Really confused about the process.

I'm looking into buying an iPhone but I'm confused about the process. I saw the requirement for the 2 year activation and I was just reading in this very forum about the preinstalled sim card. I have a Treo 680 atm and DO NOT want to lose my phone number. When I switched over from ATT a while ago to cingular (i pulled my number off my parents account), im not sure if they put me on a contract or not, they said they didn't but someone else said they did so I haven't taken the time to figure it out. Is there anyway for me to just purchase an iphone straight up and get it activated and ready with my current sim card?

Whats required as far as data plans? I have a media works package atm and it works just fine on my Treo.

You can bring your existing plan(are you on ATT now?) and phone number, and you will pay $20 per mointh for Data-likely less than with the Treo. Iy is my understanding you have to use the Sim Card in the iPhone--then you can put it in your Treo after you have activated your iPhone. It is 200 Text messages and the rest of the Data is unlimited. There might be some problems if you do lots of Data with your Treo--but why not just use the iPhone?

I came from verizon, so no sim card there. But, there is no advantage to using a sim card you already had. The iphone doesn't get any info off of it, nor does it put anything onto it.

I suppose if you dropped it onto a "spare" phone, you'd have some contacts.

You have to activate it through iTunes.
