodafone/Softbank rental options? I'm kind of thinking that I probably don't need to keep a handset for roaming in Japan?!?!?
