Official guide to reinstating/applying employee discount with an iPhone

Here is what to do:

Call AT&T and tell them that although you love the iPhone, you just miss your corporate discount oh so very much and that you regret to inform them that you are going to return the iPhone. Tell them you'd like to go back to your old phone (assuming you have one, if not, just tell them you have an unlocked GSM phone you want to use) and to please remove iPhone data + texting. In its place, tell them you would like MediaMax 200,1500,unlimited, whatever you want. The pricing/features are exactly the same, but now you don't have an iPhone plan. They will do this. YOU WILL LOSE VISUAL VOICEMAIL AND NOTHING ELSE, as visual voicemail is the only thing unique to the iPhone data/texting plans.

After you've done this, AT&T doesn't think that you have the iPhone any longer, and therefore you get your employee discount back. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. And yes, I am currently doing this and it works perfectly (at least at this point).

Cheers.

p.s.- be sure not to act like a dumb *** on the phone call. Be very kind and gentle and let them feel your smile through the phone, even though that smile is a "I just screwed you so badly" type of smile.

Actually I know someone who has an iPhone without a DATA plan. No edge and no visual voice mail but if you are around wifi hotspots all day you really don't need edge.

So... How do we get visual voicemail then--that is, what other ways can we get a good visual voicemail implementation? Callwave... GrandCentral... SimulScribe?

I don't know what's funnier, that you think you've found some amazing loophole in AT&Ts system or that you actually think that they haven't thought of people doing this already?!?!??!

Go ahead and enjoy using your iPhone with MediaMax...just don't ***** and complain when your next bill comes and you get charged for data at a pay-per-use rate.

P.S. To elaborate, it doesn't matter what SIM card you use or whatever, they will always know what device is connecting to their network and accessing their data using the IMEI/SN of the device. Many people tried to use their PDAs with Smartphone plans and although it worked, they got $1000+ bills in the end because the plans weren't valid.

ya the problem is that the weather app automatically updates and some other stuff uses data...but i guess if you could screw up the edge settings than it'd be all good haha

Would you please post a link to one of these threads? I have never seen a single instance of overcharging on correctly setup PDA data plans for anything but unauthorized tethering. It is well known that the smartphone/media max/PDA data plans are essentially interchangable without extra charges.

Please back up your statement.

I'm sure if you search HoFo you can find the threads. You can choose not to believe me, it doesn't effect me in anyway. I'm telling you from personal experience that I had a Cingular 8125 with a MediaMax/Smartphone plan for $20/mo and although I was using the wap.cingular APN at the end of every month for 3 consecutive months I was billed for all data usage. To test my theory, I stuck the SIM into a Cingular 3125 and the usage on that didn't get billed.

You can all do whatever you want, it makes no difference to me but if in fact AT&T notices you are using an iPhone without an iPhone data account and decides to charge you, you have absolutely no ground to stand on since it clearly states everywhere that an iPhone requires an iPhone data plan.

Good luck.
