Mail problems: secure IMAP with a non-standard port

Hello all,
I'm trying to use the Mail application on my iPhone with a secure IMAP server with a non-standard port. I use the syntax:
mail.xxx.com:nnnnn
Where nnnnn is the high port number for the secure IMAP server.
It errors out almost immediately, apparently not actually connecting to the server but instead saying that the connection failed.
IMAP on normal ports works as well as POP and SMTP.
Anyone else have this problem?
